MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
reminds me of a story an M4 told me on IM last semester... said that at the VA their team had a patient that just refused to eat the food...he was getting meals from elsewhere. So the guy's student started taking his food (with the patient's permission). They even changed his diet orders to something more palatable.

Was it Swee? I think Amie told me about that.

The VA food makes me nauseous. The whole pancake syrup thing... yuck. Of course, I've done six rotations at the VA, so I might be super-sensitized.

The only thing I ever get at the VA is a sub from their sandwich station. You can have them put it in their panini press, too, which is malto buono. They definitely could stand to promote a little bit healthier eating by offering the vets and staff some healthy alternatives.

What's the whole pancake syrup thing? I don't think I've ever been down there for breakfast.

PANCAKE SYRUP IS PEOPLE!!!

Not the cafeteria food, the vets food. The patient's nasty food.

And I always get grilled cheese on the panini press, oh my goodness it's tasty. And apple-cranberry juice.

Onion rings are also rather good, but not so much on the good for you list.

Oh...I've always tried to ignore their food, 'cause it definitely smells funky. All hospital food kind of has that distinct smell that never really changes no matter what is on the trays.

one of my least favorite smells ever is the smell of breakfast at the VA when you first walk onto the wards in the morning. it is like hitting that "wall" of cadaver smell in anatomy lab. I just hate the smell of eggs/sausage/mush that permeates through the place and combines with the general aroma in the hospital. I've especially noticed it at the VA...not so much other hospitals. But I've definitely smelled it at nursing homes in the morning as well.

I hate that breakfast smell.

Quick question for those of you who have done the whole first day of med school thing before. I'm planning a trip to Europe for this summer. How much time do you think I need to get settled in Milwaukee before orientation starts? I'm thinking about spending all of July there. I'm probably living with friends, so I'm hoping to have housing set up before I go, and I live in Madison, so moving isn't going to be a big deal. Bad plan? I really want to maximize my travel time, and I have a July 5th wedding to go to.

I can't imagine it would take more than a week to set up house. Plus, during orientation, the schedule is long and you'll be tired, but if you have to, you could finish up any last minute stuff then.

I'm only giving myself about a week to set up for residency, then taking off (although not for Europe). If you're efficient and don't spend most of your "set-up" time watching TV/browsing the internet.

Shouldn't be a problem, especially if you have housing arrangements or are moved in before your trip. If it were me, I would probably give myself at least a couple days back in the country before the first day, just in case something went wrong with the return flight and I were delayed in getting back.

FYI, MCW is extremely anal about being there for the first day/registration. Even to the point of threatening a ~$300 fine if you are more than 15 minutes late on the first day.

I beat you that time, trouble maker!

I need something to do with my time. Good Lord, this is pathetic.

I moved in early July, but I don't think you should have a problem moving in early August. Plenty of students were moving in the week before orientation started, some without even having a place to live lined up yet (although I wouldn't advise that last part).

You would pay that much for a 10 year old car? Seems steep.
You ever price out a Honda/Toyota? Their value just doesn't drop. My '99 Acura was $10,000 in 2005. Granted, it started at more like $28,000, but I'd be wary of buying a Toyota/Honda for less than $4000....

my 2004 Toyota Matrix has 82,000 miles on it and is still supposedly worth around 8,000. Granted the value may be diminished due to the hood/bumper transplant it received in 2005.

Still, definitely not bad since I once only got about 4,000 for a Dodge Neon of the same age with half the mileage and largely the same options/setup.

Definitely consider warranty length when getting a car, too.

Of course the love of good friends and fun times that have been experienced with my car probably up its value to around 60,000 at least, probably more with my autograph on the hood.

Got enough miles on your car, there? My '94 has a grand total of 113k. Then again, it's been to medical school twice and law school once. Very well educated, not so well traveled.

Really? 😱 Well, I'll just have to set three alarm clocks on that special day. 😀

BTW Penguin, I love Korean food, too. If you find any good restaurants before me, let me know!!!

Yup. It's special alright....

😴😉

i seem to remember about 5 different people saying we were now "professionals" and that we were being "held to a higher standard."

And most of them made some joke about the Packers obsession here, saying that the out of staters will probably be a little shocked by it, blah blah blah. Don't the compare notes before writing these damn speeches??? for the love of Xandie, that was one week I'd never re-live.

Oh poo. I might have to kiss goodbye to karaoke. I've never sang at those open karaoke bar before. Large crowds scare me. :scared: I don't think drinking will help the situation, either.

Maybe I'll have to move on to my next hobby. Ok. from now, I will save up for a PS3.

What I've found about karaoke in bars is that nobody is listening to you anyway. They just look to see who you are so they can count on their fingers when it will be their turn to sing again. Oh, sure, they clap when they're done, but that's because it's closer to their turn. That helps my nerves a lot. Apparently John Christy's karaoke shows are pretty good--he has a very nice selection. When you're closer to moving up, I can find out what nights they are.

i don't know about that. karaoke is how I got my first record deal that launched my platinum debut album. somebody is listening. If you can dream it, you can BE it!

Also... does anybody have any advice about managing finances while married in medical school?

I'm getting married to my fiance this summer before starting up school and we're attempting to figure out how to manage things for the upcoming year. (and beyond...) He'll be working and going to school part-time to finish up his bachelor's degree while I'll be pulling out the loans for medical school. We're basically at a complete loss on even where to start because we're young, inexperienced and clueless hehe 🙂 Any thoughts would be great...

Get a lot of your groceries at Aldi's, bring lunches from home, make your own pot of coffee and bring it in a thermos or switch to tea. Read the Tightwad Gazette to get in a serious savings mind frame and then ignore a lot of it.

