Considering the decrease in pp salaries and the prospect of pp gas disappearing altogether, would you recommend a freshly matriculated med student considering anesthesiology to do HPSP?

4 years ago when I was an MS1 I was old I'd be crazy to pass up pp for the HPSP but now I'm not so sure.

If the looming change in compensation and nature of private practice Anesthesia is the primary reason for choosing a military scholarship, then no, I would not recommend HPSP.

1.) The pay gap is twofold on average, more if you are within your commitment.

2.) Do HPSP if you want to be in the military right away as a med student. If you can wait, FAP gives you more freedom and TR/ANG gives you a TON of freedom.

3.) Anes deploys for extended periods as it is a critical wartime specialty.

4.) Do not do HPSP for the money.

5.) Do not do HPSP for the money ESPECIALLY if you are doing anes, for sure.

Just a few thoughts to mull over...

I would never tell any freshly matriculated med student to do HPSP for the money, much less make the decision based on imagined/projected salaries 8-10+ years in advance. You should only join the military if you want to be in the military.

Obviously it's a moot point for you, if you were a MS1 four years ago and didn't do HPSP, but if you want to talk about it for some reason, check out the military medicine forum.
