Meharry waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just spoke with Mr. Mosley,

He informed me that the class is full and not to expect much waitlist movement until May 15th.

Thanks for the update. It's strange, I talked to Ms. Davis last week and she said that I should just be patient ( I haven't heard anything yet) as I am just in a "transition" position???

We'll see.

Great!!!! Nothing is freaking working out!!

I just called today, they took my name and my contact info and said that they will get back to me

did they get back to you?

NO they haven't. I am seriously losing my patience. I called them today again. Ms. Davis got my contact info again and said that they will call me but doesn't know when!!! What really worries me is that classes start in June and I still don't even know if I'm rejected or waitlisted!!! I really hope that I find out by the end of this week.

Yahabibi..when did you have your interview at Meharry. I think I might know you!!!

Hey Ruck if You want to chat PM me I would be happy to talk..

I wonder if they will have much waitlist movement this year. Seems like they over over interviewed this year to fill all there spots.

Sigh......

Called yesterday and was told to "sit tight"..

I was surprised to see this thread on Meharry. When I applied to med schools last year I was told that the quality of the Meharry program was not quite as good as most other options, particularly those in TN. Thus, I choose not to apply to Meharry. Can anyone who has been there/is there comment on this? How do the program/facilities/professors stack up to other schools you've visited? Perhaps an objective way to look at that would be to answer the question "if you were accepted at Meharry and UT which would you choose?" or "what would be your absolutely last choice of schools (excluding Caribbean)?" I realize this is all rather subjective, but it's not like schools get an A,B,C, or D rating in the MSAR. All I can gain from that book is that my stats are above the means. Thanks.

i feel like they are just stringing me along until may 15th so that they know if i got into other schools, and if i did, they will waitlist me or reject me. i interviewed back in march also, and its been 8 weeks now and still no response, even though i called and e-mailed both ms davis and mr mosley. ....
im going to shoot someone if i dont get a response from them soon!!!

hi there,

I am a first year medical student @ Meharry 😍 😍. I personally was accepted last June, which was well beyond what was considered the norm. I intereveiewd last February 24th. Interestingly, some of my classmates (roughly 3-4) were accepted within 1-2 weeks even after our program began (on June 20th). Don't ever give up hope 🙂

If you truly want to attend Meharry, I STRONGLY urge you to contact Mr. Mosley. I wish you all the best 🙂

If you need any advice/help, please don't hesitate to send me a PM 🙂

When you say to contact Mr. Mosley, what should I contact him about. I have already spoken to Ms. Davis and made it clear that I am very much looking forward to finding out about my status.

What else should I do?

Thanks

Hes been pretty cool. He told me they really liked me (even though I was placed in the acceptance range). Sometimes, I wonder if he says that to everyone. Then he gave me a bunch of things to do and send to him.

Question,

Whta did he want you to do and send to him?

Curious and hopeful! 🙂

Hey Vitriol,
I feel your anguish. I, too, have contacted mr. mosley and mrs. davis to only hear that I should receive an email this week or next week. Glued to the computer I find myself languishing to have some sort of feedback when none is being provided. Oh well, let's hope for the best in these ensuing weeks

Hi all,

This is my first time posting, but I have looked at this website for about a year now. I just have to say something regarding Meharry. This place has left a very bad taste in my mouth, not the school, but the administration and staff, especially those who are there to inform you of admission or rejection. I don't know if that is Mr. Mosely's job, or someone elses. Anyway...I was put on the waitlist, called, wrote emails, got the run around just like everyone else. May 15th came and went, June 20th came and went, August came and went, nothing!!! I didn't even get a letter in the mail, not even an email telling me I wasnt accepted. I don't know what goes on over there, but it is very unprofessional, at best, more rude than anything. I never really vented, so there it is, I still don't feel any better. I don't mean to discourage anyone, good luck all.

Unfortunately no one responded to my post. What did you think of school when you were there? Do you have any other schools to compare it to? Thanks.

Everyone there seemed happy to be there, and the experience you get while there (I hear) is good, because when you are at Metro General, there aren't that many residents there, so third and fourth year students get to see, and help a lot more than in other shcools. The facilities there aren't in the greatest of shape, and the neighborhood Meharry is in is a low income area. But that is why Meharry is there, to serve the underserved. The school doesn't really compare to others, since others I am familiar with have much more funding and research doctors that bring in lots of NIH grants. It would not be my first pic, but since I don't have stellar scores like most people on this site, beggars can't be choosers. Oh, to answer your question, If I was accepted at UT or ETSU and Meharry, it would be a no brainer, and it wouldn't be Meharry. Not to trash that school or anything, it is important to Tennessee and surrounding areas, but the opportunities at other schools outweigh the ones at Meharry, that is partially subjective, but I think most would agree.

