Medicaid at its best...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think some of you guys need to come live with me for a little while.

Then you could actually see what LIFE is about for MOST of the people in the US.

Believe it or not, there are a ton of people who work like dogs, day in, day out. They have a car, a roof over their head, and food on the table. They take care of their bills. But, they are on the edge. A catastrophic incident can mean the difference between life and death. Literally. Medicaid is a godsend for those people.

For that matter, as I consider my mother, who is in a nursing home, I consider Medicare/Medicaid a godsend. There is no way I could pay over $4000 monthly for her care. She has a long term disability policy, thank goodness. But, it will run out soon. So, we will be going "on the dole" for her care.

Sure, I could take care of Mom at home. Except, then I would not have a home. I would have to quit working to take care of her, as she requires 24/7 care. (She has had a stroke, and Alzheimer's)

There are tons of people living on the edge of poverty. If one person loses their job, it just doesn't mean cutting back on a few things. It can mean the difference between a roof and a car roof between you and the rain.

Stop and think about it for a while....

like i said, anyone who is a productive member of soceity, who works, but needs help to get over the edge and stay there, im ok with

but its those lazy bums who sit all day (as they are addicted to pain pills) at home i have a problem with

You mean like eating fast food? Drinking alcohol? Smoking? Where do you limit it? What is the threshold of "we will treat you for your MI" vs. "sorry duder you smoked a couple weeks ago time to writhe around on the floor in extreme pain"?

There's definitely a way we can better factor in prevention in our health-care system, I won't disagree with that. But it is much, much more complicated than taking someone's Medicaid away because they like to have a few beers every now and then. Or smoke a cigar every few weeks. FORTLIVINGROOM's point is that Medicine doesn't hold patients accountable for their bad choices, and my point is that there really is no way to do that other than if you're a complete sociopath. But we definitely need to do a better job at preventing things than we currently are.

For everyone else whining that patients are stupid and abuse their bodies: yeah, it's ****ing annoying and terrible at the same time. But people in general are stupid, ourselves included. What could we possibly do to change that? There really isn't a whole lot. But not going into health-care would have been a good idea if patient stupidity gets to you so much.

i would say most of my patients ( i work in a 90% medicaid store) are a pack a day smokers....and im not the only one, private insurance charges you different premium if you check that "smoker" box on the form...so its same concept here, if u smoke, sorry cant have it (or maybe have it with some preconditions)

There are so many twists and turns to this thread...

Keep the name calling to a minimum - there is nothing wrong with discussing the pros/cons of Medicaid - but the bashing of opposing viewpoints is hardly productive.

Remember - It's a forum - You wont be converting beliefs here...

I never said "children and mentally challenged children" or for that matter people who require 24/7 care should not get the care they need. Im merely stating that there is a lot of waste with the medicaid program. I see it everyday, mom brings in 5 to 6 cards for the kids. I mean come on, at some point one must think "ok i have 2 kids and thats all we can have and afford". I get pissed at waste because it truly take away money from the people whi truly need it. The state starts to cut back programs. I have a friend who has a mentally challenged brother and they are cutting a lot of aide to him. It eats me up inside to see his aide cut and see these other people just soak up the aide. That is all that irks me...

I'm attributing the "stop procreating" part to you and the other to CB. And yes, you are correct in that I meant it sarcastically!!

I honestly don't have the answers on how to prevent waste and fraud in the welfare system. As you have seen, there are those who use it because they truly need it and there are those who abuse the system. How do we prevent waste and fraud? I don't know. I would agree that some sort of universal "safety net" needs to be in place because it is quite obvious that a lot of Americans (rich and poor alike) are one medical/economic event away from disaster. Am I advocating socialism? No. It just makes no sense to me to argue about who deserves what. Let's change the whole insurance system so that everybody gets a shot at living to their full potential. The times demand it.

They should just require licenses to procreate, right? And only smart people should, right? This sounds like a great idea!

Huh? Procreation Licensing. That's a dumb idea. Sounds like slickly-packaged eugenics to me.

I think somebody's trying to start a new fight...

Besides, everybody knows smart people are ugly and don't get laid anyway;)

(That last statement was a joke, people)
