reminds me of a story an M4 told me on IM last semester... said that at the VA their team had a patient that just refused to eat the food...he was getting meals from elsewhere. So the guy's student started taking his food (with the patient's permission). They even changed his diet orders to something more palatable.

one of my least favorite smells ever is the smell of breakfast at the VA when you first walk onto the wards in the morning. it is like hitting that "wall" of cadaver smell in anatomy lab. I just hate the smell of eggs/sausage/mush that permeates through the place and combines with the general aroma in the hospital. I've especially noticed it at the VA...not so much other hospitals. But I've definitely smelled it at nursing homes in the morning as well.

I hate that breakfast smell.

Quick question for those of you who have done the whole first day of med school thing before. I'm planning a trip to Europe for this summer. How much time do you think I need to get settled in Milwaukee before orientation starts? I'm thinking about spending all of July there. I'm probably living with friends, so I'm hoping to have housing set up before I go, and I live in Madison, so moving isn't going to be a big deal. Bad plan? I really want to maximize my travel time, and I have a July 5th wedding to go to.

I can't imagine it would take more than a week to set up house. Plus, during orientation, the schedule is long and you'll be tired, but if you have to, you could finish up any last minute stuff then.

I'm only giving myself about a week to set up for residency, then taking off (although not for Europe). If you're efficient and don't spend most of your "set-up" time watching TV/browsing the internet.

Shouldn't be a problem, especially if you have housing arrangements or are moved in before your trip. If it were me, I would probably give myself at least a couple days back in the country before the first day, just in case something went wrong with the return flight and I were delayed in getting back.

FYI, MCW is extremely anal about being there for the first day/registration. Even to the point of threatening a ~$300 fine if you are more than 15 minutes late on the first day.

I moved in early July, but I don't think you should have a problem moving in early August. Plenty of students were moving in the week before orientation started, some without even having a place to live lined up yet (although I wouldn't advise that last part).

You ever price out a Honda/Toyota? Their value just doesn't drop. My '99 Acura was $10,000 in 2005. Granted, it started at more like $28,000, but I'd be wary of buying a Toyota/Honda for less than $4000....

my 2004 Toyota Matrix has 82,000 miles on it and is still supposedly worth around 8,000. Granted the value may be diminished due to the hood/bumper transplant it received in 2005.

Still, definitely not bad since I once only got about 4,000 for a Dodge Neon of the same age with half the mileage and largely the same options/setup.

Definitely consider warranty length when getting a car, too.

Of course the love of good friends and fun times that have been experienced with my car probably up its value to around 60,000 at least, probably more with my autograph on the hood.

I'm getting married to my fiance this summer before starting up school and we're attempting to figure out how to manage things for the upcoming year. (and beyond...) He'll be working and going to school part-time to finish up his bachelor's degree while I'll be pulling out the loans for medical school. We're basically at a complete loss on even where to start because we're young, inexperienced and clueless hehe 🙂 Any thoughts would be great...

Get a lot of your groceries at Aldi's, bring lunches from home, make your own pot of coffee and bring it in a thermos or switch to tea. Read the Tightwad Gazette to get in a serious savings mind frame and then ignore a lot of it.

I love Toyota cars. We used to have this great old '94 Camry that made several trips to AZ and back that regrettably died last year. I almost cried because I was so attached ... hehe 😀

We're looking at a Mazda Protege right now because its value actually DOES drop.

A money-saving food tip: if several of you go together to get a CostCo membership (it's $50/year, so definitely make it a team effort) there's a ton of convenient frozen food that actually tastes good.

DON'T LEASE. It makes almost no sense unless you like to drive the newest high-end luxury cars and you want a new model every other year, or if you are a business owner and can deduct the depreciation and such. Don't even buy a car that's younger than 3-4 years. These days, a car with 40-60,000 miles will probably still be under the factory warranty. Check out a site like http://milwaukee.craigslist.org and look at the cars for sale. Some people have to ditch a car fast (called up to active duty in the military, medical emergency, etc), and the cars are a pretty good deal. My wife and I are getting a second car soon, and our target is something like a '98 Toyota Corolla/Camry for $4000, and we'll just pay that in cash.

Having a car payment is a great way to talk yourself into spending too much on a car.

I'll sell you my 95 civic for $2500. It is a great car. The speedometer doesn't work.

You shouldn't need a speedometer in that car. You should be able to tell by the rumbling. I get all freaked out when driving rental cars and tend to speed, because I'm used to the road bump method of speed monitoring.

It's not cheaper to drive until it's nearly empty, (unless you need to know if you can hold out a couple more days in case prices drop) and you want to keep at least a half tank in during winter anyway.

The door fell off my family's 95 toyota corolla at about 150K miles while my brother was driving it, so he had to steer with his left, and hold onto the door with his right. I guess that way he had more leverage.

It's totally worth just buying a costco membership for 1 person. You'll save $50 in a year. It's also totally illegal to have >1 person on 1 membership.

I actually had a comittment until like the day before orientation started, so I flew in and my wife packed up the truck and we moved in during orientation week. It was easy.

Um, I'll have to look. The big problem these cars tend to have is with the head gasket, and I just replaced that, so everything else should be great.

I think you're supposed to have replaced the timing belt and water pump (had to do it on my Acura), which is like $450. After unloading nearly $2400 on repairs on my car this year, I don't want to buy anything that still needs repairs...


Although if I buy a car for $2500, I might just not bother doing anything to it and drive it until it breaks.
