So I hear a lot of talk on here about medical schools that require specific kinds of laptops or even one purchased through them, but I've never seen anyone give specific examples. Lets get a sort of list going so everyone will have something to refer to. I know it would be a deciding factor for me because I want a mac because I'm so sick of PCs...

So yeah if you know a school does or doesn't - add it below - along with the type they require if you know...

Awesome! Thanks guys - I'll try to remember to ask about this at my interviews, and maybe everyone else can too. If we get a pretty substantial list it would probably be a pretty good resource for people.

with regard to schools that put one in your tuition - you get no choice, you have to buy it whether you need one or not and they make a killing off you being that you HAVE to buy it.

specifically TCOM charging $2000 for a gateway that you can buy online for $750

I know they put some software on it, but personally I have all the software I need already, OS, Productivity you name it. And taking the University of TExas system as example, your XP, Office cost less than $10 a disk when you're a student there.

Brown requires a PDA.

I think the laptop deal is a joke. That's what school lab computers and free time are for. Give us some freedom.

These stringent requirements, particularly when chosen by people lacking any IT experience or with some quirky idiosyncratic preference, have no place in higher education. Unless it's the military or some highly-specialized computer science institution.

Shoot, I love my mac laptop. I don't want to cross over to the dark side b/c UVM decides I need a Dell piece of crap. I guess I have to get into UVM before this really becomes an issue though....

Lenovo requirement is pretty nice, especially if you get to use the X41 tablet.

UTHSCSA (San Antonio): I asked on my interview/tour if they had recommendations and the answer was, "computer? what for? you WILL need to get a PDA by your 3rd year though"

is there an advantage to actually getting a laptop over a desktop? i used a desktop throughout college, and either did my studying in my room, or w/ books/notebooks in the study lounge.
unless a school requires a laptop, would a desktop be better? i don't want to get a laptop that i end up keeping in one place anyway. or is there some reason to lug around a laptop that i'm not thinking of?

I think some people can manage with a desktop, but if your school requires that you have the laptop than you need it.

That being said...I LOVE my laptop. I could use it to review powerpoints and save paper. I also never had to worry anymore in college and my masters where I was when I tried to write a paper. If I needed to go home for thanksgiving, I just put my 12.1 inch widescreen in my backpack and was on my way with EVERYTHING I needed.

A lot of schools are podcasting lectures and listening to lectures online...and it's really helpful to have a laptop when you are anywhere. Depending on how close you live to school it may not be convenient to go home and study. I guess you just have to consider that even tho one thing worked in college...med school is hard and is a lot about time management. Things like a laptop can really help with that.

plus, if the room next to you suddenly get occupied by a tecnho fan with enourmous bass speakers and an abnormal sleep schedule, you'll appreciate the portability... (personal experience)

why is ucla under the "specific" computer category when they just require a pc?

Thats specific - it means you can't get a mac. They're specifying the type of computer you can get - which is what this thread is about.

The other category is that they don't care at all. UCLA does care. They don't care what PC but it has to be a PC.

Actually you can use a mac there, you just need to get their bruin device setup card to configure it for the necessary programs..