Did you interview at those places?

I personally was very impressed with the school. People need to look past the cosmetics and realize the positive aspects the school can give to a student. I loved my interviewers. They were so nice and they really made me felt comfortable. They talk about a family atmoshere and it is not just talk. They follow through with it. You say they don't have all the research grants. Well thats because their main mission is to provide PCP's to the underserved. Maybe if more schools had missions like Meharry there wouldn't be as many people in the underserved populations struggling for proper health care.

If you reread my previous post, not just skim, but read it, I am pretty much saying the exact same thing you are. I said, "the school doesn't really compare to others" because, like you said, their mission is totally different than everyone elses, and the effect...they don't have grants and NIH funding. Is that bad, no! Would Meharry do a lot more if they had grants and NIH funding, you bet they would, and the healthcare of Nashville and TN would improve because of it. All I am saying is that with money, you can offer a whole lot more to the student as well as the area in which it serves. That is just the way things work unfortunately. Does that mean that Meharry isn't a good school? No. When I said the facilities aren't in the greatest of shape, and that it is in a low income neighborhood, that is a fact. I have been to other schools, UT and Vandy. And what I am saying is fact. The guy asked which I preferred, and I told him which "I" preferred, that is why I said "partially subjective, " I guess you could argue totally subjective. If I offend you with my statements, I apologize, but I am trying to be as objective as I can. And I agree totally with your post. If you haven't got in, I hope you do! And not the runaround I got, you have to admit, that was very unprofessional that I didn't hear anything!

Well JJP, I think its safe to say you didnt get accepted and if you did, you got a lot of catching up to do as the years is almost over. For the rest of you, I wasnt accepted until early June (about 2 weeks b4 Maps began) so the best thing to do is to continue showing your interest, relax, thank god for life and let the chips fall as they may, and in this case...when they may. Best of luck!!!

Regards,
Blair MS I almost II !!!!!!!
P.S. tired of student doctor.net haters always "discussing" things they have no idea about. blah 😴

One more thing, as far as your "no brainer" I have classmates who turned down acceptances to ALL of the other TN Med Schools you listed as well as other schools (top 15) across the country to come to Meharry. I just dont want the others to be discouraged by this nonsense. Back to studying...

What do I have no idea about? You got accepted, that's great for you. I wish you well! And if you hadn't, and you didn't hear anything as well, and you tried contacting them and they would never return your phone calls or emails, you would be all fine and dandy? You need to learn a little yourself, its called empathy. Something you might need in the future for someone in your situation. I thank God everyday that I am alive, and I believe everything happens for a reason, and He puts people where they are meant to be. Don't lecture me on something you have no idea about, or choose not to understand. Best of luck!

I can say whatever I want to say, he was asking other people's opinion, I gave mine, you, Blair, are free to give your opinion about the school. You don't have to insult my opinion, I welcome your opinions, and I never discouraged anyone from this school, its a great school, as my previous post suggests.

There usually, for the most part, is some movement on the waitlist. I believe I heard the same thing last year around this time, and there was waitlist movement. You know what, I think someone posted the exact same message last year about the class was full and the waitlist wasn't expected to move, but it did. BlessedMD got accepted two weeks before MAPS, so don't get your head down. And I remember reading about someone else that was accepted after MAPS. So you really can never be for sure. Good luck!

Please lets be open minded. We are matured enough to be very objective.

Okay,

So I just emailed Mr. Mosley saying that I was waitlisted and that MMC was my first choice med school, etc.

I also thanked his office staff for their help.

I didn't know what else to say and I know that I should be sending signals that I am interested.

Has anyone else done this? 😛

Thanks man. In retrospect, I took some of these comments on the boards to the heart to much. I forget to realize that every school has waitlist movement. If you ask me, theres gotta be a good amount of movement at a school like Meharry. Lets face it...a lot of people don't want to go there and that is cool. I for one do. 🙂

Also...that message said Mr. Mosely doesn't expect movement till the May 15 which he said there will be.

JJP do you have unfinished business with Blair or something? Do you guys know each other? If not, dude, I'm sure he did not know how he sounds! And I wish you all the best, and I have read your posts, and you are disscussing lots of different viewpoints in a pretty well-rounded and fair way. And, I totally feel for how you got no word back. I'm currently waiting on a decision and that would be incredibly painful to never hear back. So, given that you suffered that kind of pain, I'm more impressed that you speak of the school with a fair amount of respect - saying that it's a unique school, you like its mandate, but the admin is painful, etc.

