MCW Class of 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
quick question for the current students- What do people generally wear to class/orientation? I'm still packing (I'm a fairly talented procrastinator) and I'm trying to figure out what, if anything I can leave behind. Is it pretty casual?

You can wear whatever you want to class - totally casual atmosphere here. (shorts/jeans & t-shirt for most people most days). Make sure you pack plenty of sweatshirts and other warm stuff, because the auditoriums here are cold, even in the summer. You need some dress clothes, but won't have to dress up very often during 1st year.
I wore casual, shorts & polo shirt with sandals or something like that for orientation, but I think the school started requesting that people dress up more for the 1st day of orientation. Someone else should confirm that.

Cheese curds? Saz's, hands down.

After watching the olympic opening ceremonies, I have decided that I want to form an olympic hide-n-seek team. Sign-ups will take place at orientation

They take your ID picture the first day, so they want you to dress nicely. Temperatures in Kerrigan Auditorium will be highly variable, so plan accordingly. There will be occasional shadowing and patient interviewing sessions where you'll have to dress professionally, also. Otherwise, be comfy.

Edited to add: I recommend bringing old clothes for anatomy lab. It's cheaper than buying scrubs.

The KFC was kind of in the "hood" like location ... maybe. I think I blocked it out. Haha. My handy-dandy nuvi took me there.

BTW, the beach was awesome!!! I've rarely been around big bodies of water so it was pretty neat. I forgot how hot those sands get. Oh, and if you ever want coffee by the beach, go to Alterra (free-wifi included)! Their mocha shake was pretty decent/rich.

Wait, isn't it hot, humid, oppressive, and mosquito-y right now?

I had cheese curds up at a restaurant in menomenee falls. I forget the street/name, but it was on my way to Community Memorial Hospital.

I like Kopp's or Gilles custard. mmmm

current conditions are:
Mid to upper 70s. Partly cloudy. light breeze. low humidity.

The only problem with that weather is it's 10-15 degrees too warm. But I'll take it.

It's perfect for me. Possibly I'll be experiencing my first summer thunderstorm later on this afternoon/evening.

So I'll be biking to school from my place and I was wondering where I can keep my bike while at school. I didn't see any bike racks outside of the college building.

I'm wondering how the exams are scheduled for the M1. Is there a test every week? Thanks.

No, they're clumped together in blocks. Your schedule should already be available on the MCW website.

badasshairday, there's a big line of bike racks just to the right of the entrance by the security office. Can't miss them.

I took a bike ride today and took a bunch of pictures of the medical center like an over zealous M1. Is the bike rack inside the main college building? I guess I'll see it for sure tomorrow.

On another Milwaukee related note, I got some Milwaukee's Best Ice Beer.

It's on the north side of the building. If you are standing outside facing the big revolving doors that face onto 87th street, it is on the side of the building to the right. Walk around there, to the entrance where the security guards are. The bike racks are on that side of the building, but set well back from the street, up that little driveway.

Dude, I can't afford that fancy stuff. Is it cheap too? Man, Milwaukee is soooo freakin cheap for beer so far, it is incredible.

I like PBR. You can get a 30 pack for like $14. If you plan on stocking up, go to Discount Liquor on 51st and Oklahoma. It's practically a warehouse.

That's interesting. You didn't strike me as the type.

Then go on the Sprecher & Lakefront brewery tours. For $4 and $6, respectively, you will get to sample all of their brews and will get drunk, to boot.

Where are you from, badass?

We just had a bottle of their Wisconsin Belgian Red with dinner last night. Delicioso!

i'm trying to decide if i want to have an alcoholic beverage with dinner tonight.

I probably shouldn't, seeing as I'll be at work during that time.

Hmmm, yes, that may be frowned upon. Of course, you could always just blame the smell of your breath on the ED patients.

So, I'm getting these weird fill out corporate compliance emails from MCW. Its some annual certificate and I read through it but nothing seems to apply. And it asks for an employee ID. I definately didn't have this first year. Is this something second years get?

California. I just realized that Milwaukee's Best is known as the BEAST and it is on par with natty ice and ****. It was pretty bad yesterday, but it got me in a good buzz.

