MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The Yeshiva school on the East Side has a pretty good reputation, and lots of board-in kids. I believe there's a Lebovitcher school up in Mequon.

The most Jewish neighborhoods are Whitefish Bay and up in Mequon, both reasonable hikes from the campus.

There's also a Jewish grocery store (where I buy all my Pesadic food, as I have a strong predeliction for Streit's matzoh) on 47th and Burleigh.

Are you Jewish, Xandie?

Marc, you're hilarious.

Thanks Xandie, My husband actually went to that school for high school. My kids are much younger (oldest will be in 1st grade) so we are looking at YES (yeshiva elementary school) and The Academy. We would probably buy a house near that Burleigh and 47th area since that is where most of my children's future classmates live and I want them to be close to their friends. Are you also M-0?

Ha, no, M-4.

🙂

Nevermind, I see your profile says m-4. 🙂

you beat me to it!

I'm bored. 🙂

yes, avoid MPS. That's all I have to say about that.
Yeah, I can think of a grand total of one high school (Rufus King) that is actually a GOOD school. Bay View and Bradley Tech can't go a day without having to call in MPD at least once.

There's also plenty of Jewish people in Glendale, Fox Point, and River Hills, with the cost of living in those areas being $$, $$$$$$, and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, respectively.

I'll stick to the $ areas LOL!!

Given Milwaukee's $ areas, you might want to stick to at least the $$ areas. 😉

...coming from the scariest looking avatar on SDN. If I can go to school with you, I can handle anything. 😉 What year are you?

M2, so you probably won't see much of me, as we all vanish away to the wards when the clock ticks 12 on July 1st.

The best part about MCW is 4 more Summerfest's. Unless you are MD/Ph.D. then it is like, 8 more Summerfest's.

For those of you who don't know about Milwaukee:

It's a blast.

Gosh, I'm so excited about the summerfest!!! In GA, we don't get too much large-scale festivities.

Another Q:

What cell phone providers work/don't work in MCW, Milwaukee area?

I have t-mobile, but I don't want my apartment to be trapped in a no-signal zone.

Your cell phone won't work in most parts of MCW. Case closed. The building must've been designed to be a Faraday cage.

That being said, yes, MCW is a black hole for cell phones in general. But I switched from US Cellular to Verizon between M2 and M3 and I have a much better overall cellular telefonic experience in both southeastern and northeastern Wisconsin.

If you like beer and underdressed, oversized drunken and borderline comatose people, Summerfest is your nirvana.

Oh, and it helps if you like overrated 80s butt-rawk too.

My apartment was a no-signal zone for Cingular/AT&T, so I switched to T-Mobile and I'm happier now. I get signal in some parts of the building at MCW, though not very many. But at least I didn't have to stand outside like I did before.

I think the Verizon people get the best signal around here, but T-Mobile is definitely livable.

I'm on Verizon and am pretty happy with the signal around (and in) school. I still wish I was on T-Mobile though, if for no other reason than Catherine Zeta-Jones is a very convincing spokeswoman.

In other words, she's hot.

hey and congrats to future classmates! yay!
i'm excited to meet everyone!!

have you all had success finding relatively reasonable places to live that aren't crazy expensive?? i'm hoping for a 2 bedroom under 1000... is that a pipe dream? hehe

The building must've been designed to be a Faraday cage.

have you ever heard of the faraday cage wallets? pretty cool... 😎

My 2 bedroom is $650. It would be $630 without my pets.

pets! cats or dogs? or both?

well that is promising! are you close or far from mcw?

Nope. Mine is $775 and is huge, with 2 bedrooms and a study and hardwood floors (but no covered parking and we have to shovel). If you don't need a huge place or big luxury, your dream is very doable.

Two cats. They say hi.

And I'm 2.5 miles from MCW, easy ten-fifteen minutes most days. But not tomorrow.

Easily. I checked out a place on 90th and Bluemound - 2BR, 1 bath, heat included for $625 a month. The landlord turned out to be crazy, so I picked a bigger 2BR, 1 bath, heat not included for $675 a month. Unless you move into the relatively newly built apartment buildings (like the Reserve or Serafino), you'd almost have trouble finding anything over $850 on this end of town.

cute! hi back to your cats. 🙂 haha

thanks for the tips. i'm sighing with relief that i'll be able to live someplace other than a cardboard box.