Thank you for that comment. No, I don't know BlessedMD. Some people just don't fully read the posts and get the clear picture of the post. He is probably studying for finals and just a little stressed and brain fried from reading all day, I can understand. I think he is just protecting Meharry, which is honorable, and is expected, but I think you can over do it just a little bit. I, too, take things the wrong way, and may say things I regret later, no ones perfect. Its done with, now back to the main point of the post: I wish everyone the best and hope a lot decide to go somewhere else so some of you on the "acceptance range" can actually be accepted.

Good luck all!

JJP - how is this year going for med school? Did you apply this year? To Meharry? I wish you the best in your travels. And hey, your posts have been awesome, so thanks for being inspired to sign on, eh?

If Meharry will give me a medical degree I would take it. I even want to work in an underserved community and help those less fortunate. I really do. I like the meharry philosophy but I think the Meharry alternate list and admissions staff genuinely don't care about most applicants. You can show them that you care and would fly to the moon for them and they will not budge. The are looking for "specific qualities" which students must have. If you don't have these "specific qualities" you'll make the alternate list so they feel better and you feel better about not getting rejected. THey won't reject you, they will just make it more painful, put you on the alternate list and tie you up on the back of their truck and drag you until school starts all to say.. Ohh sorry our class is fully. Meharry needs to get more organized.... I have nothing against meharry and I think it is a wonderful school. But I think some care and concern needs to be shown to the applicants....

Best to all you on meharry wait list.... My 2 cents

I applied this year to TN schools, but didn't get everything in until September. Partly due to the fact I was waiting on Meharry, but thats another story, mostly just bummed out, and they changed the format for AMCAS, so I had to re-enter everything again, that sucked. I got secondaries from the TN schools, (i didn't apply to Vandy) and no interviews. I guess Meharry made up their mind they didn't want me, I didn't even get an interview this year, and got one last year. I don't know? I haven't really thought about it, but I didn't even hear anything back from them after I turned in their secondary!! Not even a flat out rejection. And that was in Nov/Dec I think. The others I got a quick response from after secondaries, and it was a polite letter. Either the support staff is very disorganized, or they just don't care, or lazy,or both. So, I retook the MCAT this April so we'll see how that turned out in a month. Thanks for the encouragement!

The thing is Dr. Nash...They are not looking for someone who just wants a medical degree. I am not trashing you at all. They want someone who REALLY wants to go there.

At least most people know something about their status. I still don't know if I am rejected/waitlisted (I don't know about acceptance; it seems like nobody is accepted right away). So do you guys think Monday, May 15th is the day???

I interviewed on May 4 and haven't heard back yet. Is anyone else in the same position? For those who have heard back, is it via snail mail?

Yea, it doesn't seem like many people are accepted right away but Mr. Mosely told someone the class is full. Now, the only thing I could think about that is he wants people to show interest. So for all we know, there could be 20 spots open and they go to those who have shown they want it. A stretch.....but what else do we have in this process? 🙂

I interviewed in April and have not heard a thing.
I will try to contact them this coming week.

ruck, gagirl, hopefaith, shailen, others:

I'm waiting on the decision from my app/interview too. i interviewed the week of april 24th.

Did anyone receive word today? If you did, don't be shy, post that you heard something, and when you interviewed. As a public service announcement! Don't even have to post what you heard, just that you you heard!

Yes, please let us all know.

i inteviewed in march, still havent heard anything. there is no point in even calling them, i called to ask if a recommendation letter was added and they said "we cant tell you any information on the phone" wtf?!!!?

it seems like a two bit operation, i dont know if id go there even if its the only school. makes me think that eventually they will get discredited

In defense of Meharry, all I have run in to were nice and very patient people working there.

They have all been helpful to me. Right now they are overloaded and they have graduation on Saturday, so be patient.

I am not saying anything about the people there. You are very right, everyone was EXTREMELY friendly, and that is what i liked about the school and it is why i am still waiting to hear back from them. I am just put off by the fact that they have had my file for at least 8 weeks now, and they wont even tell me if its in committee or anything. this is basic information that i can get from every other medical school that i have applied to, in a timely manner.

i just dont understand why they would hand out cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses and then not respond to either. I would have been happier if they had not done so, saving me the frustration wiht the lack of response.

at this point in the admissions process, we are all really frustrated with waitlists and to have a school not even tell me if a letter of recommendation has been recieved is, imho, ridiculous, no disrespect.

I was interviewed sometime March or late feb (dont remember). Anyways, I just received a waitlist letter.

Does anyone know if Meharry sends rejections? It said in my letter indirectly that I should be fortunate to be in this spot. If there are no rejections, how is this any different from getting an interview spot?
