I am currently a freshman undergraduate, and I'm worried I may have just screwed myself over for future med school applications. Last weekend, I made the unfortunate choice to smoke pot with a couple kids I know, and we got caught by campus safety officers. I can honestly say I've used marijuana five times in my life, so I definitely don't have a drug habit of any kind. One of the kids I was with took responsibility for what was his and got a possession charge, but I got off without any legal trouble and just with a referral to the dean's office. Illegal drug use is against the schools code of conduct, so if I am found guilty of that there will be institutional action (probably a warning and drug education classes). I am still unsure if they have enough evidence to find me guilty because there was no blood test and no verbal admittance that I smoked. If I am found guilty, what kind of consequences does this hold when applying to med school? I've heard that alcohol violations aren't a big issue, but what about a drug use violation? your advice is appreciated.

Dude. You're in college, it's your time to screw up. Now cut it out and don't get anything else on your record. One puff of the Ganja is not the end of the world (but several violations will be). It's not uncommon, just keep your nose clean from here on out and you'll be fine.

just make sure to be smart and keep smart company. and by that, i am not saying "don't smoke anymore". i'm saying "don't smoke in places and with people that make it stupidly easy to get caught".

I would try to avoid lying as that is a very slippery slope. They probably have heard the story from your friend.

@704, are you talking about lying in the hearing done by the dean's office? I definitely won't risk lying, but I'm waiting to see what evidence they have against me and I may retain my right to remain silent if I don't want to incriminate myself in the hearing

One time may not sink you, if you touch the stuff ever again you are trying to prove you don't want to be a doctor......stop anything illegal and anything that can get you an institutional action.

Your next joint could cost you millions of dollars....

Agree that being honest is always the best policy. Take the drug education program offered you and keep out of trouble from here on out.

Read up on the student conduct rules at your school and the mechanisms for hearing accusations.

Do not make this your life "to show that you've grown". Someone I know IRL ended up doing research on pot, and lecturing kids on it and other stuff and the experience section of his application just kept reminding readers of the IA.

I've heard drug use is also big issue with medical licensure. Will they even be able to see this since it's not a criminal conviction and is simply disciplinary action by the school?

Yes, if they ask you I'm saying telling the truth would probably result in the best outcome.

Lucky for you this is one of the more benign IAs, and Adcoms were once young and stupid too.

But do it again and this will tell us that that you don't learn your lessons, and THAT will keep you out of medical school.

A single IA for smoking dope is not going to sink you.
A pattern of bad choices will.

Time to get drunk, streak naked in the streets, and reinterpret no as maybe and then yes! College is such a death trap for a responsible life. =/.

Dramatic, but this only works in the real world legal system, not some pseudo-judical school hearing.

Why not? I don't want to incriminate myself since I never admitted to smoking and wasn't in possession of anything.

You are not in a setting in which criminal charges are a potential outcome.
You are in a setting where being less than forthcoming can result in a more serious IA, though.

This is what I was getting at.

Do you really want your Dean to write on your transcript "We tried to get to the bottom of the charges, but jbo was evasive and non-cooperative."

??????

Because the burden of proof is not on the state nor school

You're gonna be okay.

Oven Obama and Clinton smoked weed.. okay well Clinton "didn't inhale" but still. If two Presidents smoked, I don't think one uncharged IA (if that) of smoking in your Freshman year is going to hurt you.

Just don't do it again.

...

or at least don't inhale.
