MD MD Class of 2022 How we feeling?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Been doing the things I wont have time for in school, ie drinking, working out and reading for pleasure.

Plan on showing up hungover, in shape and unprepared.
This is who y'all want to make friends with right here  No one's gonna be like, "Oh wow, you pre-read First Aid? We should chill!" When the flood comes, everyone prefers to sink together, in good company.

1. Pre-studying would be a waste of time and a huge mistake, as it would take away from what you should be doing: relaxing. This is a marathon and mental fatigue is real. You need to learn to recognize when to take breaks so that you do not compromise your health.
2. First aid is a review book, meaning you should first learn the concepts before reviewing the concepts. Some kids treat it like a bible and their scores suffer because of it, as it is hard to see the forest without first venturing through the trees. When I look at it toward the end of each block, the concepts look like second nature due to the work I have put in (if that makes sense).
3. Pathoma, Sketchy, Anki, and Robbins. PPTs and lectures are for plebs or people who don’t like free time.
4. If you’re not sleeping 8+ hours a night, especially during m1, you’re doing it wrong.

Definitely not pre studying, but might just lightly review the basic biochem I learned in undergrad before school starts in a couple months. Pretty excited to start!
Good idea. I wish I did this too. I felt like I had to work so much harder than some others in my class to do well in biochem and it honestly felt pretty bad to hear them brag about how little they had to study...whereas I had to put in hours upon hours to do well

As a teacher, I’m reeealllly looking forward to the end of this school year. I have two mini-vacations planned before medical school starts. Im very curious to see just exactly how stressful medical school is. I can’t imagine any amount of studying would generate as much stress as managing 80+ 15-year-olds 5 days before summer break.

If they are bragging, they are lying. In the first two years so many people said they barely studied but it’s not true. It’s a power move.

I come from a background of high stress jobs as well. Stress comes in different flavors, unfortunately, and in medical school you will experience new stressors. But it is all about time management. The difficulty is not the issue, it’s the volume, pressure, times of isolation, type A personalities, and outdated or unfounded coursework that sucks time out of your day.

I was someone who considered pre-studying before deciding not to. Best decision of my life.

First month of medical school, I had so much saved up energy to learn and get stuff done. Had a really strong first block because I had so much momentum at the start.

You will regret not having any time to do any really fun stuff like traveling later. Get that out of the way NOW.

You will regret not being in better shape when you're suddenly too busy to exercise every day. Get in shape NOW.

You will regret not learning how to cook more things when you are in need of food and do not want to spend loans eating out every day. Learn recipes NOW.

Thanks, hearing that is reassuring, makes me feel a little better about logging all these hours studying lol

I’m stressing about selling our house. Also waiting to find out if the contract we put on a new house is going to be accepted. This is for some reason one of the most stressful things I have done and I am really hoping to have a place to live a few weeks before school starts. God bless the people who get in off waitlists at the last minute. I think I used all my saved relaxation time just stressing this month. Agh!

Not gonna front, I'm prestudying and getting research published.

And before anyone tells me to chillax instead, I also just got back from a month long trip to Europe....

People who say to chill right now are people who find studying to be a chore/job. As a physician, one should enjoy learning because one has to keep up with new developments in medicine constantly.

I think everyone would be better off if they started this process of lifelong learning ASAP

Just my $0.02 (Not trolling)

Cheers

I’m working on the ambulance 48-60 hours a week, plus getting 5 senior paramedic students ready for their licensing exam, and I’m loving every minute of it, because I know they’re my last. I’m SO excited to start medical school, but there’s a lot of things about this job I know I’m going to miss, so I’m enjoying them while I can.

(I am going to work on my Spanish, though. Thanks for the Slow News rec, SuaveCardigans!)

“As a physician”...no disrespect, but you have no idea. It takes years to truly say “as a physician” without inducing eye rolls. When you actually start, you will truly see how little you know and how ridiculous it is for a pre-med or preclinical medical student to assume that they know what it takes or what a physician should or should not be. Moreover, it is impossible to keep up with new developments, you will soon see that your time will be occupied learning what you are told to learn.

I think everyone would be better off if they started this process of lifelong learning ASAP
With this attitude, you are going to find med school to be very lonely. You haven’t even started yet you have the knowledge needed to revolutionize the game. A humbling experience awaits. You will have classmates who score twice as high doing half as much. I hope you learn to pace yourself, as this game can eat the best and brightest out there.

I also just got back from a month long trip to Europe....
On second thought, you may fit in perfectly...

Best of luck.

I agree. I haven't earned the right to use phrases like "as a physician" yet, but the idea of being a lifelong learner when practicing medicine isn't something I came up with- this is a common idea shared among many seasoned physicians.

I didn't say starting early would "revolutionize the game." I just said it would help people be better off when school starts. People might not learn a significant amount by pre-studying, but at least they are used to studying again and won't go through a lagging phase when school starts.

Can't tell if this last comment is sarcastic or not, but I love to travel and highly recommend traveling as a way to relax.

Appreciate it, boss (Not sarcastic)

This thread is just getting interesting. I don’t think I will prestudy. I searched on how to use anki, and best resources for each subject. We are all gonna be studying regardless when school starts, but we won’t have much breaks when school starts. YOLO!! You Only Live Once babe 😀 I’m gonna enjoy this break until it lasts

(Mini venting)

While I'm stoked to be starting med school in late July, I'm actually a little afraid of the multiple warnings I got from here and physicians about not having time to do what you enjoy and also spend time with loved ones.

I mean, I didnt start school yet and just from having two jobs I can see I'm slacking on making time for the gf, juggling responsibilities, letting people down, etc....I also love photography and do freelance work, I'm worried about not having time for that too. I am quitting all jobs/volunteering at end of May...hopefully I can do what I enjoy then. Just worried how it will be during med school.