Wow, how long has it been since I posted on SDN? And how does the 2012 thread already have more posts than the 2008 thread?

Anyway, welcome to all the new M1s.

Hey achybrachy, I was wondering if yau had fallen off the edge of the earth or something. Where did you end up matching?

Actually I didn't match (and thank you for grinding salt in my wound), I had to scramble into an FP program in Arkansas, which is currently on probation, so hopefully it will still be around in time for me to take my boards.

Dag, bro.

I was tricked and ended up over dressing for today. We didn't even take photos today. I think that is tomorrow. And a composite photo. What is that anyway? anyone?

No idea about the composite - sounds like some sort of futuristic 3D imaging technique or something (I assure you it's not something cool like that, though). I saw some M1s in the parking lot who were wearing very nice dresses - they looked good. Sorry if it was us who mislead you into overdressing.

Let this be a lesson to all you M1s - P does technically equal MD, but just barely. 😀

(Really hoping that I'm remembering correctly that yeasterbunny and achybrachy are the same person, otherwise I'm a total dick...)

wow, so med school has begun, huh? I'm not envious of you guys. Sabina will take you for a wild ride. Are you going to get Dr. Wagner for his 61st year of teaching?

I've gotten those emails since M1 year. I just delete them.

That's what you get for failing the BOSCE and step 2 CS.

I thought pictures were like day 2, since first day there's 5 million tiny lectures. Then day 2 they have those break out rooms like TB testing, IDs, financial aid appt sign up, picture, etc.

Anyway, the room you'll be in most of the time is chilly, though they've made it warmer sometimes. If the library weren't so cold, I would've worn shorts a lot more than I did.

Like I said in May. Tuesday for pictures.

Nobody listens to Ashers. Just like with the license/registration stuff. [goes off to post call nap to feel sorry for herself]

Sabina is definately a trip. Even though he told us in several lectures "know this in blue, this in red, ignore the blue there and that red there..." What the heck should we know? I did like him and did enjoy his teaching much more than other lecturers. My favorite was Dr. Woo in Neuro. I actually used his vestibular lecture today when my mom had vertigo. Turned out to be BPPV. It was on my differential diagnosis list! I got semi pimped by the doctor she saw and actually remembered the Dix-Hallpike maneuver for diagnosis. Thank god they didn't do it on her because I had to drive her home!

yeah, try to keep your personal physicians from knowing that you are in med school.

post call naps are the greatest...until you wake up in a panic trying to figure out where you are and where your pager is.

The worst is when you can't figure out that it's actually only 7 PM, not AM, and you didn't actually sleep all the way through the night.

I totally don't understand anything you just said. I don't think I learned any neuro.

Tonken vs. WAC

Is it worth 50$ a month for the WAC if all I care about is using some free weights and machines to lift? I'm not into playing basketball at the gym and stuff.

There's no rush. The $50 a month WAC will always be there. There are free weights and a few machines at Tonkens, so if you don't need the swimming pool and the towel service, try Tonkens first. Your wallet will thank you.

That is what I was thinking. Plus it is so convenient since it is right there. I don't know why people (some M1's I talked to today) think they need to go to the WAC just to move some weights around. Sure it is great if you need a swimming pool and basketball courts or whatever.

Plus I heard from an M2 that the WAC is pretty busy and has a lot of people that go there just to check each other out. Like girls with a bunch of make up on that work out so slow so that they don't break a sweat. I mean, I guess that is great and all if you are looking for someone... but definitely not my thing.

The WAC is just very, very, nice, and Tonkens is very, very, small and sometimes smells sweaty. If you're used to the finer things in life, I can see where you would be tempted to spend the money.

I see. I guess i'm just the type that is happy with a bench, barbell, dumbells.

I myself am the type that is happy to have that kind of money in my pocket instead of the WAC's pocket. So I can see where you're coming from.

First day of school tomorrow...exciting, but at the same time, ugh:scared:
so it's weird going on here (for the first time in MONTHS) and knowing who some of you posters are now! i'm sure my non-sdn identity is pretty obvious, too 😀
