MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay for fellow Georgians!!! 😀 pratik, I "might" have heard about you when I went up for my interview. Yeah, if you could give me any tips re: moving from GA to WI, lemme know~! This is my first OOS experience.

Yeah, I must admit, me of us down in GA are big-time rednecks. I am hoping I'm one of those that can't be spotted out within a crowd....unless I happen to order "sweet tea." 👍

uhh ohh..how "might" you know me and dont believe anything they told you Where did you go to undergrad? As for advice, you will not find real sweet tea here...i looked everywhere for the first few weeks and kept getting the same response "we have unsweet tea but you can add your own sugar". The weather is a bit of a change but the snow is fun....we sled every now and then. I really like it up here. Moving is a pain...but i just brought whatever i could fit in my car and my parents brought me a suitcase of stuff when they came for the white coat ceremony. There are a some cheap furniture places around town and they will deliver and set stuff up. People will make fun of you for saying yall or being from georgia and not sounding like a southern hick...you just cant win. Rent here is pretty cheap, safe and low key around school and a decent downtown. Thats all i can think of ...let me know if you have specific questions.

Uber bad. I only went outside because I had to go to a funeral. Otherwise I would have been inside in my sweats on sweats layers with hot tea ALL DAY LONG.

Im sorry about the funeral, and for that matter, the fact that you are in my group

Congrats to everyone!

I'm a nurse--used to work at one of your rotating hospitals but not anymore. I live on the East Side in the Brady St. area and I highly recommend it. Craigslist is a great way to find places. One warning: stay well away from anything owned by Katz properties. They're overpriced, keep jacking their prices, and their upkeep is horrid. Shoreline properties has a pretty good reputation. Like has been said before, look for off-street parking (especially when working and coming home late) and heat included in rent.

For anyone moving into the area I'd be happy to answer any questions--just pm me. 🙂

ETA: Here's a link to an efficiency building on the East Side. Click on "Arlington Studios." I live in a house/flat owned by the same landlord, and he's very responsive. Last weekend our neighbor's (same house) heating system broke and the landlord was here within hours. When he couldn't fix it right away he brought them space heaters so they wouldn't get cold. http://selectapartments.us/

The funeral was actually a memorial, so at least we didn't actually have to STAY outside. Just go outside to get there, and to the bar after, and home. But it was quite sad.

Pratik, don't be sorry. I'll be nice in group! Really! I'll be good! I'll go do the reading RIGHT NOW.

Dont do it...i opened the book to the devo section...cried ...and quickly closed the book

Example of Local News for Out of State Applicants

"A terrorist bombing in Balakalor killed 293 people including the president of Australia. Brett Favre was not available for comment on how this would affect the upcoming NFC championship game tonight between the Packers and the Giants.

In other news, extremely frigid temperatures will make for a hard night for many of the people in the community of Shakesberg, which has been without power for 3 days. This includes a yet-to-be evacuated senior living facility and orphanage, which was coincidentally visited by former Green Bay Packer Mark Chmura, who participated in the Packers last Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots. He was not available for comment on how he feels about the recent success and hopeful Super Bowl trip for the Packers this year."

I can't believe how all the patients in the hospital have their families over to their rooms to watch the Packers. The Dert is a Sea of Green today.

My intern was like, "Wait, aren't you from Wisconsin?" When I commented on how strange it was.

Conversation overheard in the elevator on Friday:
Guy in green shirt: Hey, why aren't you wearing green?
Guy in red shirt: Oh, yeah, I'm not.
Green: Are you a commie?
Red: Ha, no.
Green: Or worse, a Viking's fan?

Tonight we mourn the loss of the NFC championship game, and nervously await Favre's decision on retirment 🙁 It's a crappy night here in Packerland.

It wasn't a sea of Blaze Orange, like Lambeau?

I knew I should have worn my cheesehead, even though I was watching the game at home by myself. Drats.

you can get sweet tea at McDonalds now. I saw it on a sign.

Sweet! 👍 Now, the next question is "is it GOOD sweet tea?" If not, I may have to resort to brewing & preparing my own. 😉

Sidenote: It was cold today. Boo hiss. Negative 18 wind chill and I went outside in my workout clothes and a sweatshirt. Bad plan.

Negative 18?! Holy moly!!! 😱 I was nearly in a hypothermic state today in GA...and it was only positive 19. Hmmm, I might need to invest in a Japanese kotatsu (a.k.a. table heater...one of the greatest inventions EVER) in addition to a portable heater.

Well, I'm not sure if it is reallyyou that my hosts mentioned (that's why it's a "might"). It's just when I mentioned to them that I was from GA, they started naming off two to three people that were also from GA. Don't worry, though. I've only heard good things. 😉 My undergrad was at Emory (c/o 2006). And yes, I'm definitely looking forward to snow!!! For moving, I'll most likely rent a moving truck and actually drive to WI since I already have two full size beds, a study desk, a futon sofa bed, and a load of other craps in my mom's basement...no point in buying new things if I already have them~. BTW, how long is the drive from GA to WI??? I'm trying to figure out if my 1994 Volvo (w/ +190,000 miles) will last the drive.

Lol. I especially LOVE the second news and how it smoothly transitions from a local community news into football news...Well, I guess I'll have to become more knowledgeable in football, huh? This will be an interesting transition, indeed.

ecca, the drive is only a couple of days if there's not a freakin' record blizzard in Kentucky. Which, you know, there probably won't be in the summer when *you're* moving. If your old Volvo is happy on the highway, you'll probably be fine.

Long underwear is the rule of the day for the special weather. Also hats, scarves, mittens, and really good snow boots, which you should get when you get up here since you probably won't find any in Georgia. I have a fleece balaclava (hat that covers your face) with a neoprene face mask that covers my nose. I LOVE IT. If you wear enough clothes, and have covered parking at home, and heat bundled into your rent where you don't have to think about what it costs, most of the time you don't have to be cold.

