The beta version of mdapplicants.com is due 7/8, with a weeklong beta period.

So, if anyone wants to sneak a preview as well as get a chance to have your critiques/bug reports heard before the site goes live, send me a private message, and when everything is in full swing, I'll send you a link to the new site.

WOW! The very first profile. Bookmarked.

Aww, the MDapplicants fb page has only two fans! *becomes a fan* Join up, people!

Why did you feel the need to upgrade? Was the old site not "web 2.0" enough for you?

Following the trends. Tsk Tsk.

Looks good. I think you should put bold borders around the data input boxes, they are kind of hard to see.

Yep! Not web 2.0 enough.

The old site does a few things better than the new site (as some people were saying, putting it all on one ugly page like pre-dents).

The new site has a lot more neat tricks that, hopefully, make it a more valuable tool for connecting applicants.

It's not bad, a bit cleaner than the previous version but I did prefer having all the applicant information on one page, rather than having to click through several tabs. I dislike the male/female silhouettes that are in place, looks kind of...I don't know, childish.

I have to say, I kinda prefer the look of the one that the pre-dents use (example @ http://www.predents.com/?page=user&user_id=6702), it condenses everything nicely, although it could use a visual makeover.

I pretty much disagree with everything that you have said here except for the bit about it being cleaner than the previous version.

The community that appears on the front page is sort of confusing. Part of me feels like it's a feed from
a forum, but as I am reading the actual content "XXX was accepted by Dartmouth College", it's more of
status-esque facebook feed. Might I suggest renaming it to something that describes it a bit better?

Under search profiles and schools, it's merely cosmetic, but it looks like the bg isn't
loading for that container. All I see is a top and bottom image.
(http://dev.mdapplicants.com/images/fieldset_grey_710_mid_bg.gif) should be in there, I believe.

Float that "Register Now" button along with the meta data below it to the right on the
attention-grabber.

- I'd also suggest having 5 different medical-oriented images much like that female
doctor randomize. Gives it the feel like there is constant activity, even when there isn't.

Well, sir. It certainly is an improvement. I like it. Kudos!

How long has it taken you to develop this? I was going to develop a medical site (different concept, however),
but I can't seem to get time to really start diving into PHP more. I'm currently coding a bunch of C++
apps -- blah.

Minor cosmetic changes can wait until all the coding issues are resolved.

Development of the original (c2003) site took about a weekend. At that point, the site was little more than basic (and ugly) HTML that did little more than spit out the database. Upgrading it to the site you've all been using for the last five years probably took another two or three days of graphic reskinning, and then a few days here and there worth of work to add new search options, the comments section, and some administrative reporting tidbits.

This new version will end up having been ~450 hours worth of work, between the information design and wireframes (me), the graphic design (not me), and the programming (not me). Judging by this experience, and the way Adsense revenues nosedived, don't expect matchapplicants to get a refresh anytime soon. 😉 It's going to be several years until the advertising pays off the redesign - and my resident salary doesn't have any further leeway for funding side projects. At least I can deduct the capital investment against my taxes....

i'll be honest. i dont like the homepage. it looks like one of those websites where you typed in the address wrong and is just a fake site.

looks really fake/cheesy

Why use adsense? The impression rates are garbage. Go direct if you are planning on having that site mean anything.

Certainly, ideal monetization for web properties results from selling your adspace directly.

Of course, this website is a hobby I fund with my extra income from my career in medicine - trying to help pre-medical students, not profit off them. In residency, it's a lot simpler to sign up for AdSense, and just receive a check in the mail every week that covers hosting.

Thank you for your advice on website development.
- 500k visitors is an interesting target considering there are only 50k students applying to medical school every year.
- My average length of visit is much greater than one minute.
- My second and third largest visitor loyalty segments from the last month were the 26-50 times and 51-100 times visitors.
- I do make greater than $1 a day from AdSense.
But your evaluation of my site was an otherwise strong effort.

I am sure there are better ways to run my site as a business, but, if you looked closely at my site, you might notice it's been operating since 2003 as a service to premedical students; it had no ads whatsoever on it for its first three years of operation. I am content to simply let it continue to evolve in an attempt to meet the needs of the community, rather than monetize it.
