Hey everyone! I'm 95% sure that I'll be attending Michigan next year for HMP, and I was hoping that other people planning on attending Michigan could post in here and get to know each other.

I'm also an undergrad at Michigan right now, so if you have any questions about the campus or Ann Arbor in general, feel free to ask. 🙂

I am probably going there as well for HBHE. I have decided not to interview for HMP as I've decided it's not what I want to do.

I'm an undergrad at your in-state rival and I'm from the AA-area.

I'm not an extremely huge fan of the program but it's in my top 5 and I can't beat the rep or the in-state tuition 😀

I'm almost certain that I will be attending Michigan next year. I was accepted into the HMP department a bit over two weeks ago and I will be pursing a MHSA. I'm coming straight out of undergrad so I think I'll be among the youngest of the class.

I'm interested in moving to Ann Arbor this summer and working until school starts in August. Do you think it'll be easy to find a good temporary job? I have no clue where to start looking.

I am 90% sure I am attending U-M for HBHE and Social Work dual degree. And if you have any questions, like honeybadger stated, hit me up as well. I am an undergrad at UM too. 🙂

Hey everyone, congrats on getting in!

Did you guys hear back from any potential scholarships? I've been accepted into UMichigan HBHE, but unfortunately, I'm out-of-state and am really hoping for some scholarships to make it easier to attend 🙁

I'm straight out of undergrad too, so you won't be alone in that! It seems like there's a good balance of younger people and older people. There's a good student employment website to find jobs (https://www.studentemployment.umich.edu), and I think that a lot of the local restaurants and stores hire a lot in the summer so you should be fine.

Hi 🙂

I have my visit day next week and I am very nervous. Would any of you be able to tell me about your experience and what I should expect? Any tips or advice? Thank you very much! I hope I get to join you at UofM! 🙂

Thanks for the link! Most opportunities seems to pay $8-$12/hour which I'm not sure that I can live off. Hopefully I can find a job that pays at least $15/hour!

Be yourself! The whole experience is pretty casual and extremely welcoming. Have plenty of questions ready and be prepared to answer the standard interview questions. Most importantly, have fun. Feel free to message me if you have any more concerns.

Still waiting to hear from a few schools but I'm pretty confident I'll enroll at Michigan for Epi. Grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from a football rival last May.

I really don't think that's the point of those student jobs (i.e. earning a salary to live off of). I think it's really for experience and the opportunity to make some side cash.

I know it's early in the admissions process but someone should make a facebook group for admitted students!

I was really nervous for mine too! I'm not sure if you've had it yet, but here's some advice anyways. It is casual in the sense that everyone is friendly, but also be aware that it's a very formal event, so make sure to dress professionally (wear a suit), be on time, etc. Most of the day is just talking with the current students. I think we had like 3 different sessions that were all titled "Q and A", haha. So that's pretty simple- just have a conversation with a few of them and get their business cards. You also get to sit in on a class, which could be interesting, but mine was a little boring because I really had no idea what was being taught since we were just thrown into it. Everyone's interviews are at different times, so you could have one right away in the morning or later in the day. They last about 45 minutes and are pretty casual in general, but they do ask a few tough ones, such as "what should I tell the admissions committee about why you should be admitted?" Overall though, just stay relaxed and you'll be fine. Feel free to pm me with more questions. 🙂

Anyone else get a USB thumb drive loaded with program info in the mail yesterday?

I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet. Worth parsing through?

Eh... to be honest, there wasn't anything there other than a 1 minute welcome video (generic) that couldn't be found on the site.

I thought it was kind of useless tbh if you've already scanned the website a bit.

Any international student whose got an admit? did any one of you'll receive any kind of scholarship or Aid?