I love Toyota cars. We used to have this great old '94 Camry that made several trips to AZ and back that regrettably died last year. I almost cried because I was so attached ... hehe 😀

We're looking at a Mazda Protege right now because its value actually DOES drop.

Penquin, on the East Side on Prospect Avenue there's a Korean restaurant called Han Kuk Kwan. 🙂

YES! that is awesome. thanks!!! i am a fan of food 😛... especially korean food!

A money-saving food tip: if several of you go together to get a CostCo membership (it's $50/year, so definitely make it a team effort) there's a ton of convenient frozen food that actually tastes good.

Awww~, you (and everyone else on this thread) are soooo nice! 😉 Thank you thank you. I guess I will have to improve my singing ability before I move up to WI.

So what should I expect for Orientation? I know I shouldn't scream,"We're all going to be doctors," but what other advices do you guys have for us M-0s?

When you're doing blood pressure training and the M-3s and M-4s are walking around offering to help you with stuff, do NOT tell one of them they can find your femoral pulse. That will NOT impress.

Yes, true story.

I want a platinum debut album, too.

Hmmm, so when you're doing manual BP training, I'm guessing we're also taking BPs from the thighs, too? I've auto-ran BP on the thighs, but I don't think I've done a manual BP on them...

Yeah, not so much.

He was not cute. I was also married. It was weird.

and i agree... everyone here is very nice and so helpful!

DON'T LEASE. It makes almost no sense unless you like to drive the newest high-end luxury cars and you want a new model every other year, or if you are a business owner and can deduct the depreciation and such. Don't even buy a car that's younger than 3-4 years. These days, a car with 40-60,000 miles will probably still be under the factory warranty. Check out a site like http://milwaukee.craigslist.org and look at the cars for sale. Some people have to ditch a car fast (called up to active duty in the military, medical emergency, etc), and the cars are a pretty good deal. My wife and I are getting a second car soon, and our target is something like a '98 Toyota Corolla/Camry for $4000, and we'll just pay that in cash.

Having a car payment is a great way to talk yourself into spending too much on a car.

I'll sell you my 95 civic for $2500. It is a great car. The speedometer doesn't work.

You shouldn't need a speedometer in that car. You should be able to tell by the rumbling. I get all freaked out when driving rental cars and tend to speed, because I'm used to the road bump method of speed monitoring.

have you put all those miles on it? that's a lot of driving.

There are just way too many posts in this thread for me to actually read them...but I wanted to post here as I am very excited about being a part of MCW c/o 2012 🙂

On a rather pointless note - my 2003 Toyota Corolla has 80K miles on it...and I put em all on there...so the 2004 with 80+ doesn't seem too high to me! Depends on where you live I guess.

🙂

Pointless notes! You fit right in!!

And you think this is too long, go look at c/o 2009. We're somewhere around 5500 posts there. Rah!

oh, come on, 500 posts wouldn't take you that long

Congrats, spilledmilk!!! I believe we'll be classmates in about couple of months! Whoohoo!

Anyway, yes, 80K is nothing compared to my +190K (unfortunately, I didn't contribute too much to this. it's all my daddy's fault.) I wonder how I can get the gasmeter to work? I never know how much gas I have.

you could just track your gas mileage

you could just track your gas mileage

That's what I do now. But I would really like to drive until it's almost empty! (you know, until the low-gas light pops on) I guess I just want to be really cheap.

It's not cheaper to drive until it's nearly empty, (unless you need to know if you can hold out a couple more days in case prices drop) and you want to keep at least a half tank in during winter anyway.

Yeah, not so much.

He was not cute. I was also married. It was weird.

What if he would have been cute, and you had been single?

Sidebar (of Bakhtiar):

I get to work with Xandie for a whole entire month!

It will probably be much better than the past month with snotty splatty, but from what I'm hearing, you should have your PDA well stocked with games.

We don't need PDA games. I think we should bring a chessboard. And there's always thumbwars.

Your sidebar sounds sarcastic. Are you not excited? I'm fun.

No sarcasm at all. I 😍 you.

This past month was boring as heck.

The door fell off my family's 95 toyota corolla at about 150K miles while my brother was driving it, so he had to steer with his left, and hold onto the door with his right. I guess that way he had more leverage.

It's totally worth just buying a costco membership for 1 person. You'll save $50 in a year. It's also totally illegal to have >1 person on 1 membership.

I moved in early July, but I don't think you should have a problem moving in early August. Plenty of students were moving in the week before orientation started, some without even having a place to live lined up yet (although I wouldn't advise that last part).

I actually had a comittment until like the day before orientation started, so I flew in and my wife packed up the truck and we moved in during orientation week. It was easy.

if you're serious, I will keep this in mind. I'd get the speedo fixed though.

do you have maintenance records? how many miles?

Um, I'll have to look. The big problem these cars tend to have is with the head gasket, and I just replaced that, so everything else should be great.

135K miles. The previous owner gave me the maintenence records I think but I'll have to hunt for them in my files. I remember there had not been anything major done. Like I said, most of reviews I read online before buying the car indicated that the Civic is like the energizer bunny mechanically, except for that head gasket thing.

Is it against policies to sell your car on SDN? Maybe PMs are better if you want more info.

I think you're supposed to have replaced the timing belt and water pump (had to do it on my Acura), which is like $450. After unloading nearly $2400 on repairs on my car this year, I don't want to buy anything that still needs repairs...

Although if I buy a car for $2500, I might just not bother doing anything to it and drive it until it breaks.
