How does the military handle CME? Do they sponser you for confrences? How many confrences a year are we allowed to attend?

I get one conference per year. It does depend on how much money your command has for training, but they usually do a good job of getting docs to CME.

A lot of CME is online and free. Medscape is a pretty good source.

I get one conference a year (first year is boards.) You have to be a bit aggressive about it though. Most docs don't take the money.

I just want to correct the marketing by the recruiters. They like to advertise paid CME.

Here we are 3 months into the fiscal year and my department is out of money for CME. I was deployed so I missed out. Yet the hospital requires me to get 50 hours per year. I guess I'm on my own.

Not necessarily. If you can get a TDY that is centrally funded you can often get a good deal of CME that route. Depends on branch and specialty obviously, but AF for example has a lot of stuff going on year-round at Brooks (now Wright Pat). CCATT for example is probably most useful for ER and critical care but is open to everyone and has some use for anyone who will ever deploy (read: everybody). The only real barrier is getting coverage for yourself back at the MTF.

have not had to do mil cme yet as i deferred. however, if you attend a conf and pay out of pocket that is a tax deduction (education expense). just say, though if the hospital requires cme, they should be willing to pay for it.

It's deductible as a work-related expense if it is > 2% of your adjusted gross income, and only the portion > 2% is deductible. And then it's only a deduction, not a credit, so in most cases it doesn't help out at all.

To Tic... What I'm looking for is real CME, not more BS military training.

My old hospital budgeted $1250 for each physician per year, you had to go in the 1st 1/2 of the year as the "fund" got raided every year and they sometimes approved more than $1250. After mid fiscal year, they started denying paid CME unless you submitted the request very early. Knowing that, some people still tried to go at the end of the year and whined about not being funded. I went early, no problem any time. I think one year they paid $2100 in expenses, but I made a good argument. You have to understand how the system is set up at your hospital.

I hear you, just a suggestion 'cause you made it out like you were up against it for maintaining your CME requirements. My unit's making me jump through ten fiery hoops to get a damn bulletin board for my wall, to say nothing up my contact lens reimbursement. God knows when I'll be getting CME from something other than Up-To-Date.
