IMO, legalizing it will not only NOT have catastrophic effects (except to those ultra-conservative types:idea:), but will provide many dollars that the government can utilize, and not take from our pockets.

Marijuana, unlike alcohol, has never been proven to cause violent/destructive behavior. Compared to legal drugs like Alcohol and tobacco, the health effects are almost laughable.

Honestly, I'm shocked to find people, who aren't trolls, trying to argue that cannabis shouldn't be legal, and I'm even more shocked to hear someone say all drugs should be legal. Maybe this is just a troll thread.. X_X;

Check out the Journal ... flip through the pages and look who's providing this stuff. So do physicians prescribe this or just give a letter that it's recommended? How does the DEA keep track? You're joking, right? And to think, you're supposedly working to be a doctor in this country...wow... I'm a legal "stoner" from nevada. I work 7 days straight, 10 hour shifts with a 2 hour busride each way. I also work safely, never having had any lost time accidents or incidents...period. As if it's any of your damn business to begin with, I was in a car accident when I was a child, and smoking weed helps me deal with some details of that... for you to call me a "stoner" and how I'm a non-contributing member of society (especially considering I paid over 35K in taxes last year...remember that NV doesn't have state taxes either...do the math) is total b.s., and completely ignorant. Also... I served in the United States Army honorably for more time than you've been in college. Kiss my pot-head ass.

i didn't say the USERS do the crimes, but the DRUG causes the crimes. the drug trade. i see it every day. i have friends that work in it, every day. they are the ones who go head to head daily with dealers and smugglers. they put their lives on the line. they don't think legalizing it will make a bit of difference in the trade, because the black market will always be cheaper and more efficient than anything uncle sam can put on the table. i see the stabbings, shootings, car accidents, etc. Yes, pot heads cause accidents. you say they all go 10mph, well maybe the ones you know. where i live we've had about 10 KIDS (high school age) all killed in MVA's in the last year--all smoking pot. and driving 10mph isn't safe anyways. that will cause accidents just as sure as somebody driving 100mph. i understand my viewpoint is considered unpopular and unenlightened. its "archaic." but its based on what i've seen, and what my friends who work daily in drug enforcement have seen. i think most of you who think pot is all about "creativity, peace, and love" get your opinions from mtv.

I respect the opinions of your law enforcement buddies. But, they're in the "thick of it". They see the horrors of the ILLEGAL TRADE.

As for prices being cheaper in the black market, well I don't see too many bootleggers these days from south of the border, or north for that matter smuggling in ETOH...... I'm sure if you make a hobby out of moonshining in your basement, you could pull a fast one on Jim Beam, but otherwise, come on.

I'm not saying the market economics are the same between alcohol and MJ, but it's pretty hard to compete with the quality, consistency, availability, and cost of a Budweiser....

I assure you that if pot were legalized and American farmers supplied the stuff, it would bring the "risk" factor (i.e. profit margins) out of the equation, and to the point where smugglers would look for something else to do. It wouldn't be worth their while any longer, as that risk (death, jail etc.) in the ILLEGAL trade requires fat margins for death and jail to be factored into a "legitimate" risk assessment.

I do draw the line on heroin and cocaine, however.

Because cocaine has legitimate medical uses. Not often, but occasionally it's used as a topical anesthetic for its vasoconstrictive effects, a property that's unique among local anesthetics.

I'm sure someone will be along to cite some nebulous, poorly defined, poorly tested benefit to inhaling the burnt vapors of "medical marijuana" for an unmeasured, variably absorbed dose of THC +/- a bunch of other compounds from one of 6,382,182 unstudied and unregulated strains of the plant, which was prepared, packaged, and sold in an inconsistent and non-reproducible manner ... but objective people can step back and recognize that there really is a fundamental difference between the two.

Yes I understand cocaine has legitimate use, I have seen it used to assess a young fellow who had been shot in the head.

My point is if marijuana were schedule 2 we could then do studies that would not be nebulous as you say.

Schedule I drugs can, in fact, be investigated in the United States - and other countries, for that matter.

Medicinal use of marijuana is ridiculous. There is no other FDA approved drug - not one - that is prescribed to be used by rolling it up in paper, burning it, and inhaling the smoke. The very notion of such an imprecise delivery method for a drug that has undergone no quality control process during its manufacture is just absurd.

I know lots of people smoke it and feel better. Some of them have chronic pain, and it helps. I'm happy for them. I want it legalized along with every other illicit drug.

What I don't want are people pretending it's a medicine, because it isn't a "medicine" any more than tea made from ground up tiger penis is a "medicine" ...

let me ask you something. if marijuana is made legal in the USA, will fewer or more people use it? will that be good or bad for the USA? its all guessing because the truth is nobody knows. but there are lots of very non-"naive" and in fact, expert opinions out there that believe it will have bad consequences for our great nation. so maybe its not so cut and dry like you would like to believe.

i freely admit i don't know what would happen if we made mj legal. but my EXPERIENCE, and the EXPERIENCES of my friends who work with it EVER DAMN DAY says that we should continue to try to keep drugs off the streets.

Listen guys.... this thread can go on and on about whether or not pot should be legalized.... everyone has good valid points. There is one thing that I think most docs/med students should agree on and that is that marijuana should not be classified as a schedule I narcotic. Its up there with heroin as having the same addicition potential... thats bs and everyone knows that! Im even going to say that I think cocaine is a schedule II narcotic meaning that it has "less potential" for addicition than marijuana... WTF??? gimme a break. I think that the US legal system is fudged here. I believe that if your a responsible adult who wants to toke up in the privacy of your own home and not drive or operate heavy machinery etc then you shouldn't be messed with. Marijuana is not addictive... you dont here people asking to let them suck your D^^^ for pot. Jails are filling up and costing tax payers loads of money... not even counting the money we spend on the drug war. I think that pot should be decriminalized period. I agree that marijuana has potential to be a "gateway drug" for children... this can be avoided by simply getting to know your children a little more and raising them smart by talking to them about drugs. But you cannot have pot as a schedule I narcotic and then throw hydrocodone and xanax under schedule III... gimme a f**king break

I have stoner friends who wake up every morning and run 12-13 miles training for marathons. They are people who work, pay their taxes, and have raised beauitful families. They aren't on the streets selling to kids or out on weekends doing cocaine while drinking and driving... these are model citizens.

I think it's maybe the most absolutely tom foolery by the feds that herb is illegal. we're all chumps being played for believing their crap for so long lol. I remember being in fourth grade at a christian private school, totally innocent, and hearing teachers talk to us about pot. They made it seem like the worst scourge on society in the history of western civilization, right up with the nazis and Atilla the Hun. Well little science nerd, encyclopedia-reading fourth grade me decided to look up some information about what they were saying, and guess what? I found out it was all bull****. and that was the first time I realized that many people in authority don't know jack **** and as an open-minded, informed citizen it is a *responsibility* to use accurate, evidence-based information to support truth.

Read about the history, why it was made illegal in the first place (racism + propaganda), the LD of the drug, side effects, the fact that it's a completely natural plant... every day in the states patients are given medications by HCPs that do more damage to their bodies than herb ever could. it's a 100% non-toxic plant; legalize it, tax it, make $$$$ for the feds, fix my roads, pay the army, balance whatever budget problems the million accountants in washington have problems with, and stop spreading lies to kids based on century old racist propaganda.

pgg, what about Marinol (dronabinol)? When I was a med. student in peds, I saw one of the residents write for this for a cancer patient. I believe it comes PO. It is a derivative of marijuana. It seemed to help a little, but wasn't as dramatic as I expected.