I have got my acceptance in Epidemiology MPH, but no scholarship 🙁(

hi,
I had a visit day on Feb 11 and still waiting for the final decision..
It seems like it should take 2 weeks at most so.. should I give up at this time or wait more? 🙁

Mine took a little over a week. Hard to tell if your delay means anything at all. It wouldn't surprise me if it is filling up as we head into March. Not sure

Whts the procedure for admission ? Do you get an email sayin your admitted or is there an interview before that?

You are offered an interview depending on your application. If offered an interview, you go and have a visit day at the school. Then, you wait from one week to two weeks and you find out whether you got in or not. Hope that helps 🙂 🙂

Hi all! I am 95% sure I will be attending UMich next year for HMP (policy), just got accepted today!! So excited as this since this is such a great program and I loved visiting it 🙂

I'm from the Northern Virginia/DC area, graduated from the University of Virginia '12 with a double major in Biology and Foreign Affairs and have been working around my university for my gap year this past year. I'm particularly interested in global health (developing areas), health inequality issues, and urban health. Anyone get into the Global Health Program on here??

🙂

Once admitted can you change your course from HMP to MHSA or choose dual degree within SPH for e.g choose MHSA and MPH in epi ? or do you have to mention it before your admitted?

i am not sure about the dual degree bit, but you can definitely switch between mph in management and policy and MHSA easily.

Hi! I was accepted into the HBHE program and I'm coming to Ann Arbor for the first time next week! Is anyone going to the March 15 student visit day? I'll be coming in from California and I'm not sure how to get from the airport to campus/the hotel they recommended.

Also, what is everyone wearing? Are girls wearing business casual (slacks, nice top, blazer)?

I'll be there for HBHE, too! I think I'm just going to take a cab to the hotel (on the way back, I think there are some shuttles that run from somewhere in downtown Ann Arbor but my flight gets in kind of late on Thursday and I want to just get to the hotel). So excited! Oh, and no idea about what to wear...any thoughts?

Where did they advise you all to stay? I'm from AA so I just ignored that part. Depending on when you arrive Thursday, I'd suggest taking the Michigan Flyer from DTW to Ann Arbor and a cab from there to your hotel. I'd imagine it being cheaper than a cab all the way. Just my two cents though.

YAY! I'm so excited too! I'll probably try taking the Michigan Flyer that was mentioned. I get in around 4:20 on Thursday so I'll probably go to the hotel and then explore. Did you already reserve a room? I just found out about the hotel today so I haven't reserved a room yet. I noticed they only have king beds available, though. Do you know how I could find someone to split a room with me?

As far as clothes go, I have no idea! I don't even have a warm coat! I'm not sure how casual or professional it will be so I was planning on being slightly overdressed than underdressed, but I'd like a second opinion! Right now I'm torn between black slacks, and a nice top or dark jeans a nice top and a blazer.

They advised us to stay at the Hampton? I guess they set up shuttle services between the campus and the hotel for us and they blocked off a group of rooms for all the visiting students so we get a discounted rate. Thanks for your advice about transportation! I'll definitely do that 🙂

Depending on the weather and your available free time, definitely walk around the downtown/central campus area. It's very easy to navigate and there's some cool shops and awesome restaurants. I know I'll be eating at Frita Batidos at least once during the weekend.

I've decided on Michigan.

But I refuse to say go blue... I'm green 😉

Does anyone have a schedule for admitted students day? I can't find it for the life of me though I know I've seen it before.

For anyone who got a scholarship (specifically a tuition discount scholarship), was it listed in your financial aid package?

Are you attending? What department are you in?

That's what I got too a while ago.

I sent an email asking if any extra funding was possible. They told us not to be afraid to do this at the Open House and I figured why not. Advisor said she'd see what she can do.

I'm going to U of M either way, but if I could go for a little less debt, that'd be awesome.

For those out of state why did you choose Michigan and over what schools?

No answer? Everyone is in state?

I'm in-state, but if it'll help, I can tell you why I chose it over going to a cheaper option (Columbia) and over my extremely strong desire to go to a warmer climate (Tulane or Emory).
