OK. So what med schools take in relatively large numbers of OOS applicants?

Private med schools do...

In terms of public/state schools, I know that Michigan State CHM took only 63% in-state last year (although that was lower than average for that school), OHSU takes about 70% in-state, Vermont also takes a lot of out of state, maybe up to half, but it's unclear to me how much of the OOS people are people from other New England states. I'm sure others can add to this list. Or you could try searching the forum since this question has likely been asked hundreds of times.

a lot of the NY schools are OOS friendly.. as well as a couple of the Illinois schools. .

Lately OHSU has been more like 45-50% instate and the rest OUT of state. Makes it harder for instate to benefit, so I moved to SC. Now, as far as OOS, SC is pretty insular, almost entirely instate or prove you have strong ties to the area...but I'm a state resident now for the past 2 yr so I think I'm OK.

Texas schools are nice. They'll interview you and string you along, then not accept you...but they're very nice about it all 🙁

I don't know about those OHSU stats. I just interviewed there and they told us that 70% of their students are IS. While I am OOS, most of the people interviewing with me were IS. They said that IS students are much more likely to receive an interview, but that after that it is an even playing field.

I have to agree with my boy Zissou. I am OOS and I received two interviews from NY. Granted I am from New York #2 (South Florida), I think New York is friendly to all states. Good luck!

UVM is very OOS friendly (but expensive). I would guess that about 60% of my class is OOS. There is a special access program for Maine residents, but no other offical regional preferance. The school does accept a large number of Californians; apparently people used to call the place UC Burlington.

Good luck

As far as public schools go, it seems Ohio State, Cincinnati, some of the SUNYs, and VCU are among the most friendly to OOS students.

I would avoid the Florida schools (w/ the exception of Miami) like the plague though...Also applicable to public Cali/Texas schools

bumping this. does anyone know if university of maryland is friendly to out of staters?

Univ of Wisconsin has quite a few people from California

MCW has half of its class from OOS.

Mayo and WashU don't give much preference to IS vs OOS.

I heard UVermont is also OOS Friendly but I didn't apply there.

Check out the spreadsheet in this thread for a bunch of IS/OOS data for the schools (plus a lot more). It's the school selector from this past app cycle.. definitely helped me along in choosing schools. There's info on how to use the spreadsheet in the first post of the thread. Good luck boys and girls. 👍

yeah I heard Maryland is pretty friendly to OOS. I also heard the same for Michigan. Michigan is apparently friendly to California kids.

I have barely any ties to Maryland.... I found out after my interview that I have an aunt who lives in Baltimore, and during the whole interview I mentioned that my sister lives in Virginia, and I got in, so I would say yes. At my interview day, 6/10 people were OOS... Good luck!

A lot of states are nice to Cali kids, since they know that there are not enough medical schools in Cali to help all 8000 Cali premeds who apply every year...

yea i was going to say uva, michigan, and maryland.

Where I'm from...University of Kansas isn't very friendly to OOS, but they'll accept a few here & there ~14% (?). My state wants to keep doctors in this state, especially in suburban areas. Too many graduate and leave for big cities. Ah well...I hear Creighton and St. Louis are nice to OOS apps

Ohio State, Cinci and Toledo all have good OOS acceptance rates (40% or so) and decent class sizes that make it worth a shot. Also, the public schools in ohio (at least those 3) let you have in state tuition after the first year if you establish residency (easy to do).

UCLA is the only UC that has no preference for in-staters.

I wouldnt say that these schools are specifically nice to CA premeds, but rather that there are so many well qualified CA applicants, like us, that end up having to apply and go to nonCA state schools because of the UCs' selectivity. I know CA ppl that ended up going to top tier state med schools like Baylor(pseudo?) and UTSW, but didnt even recieve invites from any UCs.

For OOS applicants, I think it varies based upon state of residency, possible ties to state, and other factors(research/race). In general, I think OH is probably the best state for OOS. Here is a list of OOS friendly schools that I thought of. Please add/edit if I am wrong.

State Schools:
Uni of Vermont
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Downstate
Uni of Wisconsin
UTSW
Ohio State
Uni of Cinn
Uni of Alabama
Baylor(is it pseudo state?)
VCU(is it public?)
USF
MCW
MSU
UIC
OHSU(esp if URM)
Rochester(state/public?)
Uni Washington(if URM, heavy research, or WWAMI)
Uni Minnesota(if URM)
Penn State
UCLA(best UC for OOS)
UCSD(debatable, but from looking on SDN, it seems like they have interviewed a decent number(for UC standards) of OOS applicants)
