Which of the orientation activities would you guys recommend - the zoo or the art museum? also if your cpr time allows you to attend both (1 each day) would you recommend going to both or just choosing one? Thanks!

Can't I just skip out on those activities and go to the Miller Brewery instead of the zoo?
Sure you can! The Art museum is a beautiful building with a mediocre collection inside it. The zoo is a zoo. I did do the zoo thing, but just to bond with people.
The people I bonded with did not turn out to be my good friends. Funny thing.
What the heck?
Why does it say that the insurance rates are all around 200$ a month for health insurance? Why would I sign up for the schools health insurance rather than keeping my insurance which isn't that bad for 45$ a month?
I thought the student health insurance would be 470$ for the whole years coverage as they quoted on the budget for fin aid.

the first link that said stop and read first rates etc.., on the second page they quote ~$200 month for coverage. 😕
Wow, they make it seem that you have to be covered by either your parents or spouses insurance or you need to sign up with the schools plan. I can't be covered by my parents and I don't have a spouse. So there is no way around it? I have to sign up for the Humana? Or can I just continue my own personal insurance plan that I have right now.
pretty much have to go with the school.
Damn. That is like $2,400 for a whole year of health insurance coverage. How can they not put that into the budget? Am I missing something here or does that sound right to you all? I guess I'm just a little shocked since I've only been paying about 50$ a month for health insurance rather than $200 a month that I will be paying.
Nope insurance is not included in the budget. I forgot about it this year and had to recalculate what I was taking out. I have the PPO and it's $3100 for the year.
Thank you for the replies. What would you guys suggest for someone like me who plans on visiting family in California during holidays and being back in Cali for summer between M1 and M2 years? I didn't think about the whole issue of being out of the Milwaukee area at certain points of the year. Seems like this would rule out the HMO, since I wouldn't be covered when I'm back in Cali, but the PPO is super expensive. I think I'd like to go with the relatively least expensive plan, the Coverage First PPO.
How accident prone/sick are you? If you plan on visiting the doctor while you're in CA get the PPO. If you're not, get the HMO. I've kept the HMO while traveling to and from HI (and other states for snowboarding), and I'm accident prone. I haven't had to use my insurance in any other state. If you want extra coverage or plan on getting hurt, invest in travelers' insurance. My Amex card offers it for $10/month, and I can cancel it whenever.
I have no chronic illnesses (knock on wood that it stays that way). Pretty healthy person overall and I don't plan on seeing a doctor while I'm in Cali, only if it was an emergency situation. I think the Coverage First PPO seems like the fit for me.
I have a BLS CPR certification that won't expire till Nov '09. Does this mean that I get to completely skip the CPR sessions? 🙂

Maybe if it's your wedding, but otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't willing to budge.is MIM Testing missable...I have a wedding to go to on a day we have MIM testing. also there is a pbl session that day...can i miss this day?

Yeah, the admin gave me a hard time about missing the White Coat Ceremony before M1 year for my own wedding's rehearsal the day before I got married. I doubt they're going to be that lenient about someone else's wedding on an exam/PBL day.
Have I mentioned that this school will get no alum money from a certain DrFunk?
is there someone i can call and ask because i need to book a plane ticket very soon. its a very important wedding...
i dont know if someone has asked this before, but is it wise/possible to purchase our text books early? or when we recieve our syllabi is there is a mad dash for the book store to get the lastest editions?
thanks.

Med schools aren't hurting for cash. However, I would like to fund a scholarship for college students at my undergrad some day. I'll make it for male students whose parents could pay their tuition but refuse to.Don't you just love the school and all its policies?
No money from Ashers either.

I had the same idea for funding a scholarship for pre-meds. It was going to be based on the applicant's refusal to do all of the BS extracurriculars and leadership roles that people think they need to get into med school.

it's probably a little late but here is my situation:
I will be coming to Milwaukee from California to start the med school.
I was looking around and found some great 2 bedroom units in the complexes around the school (heat included, covered parking, etc).
I was wondering if there is anyone else (preferabley male) who is still looking for a place or a roommate.
Please email me at
By the way, thank you guys for all of your advice in here. You are awesome.
Does anyone know when registration begins? Is it during orientation?
Thanks!
any info on having to buy otolaryngoscopes or stethoscopes?
I wouldn't necessarily buy an otoscope or opthalmoscope. You can get by without one M1 year.
M2, M3, and M4 year as well.