I love that you called it "the summerfest." I grew up in Milwaukee area and to me, it is just Summerfest...it's a huge deal in these parts. But it's refreshing to hear someone who's never heard of it before! MCW is a top choice of mine, so maybe we can catch a concert together at the summerfest!

What is the best resource to start finding apartments at MCW? I'm used to Marquette just giving me a big booklet...haha.

Do any students live downtown on or near Marquette?

Sure, one of my classmates is dating a dental student and lives a few blocks from Marquette.

My T-Mobile phone has worked everywhere but the interior of the school and Normandy Village apartments.

Plenty of people live downtown/East side, so if that's where you want to be, I say go for it. Sure you have to drive to school, but the traffic is nothing compared to other cities. And the construction on the Marquette interchange starts wrapping up at the end of 2008/2009.

I bet construction ends the day we graduate, as long as I match somewhere that's not here. If I match here, they'll manage to stretch it out for another year or 2.

My Verizon phone doesn't have reception in the AC or the bowels of Froedtert. Otherwise, it's pretty decent.

I have 1 cat and 2 turtles about 15 blocks from MCW, 2 beds for $655 including heat (which is nice, heat here can be like $100 in the winter).

Phew, that's a relief. Now, I can debate whether I want to keep T-Mobile (my bf & majority of my friends have it...I love mobile-to-mobile) or switch to Verizon (all of my family members have it except me). Aaah, decisions, decisions. 😎

Kitties! I 😍 kitties!

Yes, it's "THE summerfest." 😀 At least, that's how Mike emphasized it. We should totally catch a concert together!!! I've never been to a musical concert (other than classical) so I'll probably need someone to guide me around.

Aaah, kitties. I seriously thought about getting one in WI. Too bad I'm allergic to kitties. 🙁

Man, why are 1-bedrooms so expensive?! I don't think I'll be able to find one that's less than $600. Poo~. I guess I'll just have to fly to WI and start apartment-hunting during May/June. Does anyone know which month(s) the leasing offices will be offering specials on apartments? 😕 I thought it was around May, but I could be totally wrong.

Another question:

What kind of board review books would you upperclassmen recommend to us M-0s? I hear that it's a good idea to study your courseworks w/ board-review books. Since I didn't do so hot in the MCAT, I want to make sure that I score well on the Board. Of course I won't start studying now, but since those books are expensive, I wanted to see how much I should save up.

I've heard about the BRS series and the High-Yield series. Would you recommend these or are others out there that are better?

I recommend holding on for now, and when you get here check out what the bookstore has to offer so you can see which ones work best for you, then buy them from whatever source you prefer. There are vast differences between various brands.

Yeah, the 1-br cost almost as much as the 2-br. Right now I live in a 1-br on 68th for $625 with heat included. I have a dog too, and it was an extra $250 security deposit for her.

None, unless you want to use BRS phys while taking phys, and BRS path or Goljan M2 year.

Another weird question.

What are the names of the local grocery stores? I'm not sure if it's the same as GA (I get my groceries at Publix, Kroger, maybe at WholeFoods). My friends in DC told me that they had a hard time looking for grocery stores, because they weren't familiar with them.

Are you guys tired of my questions yet? 😕

I go to Pick 'n Save (which, incidentally, is what my toddler does with boogers). There is also Jewel, Sentry, and...sigh...Piggly Wiggly.

Isn't there a whole foods as well? Or a Trader Joes?

Isn't there a whole foods as well? Or a Trader Joes?

We have both on the east side of town. There's also a local health food co-op called Outpost with a branch on State Street, pretty close to the school. Pic-n-Save and Sentry are also on State Street (there's another Pic-n-Save on Bluemound Road, but for some reason it's awful), and a Sendick's (a little more hoity-toity local chain) on North Avenue, further north of campus. There are Aldi stores (those little cheap stores where you bring your own bags) on S. 60th and S. 35th.

There's also a Partial Foods not too far from MCW.

Food! So important! I was so happy to find out there was a Trader Joe's in Miluwakee.

One more question (sorry about all the questions!).. what sort of internet providers are in the area? and are most places capable of getting high speed internet?... my fiance is computer science and internet is extremely important to him hehehe 😀

Providers include Time Warner Cable and AT&T DSL. Other providers (like AOL and Milwaukee PC) work through those two providers, I think. Most of the metro area gets one or the other, usually both. I think either one runs around $20/month.

you guys might know this - what kind of options do we have around here for pre-paid phones? I'm feeling a bit disinclined to sign onto another 2-year contract, especially when I often don't use my phone very much.