Vent sesh over, lol

The advice I always give to incoming med students is to always make time for the things that are important to you. Before school starts, make a list of non-negotiables. For me that included things like going to the gym every day, going to church on Sundays, never saying no to spending time with family, and spending time on my hobby at least once a week. I decided that while medical school was extremely important, those things were more important because they make me who I am, and they make life worth living. And if doing those things meant I scored a few % lower on an exam then it would be worth it.

Quitting my job a month earlier than I initially thought — will be wrapping up on June 1. Leaving for Scandinavia on July 2. Driving to school on July 11. How is it so close to the start date already?

Using that month off of work to work out like crazy (stoked to crush some hikes and long bike rides that I haven’t been able to do during tax season at work) and to finally do a deep clean and purge all of the things I no longer want/need at the house where I grew up.

I loved growing up in California, but I am ready to leave and never call this place home again. Colorado, here I come.

To new beginnings, class of 2022. Let’s crush this.

Thank you for the advice, I really think I will implement my version of this. Recently Ive realized more and more that self care is important and should be first. Thanks!

My current job is pretty boring, so I'm excited to have important tasks to fill my time again. I'm excited to have a driving purpose towards a goal in my day to day life again. I'm not excited to watch my friends enjoy their mid-20's from my deckchair, being unable to participate. Trying to fit as many good times in this summer as possible.

Totally agree about being bummed while you watch your friends enjoy their 20's, while we will be in libraries. It also sucks to hear other current physicians I work with say the same thing; they gave up their 20's while their friends had fun, etc. I'm not complaining about going into medicine, I am super excited about it, just taking time to reflect on future sacrifices and such.

Everyones going to struggle at some point in their life. I’d rather struggle in my 20s and build a good life than enjoy my 20s and struggle later on in life. Whether it be financially, career satisfaction, etc.

Sure pre-med, tell all of us medical students how great pre-studying is. News flash, studying for pre-clinical material IS a job.

I just said it would help people be better off when school starts

lol, nope.

Feeling great about starting! I've also been working out, relaxing, partying here and there.

Anyone else still having trouble believing you were accepted? I was a re-applicant this year so maybe that's the cause, but I can't shake the feeling my acceptance is going to be taken away and this is just a sick joke lol.

I’m a non-trad who was always a bit jealous of my friends who got to go to various graduate schools, so I get this feeling from an albeit different perspective!

lol, nope.

Haha so much angst.

1) My comment is directed to other pre-med students (class of 2022, as stated in the title of this thread), so I'm not telling "[you] medical students" anything....

2) Not everyone feels that studying pre-clinical material is a job- some people actually enjoy it (masochists probably)

3) How can you say with so much certainty that pre-studying won't help, if you didn't do it yourself?

4) Relax bro

I'm a non-trad who has a career job, so I figured I would work until school starts to make a bit of extra cash since I won't be making as much for a longggg time. I just want to travel, but I guess I had to make the financially smart decision... I'm throwing most of it at my loans, but I set aside a small amount so I can travel to Japan next year during spring break.

I'm so ready to be a poor college student again *cries*

^feel that. Leaving the ol’ job tomorrow before MPH courses start Wednesday. Hopeful the summer of classes will get this old boy back into the swing of school life before med school in the fall. Excited to get back in the books, less excited about living “broke life” again for a ~decade

What are you like actually studying? Like what could you possibly study for medical school that will prepare you? Especially since you don't even know what you need to learn?

I’ve been using duolingo and it’s pretty good at helping you retain the topics you learn. The only weakness is that you have to be diligent about using the app at least an hour a day. I’ve been traveling this month so I haven’t been sticking to it.
download (1).jpg

I tried using duolingo for a while to learn Spanish and they spammed me so hard with notifications and emails when I didn't use it. But it was good app.

I plan on doing research this summer. Probably won't pre-study, but will be looking into studying tools like anki. Camping, hiking, volunteering, and swimming sound like fun to me. I've been going to the gym at least 3/4 times a week to try and get into good shape before I start up. For the med students on this forum, do you have time to go to the gym while you're in med school? How do you fit it into your routine/how often do you go?

I went to Cedar Point with 3 of my closest friends to celebrate an acceptance, and it was so much fun!!! I highly recommend it, if you like roller coasters.

I'm really grateful that I got into medical school this year. I am nervous, though, about how difficult it's going to be. If anything I really want to be mentally prepared for handling that stress. So if anyone has any good lists of stress management tools or has had something that's really worked for them during med school, that'd be super helpful! 😀

Going to have to get used to studying all day every day again instead of being able to leave my work mostly alone outside of the 8-5... A little summer grad school warm up is a nice way to ease into it again.

I feel like all these guys who are hardcore about prestudying are the same ones at the beginning of M1 who were going into astro-dermatolgical-orthopedic surgery that by the end of M1 were like “Uh... yeah FM seems cool...”

I mean.....

I'm interested in ortho, but I'm pretty sure M1 is going to kick my butt regardless of my interest in ortho/whether or not I prestudy/how much I cry during the first month, so it's all about perspective I guess

As a rising M3, knowing there will soon be 2 classes with even greater debt loads and reduced earning potential than mine provides a small measure of solace. Class of 2022, thank you for your service.
I'm honestly hoping my loan disbursement will be actual monopoly money so it will look exactly how it feels.

Exactly my plan + travel. I ordered a bunch of my favorite expensive wines to consume, have a stack of non-medical books on my desk, and I've been going to the gym 6 days a week. Have a beach vacation + an international trip planned before classes start.
