You do not need to buy or rent a microscope at UHS, nor does the school lend you one. Histo is done 100% on slides (PowerPoint and several other sources such as Histo CDs, internet sites, etc), so all the "slides" you will see will be on the computer. Path is done with the old "real" slides (carousel type) and with Slice of Life (a laser disc Pathology collection). Both Path and Histo courses had microscope checkouts. In Path you had to do several of them throughout the year, using one of their microscope and being observed by one of the TAs. You will use microscopes the most in Micro and the Micro lab is well equiped with microscopes.
So, absolutely no need to spend any extra money on a microscope, as you will have no use for it.
Maire,
Wait until you get to UHS to buy ANYTHING on the required book/equipment list. You won't need half of it, your big brother or sister will probably have tons of stuff to give you, and the various clubs on campus offer discounts on much of it. TALK to your big brother/sister especially before buying any books. Good luck and enjoy!!
