MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone remember when we have to turn our credit reports in? I think its before we matriculate, but I am not sure. Thanks

I talked to Mike Istwan about this a few months ago when I was accepted. Report submission is "within 6 month [sic] of matriculation." I think he meant specifically within 6 months BEFORE. So it may be that time, but you've still got time.

hey are there any apts walking distance from mcw? if so, what are their names(.if u guys know em)?

most are privately owned and don't have names, but are easy to find on Watertown Plank Rd. with "For Rent" signs out front. There are two that are reasonable walking distance that are larger and have names, but I can't remember the names offhand. Plus there's a big old-folks' home nearby but that's probably harder to get into.

apts near the school are crappy except for the expensive ones on glenview and Watertown. Live downtown and by yourself or you will never get laid

do a lot of students live in any specific apartment? A friend of mine who graduated years ago said there was a large apartment complex where a lot of the younger med students lived. He wasn't sure if this was still true, but said that it was nice to have classmates around. Thoughts on living with other students vs. other friends? I don't want to pay for a one bedroom, but I'm kinda worried that my friends from college might be a little too much fun... 🙂

A lot of people live in privately owned places that just put up for rent signs in the front yard. Otherwise check out jsonline.com. I found my current place on craigslist. Apartment complexes include Wilshire manor, Harwood apts, Overlook, the Reserve, Underwood station (? or something like that) and Normandy Village. There's another complex on 95th that I can't remember the name of. No complex is overwhelmingly consisted of med students though.

there is a big building on something parkway across from a soccer field and up the street from a gradeschool on Portland. There is a sign out front about a one bedroom for rent but the building looks like an asylum or something. What is that place?

hey current MCWers,

i love the idea of living downtown, but do a lot of students do this?...or is it more feasible to live in the Wawatosa area around campus?

thanks!

The big building with the bell-tower? Hawthorne something I think? I'm pretty sure it is a retirement community, renovated previously from a junior high school.

I personally have been glad not to have to drive in from downtown. There are plenty of decent places right around in Tosa and western Milwaukee from duplexes to one of the little independent quad buildings to a more formal apartment complex. I live in a nice but affordable quad place about a mile from campus with no regrets. But then downtown is still only 10 min away so I can go do stuff there whenever I feel like it. The way I see it, would you rather drive in to school and back every day of the week or drive downtown for entertainment once or twice a week, not to mention potentially paying more (I admit I haven't priced it out) depending on where you live?

To answer your question, most of the crowd I hang out with at least live out in the suburbs reasonably close to the school, or up north a few minutes in the Burleigh/Center/North Ave. neighborhoods where it is even cheaper.

Not a lot of students do it, but it is certainly a reasonable option. I know one guy who lives in Johnson Creek (halfway to Madison) because his fiancee works in Madison, and they live together. He still comes to class every day. I live fairly close to school, because my wife and I share a car, but once our lease is up, we'll start looking a little farther away because we're getting a second one. I don't think a 10 minute drive is a big deal, but downtown is more like 15-20, once you figure in the time it takes to get to your car, park, etc.

I live in Kenosha, about a 45 min drive in, and it worked out ok. Living downtown would have been easy by comparison.

I know a few people who did it, but most of my friends lived in 'tosa.

Downtown is probably nice if you're single, though.

Wait...you live where there's a White Castle????

Wait...you live where there's a White Castle????

What's so special about that? I live where there's spam musubi sold in gas station marts. 😀

I really don't want to go back to WI on the 31st. =( But I did acquire an awesome new hat for Christmas. Splat, I think you'll like it. I'll bring it to the full day waste-o-time sessions.

Mmmmm... Musubi!

I wanted to live downtown, but since I live by myself, I couldn't afford it. Plus, remember that often parking in downtown/eastside is extra and limited.

But of all the people I know that live downtown, not a one has wished they lived in Tosa.

living downtown is good given that you dont go to class.

MUSUBI HAT! MUSUBI HAT! MUSUBI HAT!

Not so much a musubi hat. That'd be interesting though. Maybe if I have time before the stupid meeting, I'll make some.

I can't find the amazing spam cans they usually sell. I'm quite disappointed.