Oh, I thought that was all for a bank robbery...

today is definitely long underwear day, since I'll be taking the MCTS mode of transportation home...

I just wear normal clothes and a scarf and gloves and a coat. Keeps me warm enough.

Same here. It's a rare day that I put on the long undies, because usually you work up too much of a sweat when moving around. Then they just become counterproductive by making you cold when they hold all the moisture to your body.

Hey guys,

I matched at MCW. 👍

The drive here was about 13 hours or so.

Dan was my intern too. He's awesome.

So I just found out that my brother was actually AT the game last night. I had no idea. I told him I would've looked for him on tv if i had known. He said he was the guy in blaze orange...

BTW, I'm a Vikings fan.

And I've never worn long underwear. My brothers and uncles wear them. I tend to associate them with farm work.

I'm a Jets and Lions fan... some of us are just unlucky.

I root for the Pack when I don't want to be depressed.

I wear long johns when I go skiing or sledding -- stuff that involves being in the snow for long periods of time.

I wear them often when it's cold. I'm a delicate freakin' flower.

Yes...good snow booties. I was like "Where on earth will I find them in GA?" 😕 Then, my friends told me that I could probably go to a ski shop during Feb...when it's sales time! Long undies are also on the list of "things-to-buy-before-MCW." I believe I will be spending a lot of money on winter clothes this year.

Everything will be peachy as long as my car lasts. I think it can take the drive since it was the "highway" car that my dad used to commute from OH to GA during every other weekend for the past couple of years. However, the rest of my famiy is worried that it'll die during the trip.

Hey guys,

I matched at MCW. 👍

Congratulations!!! 😀

I drive a '94 as well... besides the missing turn signal, newly smashed sideview mirror, and lack of power steering, it's a rockstar, and it'll be moving with me to residency. WOOHOO.

hello everybody. i got my mcw acceptance in december! i'm excited to move down to milwaukee from MN! i've been searching for apartments right now, and i was wondering ... are there are a lot of apartments near campus that just aren't advertised online? There doesn't seem to be much at apartments.com that are close...

call me crazy, but i can't wait to start!

Yeah, most of the places by school are best found by driving around and calling the numbers posted out front. I live 2.5 miles away, found my apartment on one of the websites and signed a lease, sight unseen. Not the best plan, usually, but I've been here for four years and have been very happy.

Yay! I'm IN!!! Couldn't be more excited right now 😀

The lack of powersteering?! 😱 And it doesn't affect your driving? You must be a rockstar driver~! 😀

Congratulations! Are you going to be my classmate?! Horrah! I can't wait to start either. Since December, I've been stalking this particular thread like crazy. 😛

Basically, if you were to meet Xandie, you would know to end that last sentence before the last word. Is that a convoluted enough sentence there for ya?

Congrats to all you guys who got in.

Yes, I am a rockstar in all ways. Behold my stick shift driving, no power steering, parallel parking mastery. And I'm a wee person, leading to some serious tricep development from driving.

And congratulations to the M-0s!

Yes we're going to be classmates! Congrats to you too!! 😀

Georgia, huh? You are going to be cold! hehe

It at least snows in GA -- I just saw it on the news. It's doable... just invest in an electric mattress pad and electic blanket. Those are my 2 new favorite things I own, I preheat my bed. That and I only go outside when absolutely necessary.

Growing up, I had to go find snow, and I remember being excited 1 morning when it was 39F because it was a temp where it could snow if it just got a little colder. Now, I just want to get away from it.

I like hot (and dry) so much more than cold.

There is an REI near emory off I-85 and N Druid Hills....lots of sweet outdoor stuff.

PS. its cold today

Aaah, I must add those to my list! Then, my bed can become nice and toasty~. Mmmm.

Darn it.

He's joking. It wasn't cold. It was all the way up to -7 when I left this morning.

HELP!!!!

I am interviewing at MCW tomorrow, and was supposed to be attending the Thursday Night Social, but my flight was cancelled and I will be arriving late tonight, so late that I have to get a hotel. I was intending to figure out my reasons for attending the school from my host and at the social, but of course this is no longer possible. Can anyone give me some compelling reasons as to why you attended MCW, or why you would attend MCW? I would appreciate anyone's response.

Money and chicks. Why else would anyone want to go to medical school?

Disclaimer: I have not attended MCW. I have, however, worked at a hospital where MCW students have clinical rotations.

In Milwaukee, you will be exposed to patients with a vast array of health problems. You will see upper-class people from the suburbs who have excellent health insurance. You will see people who live in utter poverty and have children with roach-exacerbated asthma, children with lead poisoning. You will learn how to take care of people from a variety of backgrounds with anything from minor to catastrophic health conditions. The hospitals where you will rotate have every specialty you can name, and people travel for miles (>100 at times) to seek care at Froedtert and St. Mary's.

Hope that helps and good luck. 🙂

Has anyone run into any problems with the credit report? I had a spell of pretty late payments when I was 19 (now 23), and they are saying I'm denied for loans. I was going to do the military scholarship to pay for school, but they said they need proof of 189,000 up front which the military won't do??!! They won't even accept if I took out a cosigned loan for this much to at least show I can afford it. This seems crazy, my credit score is very good now, but they are basically saying 189,000 up front, or go to a different school. Any suggestions?

btw the lady in the office was not very helpful

Whoa, that's a tough situation. I'd e-mail Mike Istwan if I were you.

Thanks a lot!! Does anyone know how competitive of an environment there is at MCW?

I would say not that competitive. People work together pretty well. Those that are competitive are mostly competitive within each one's self.