If you're into Spam memorabilia, you need to go to the Spam museum, a mere 4 1/2 hours away in Austin, MN. They have all the unique Spam cans you could ever want. I went to the annual Spam Jam a couple years ago and was impressed by the scale of the event as well as the excellent cuisine offered (I highly recommend the Spam fajitas). And Bill Nye was there.

Bill Nye the Science Guy did a program on Maui when I was in 8th grade. And, one of my best friends in college is named Bill Nye.

The Spam cans I wanted are limited edition Hawaii cans. They've had them every time I go to any store. I went to 5 stores today, and none had them. =(

Spam is part of the reason our elders won the great wars. Have a little respect.

Yay~! I got the big envelop on the 20th! (the best x'mas gift ever!)

BTW, sorry to ask another housing question. I tried to read all the previous posts, but I'm just too lazy to go on craiglist/etc. I'm planning to live by myself but would prefer to live in an apartment complex w/ other med students. Are 1-bedroom apartments easy to find and about how much would the rent cost??? 😕

Another thing. I definitely want to go back to WI and look for housing, but when is a good time to start looking??? I mean, I don't want to go too early when there is a lack of availability, you know.

Rents in 1-bedrooms can run as low as $550, but I don't know about the complexes specifically. Be sure to call Wisconsin Energies about any specific apartment if utilities are not included and they'll tell you the average bill over the last year.

Congratulations!

May is a pretty good time to look. A lot of landlords don't bother to advertise and just put a sign up.

The Wilshire Manor has 1 BR apartments for around 500, I think.

I wish Wilshire Manor was $500 or I'd live there. One BR loft is 845.00 and the ranch is 775.00 . I had called there in November this year. If anyone wants to come to Milwaukee early in the summer time I'm trying to sublet my bedroom out in our three bedroom. It's really hard to find one bedrooms that will fit the financial aid bedroom. I know that the two bedrooms are more affordable in the budget at Wilshire Manor.

Wow, my bad. Prices must have gone up quite a bit in the past few years. I could swear I had a buddy living there for less than 600/month our first year.

sometimes people do "special odd jobs" to get lower rates.

Wow, somehow financial aid budget became financial aid bedroom. Well you all know what I mean! $600 is not very much for a one bedroom. Definitely doable for a two bedroom though.

My first apartment was a 1 bedroom for $655 with heat included. If you look around you should be able to find something reasonable.

My apt is a 2 bedroom for $635 (I pay $650 because of my kitties). Hardwood floors or carpet. Dishwasher. Washer/dryer in basement (1.25 per cycle, 2.50 per load). Decent size. Staff.. well... fine, but they get real problems taken care of rapidly.
Mayfair Manor. Lots of med students. 2.5 miles from school/Froedtert/Children's, further to the other hospitals, but that's a consideration for 3rd and 4th year.

I can write proper sentences if I have to, just didn't feel like it above. Oh well.

Where Xandie lives is definitely gonna be the cheapest if you want a large apartment complex. Normandy, Underwood Station, and Reserve run in the $700-$800ish range for one bedroom apartments. Cheaper apartments will generally be the privately owned ones.

And definitely try to get a place that includes heat. Not too hard to find.

Oh, and I think the apartment complex on 95th with the indoor pool might be cheaper, though not quite as nice.

I recently was accepted to MCW and I wanted to ask current MCW med students if you guys remember whether or not you received a confirmation when your $100 acceptance deposit was received by the admissions office? Thanks!

I believe so, but it is ALWAYS OKAY to call them and ask. I called and asked about all sorts of things, and actually it was a good thing because when they got my transcripts they filed them under my former married name and there was much drama and sending of second copies before I thought to ask them to look under that name and it all got straightened out.

Just call. You'll feel better.

Some people here might be thinking along the lines of moving snow or mowing the lawn but Kingpin is all I can think of.

I received a letter saying they got my deposit and are holding my seat a couple of days after I sent my deposit in.

I, too, received a confirmation letter. Yay~.

Now would it be too early to turn in my transcript or might as well do it know before it gets too busy later in the year?

BTW, does anyone know anything about these apartment complexes? Any rumors, both good and bad? (I just randomly found them online)

- Himount Gardens Apartments
- Garden Pool Apartments
- Parkview Apartments

Thanks! 🙂

I have a friend who I'm thinking about living with who wants to live in Brewer's Hill. I'd like to be close enough that getting there isn't a huge pain, and I'd like to be someplace that's relatively safe. Thoughts?
