I really don't think that the IS residents are included on that sheet, because all of the interviews listed are on friday or saturday -- yours is a monday. I think I read somewhere that IS interviews are during the week (ie monday/tuesday) but I can't find the email. Looks like they are interviewing MORE than the 230, huh?

From an e-mail weeks ago:
"If your interview is on Friday you can expect to be finished with Saturday’s activities by around 1:30 p.m. We will have 15 to 20 Student Ambassadors to host you during your time at the college. You will be receiving an email the week of your interview with your assigned tour & student panel times."

Has anyone received an e-mail yet? My interview's not until 2:30pm, but I dont know when they expect me to show up at the Pomeroy Center.

For those of you coming to MN this weekend-- weather is looking a wee bit colder than we've had since our last cold spell... -2/4 on Saturday and -10/10 on Sunday and no snow until late Sunday.

Hopefully you don't need to spend much time outside when you're here because when it's -2 it's f-in cold here with the windchill!

On the plus side NO SNOW!😀
I sit here in shorts and a plain shirt with the fan and air conditioning on and can't even fathom those temperatures.

I just want to say good luck to everyone interviewing this weekend. :luck:

That info should be included in the excel file they sent to all the OOS people. The interview time, group panel, and tour times are listed, (As is lunch), by VMCAS id number. PM me with your email if you never got it, and I'll forward it. Or just PM your VMCAS, and I'll look it up for you.

Hahaha, I have a class in the building where the interviews are being held. I can't wait to be able to pick out the non-Minnesotans in their 19 layers of clothing while we all stumble in with MAYBE a sweatshirt and a light jacket.

I'm a little bit confused-- wi girl, which excel file were you referring to? I have only received the OOS interview schedule, transportation, and hotels. Were your panel times included in that email? Thanks!

Oh, no. I'm going to be in bugger all, because I don't even own anything warm. 👎 How do you stay warm in a suit????

Wow ... was I the only one who got this email? There was a second one AFTER the one about hotels and transportation. It was an excel file of all the times for the panels, as well as some info (nothing new) about the behavioral interview. I'll post the email here (in case no one else got it):

Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Minnesota College of

Wow ... was I the only one who got this email?

The first email said that they would send the email the week of our interview, so for us that aren't interviewing this weekend that would explain.

Thanks for posting that, I was so confused. My interview is not until next weekend, so of course I didn't receive that portion yet. Thanks again and good luck!

What about the IS students who are accepted through the VETFAST program? That would lower the number of IS spots. Unless that is already calculated. Just throwing out it out there.

Forgot about that... now I'm THOROUGHLY confused. I guess I'm done with the numbers game for a while.

Sorry for jumping the gun on that one guys! Just wanted to head off any other questions and post everything I knew. Sorry to worry/concern/add more stress!

Will be posing on interview .... soon!!! 🙂 -- well, saturday, at least.

Anyone IS who interviewed- did you have someone come with you for support? We don't have tours or anything, just interview.

Here's the attachment about the behavioral interview -- I didn't think it was anything new.

Just as a sidenote, to those first years on the site -- I LOVE LOVE LOVE your school, and will be very sad if I can't come. That's all.

In the email I received from MN a few weeks ago telling me the date/time for my interview, they mentioned that they would be sending additional information regarding the behavioral interview at a later date. Well, my interview is in 3 days & they haven't sent me anything yet! It was mentioned in a previous post that the OOS applicants interviewing this weekend received an attached document w/ info about the behavioral interview...would anyone be able to post this information please? Any other IS applicants still waiting for info from MN regarding the behavioral interview, or did they just forget to send it to me? 😕

I got my interview date today along with the behavioral attachment that wi girl posted for you. Nothing new like she said. I take it there is nothing but interviews for IS people?

Anyone IS who interviewed- did you have someone come with you for support?

My boyfriend came with me, and I saw people there with parents, roommates, etc. It's really nice to have someone else handle the driving, parking, finding the interview site with you, etc- since, if you're anything like me, your mind will be elsewhere!!

What about the IS students who are accepted through the VETFAST program?

I only have one classmate who was from VETFAST... so I wouldn't expect the number of those students to skew the number of in-state spots much.

Folks that are in town for your interview tomorrow- keep an eye on the weather! Looks like it could potentially be a little gross, so you'll want to plan travel times accordingly.

Good luck everybody!! You'll do great!

Right... at least that's how it was the year I interviewed. If you want a tour or have questions, please please let me know! I'd be happy to meet with you. My schedule's a little bit tight (class from 8 to 5 most days), but on the evenings and weekends I'm pretty open.

Done with my interview at Minn -- it was pretty much as I expected, nothing surprising. I love the school, and only hope they love me back! PM if you have specific questions, but it proceeded how everyone else said it would 🙂

Was there much down time or was the day pretty full? What time was it all over? Did you put in a good word for me?

I didn't have much down time, because they kept things rolling, and when I had more time (i.e. the tour) we just went back and looked at other things ... I had a great tour, got to look at the ICU and a bunch of rooms that we might not have specifically supposed to have seen, but I'm interested in emergency, so it was cool. I'm over at 1:15, but everyone has had different times -- I started at 8:15; some started at 9:30 or later, I'm sure you'll get that info in an email (the friday before your interview is when i got mine). As for putting in a good word for you .... 🙂 'fraid I didn't, but dropped a lot of hints that they have officially moved into my #1 choice slot.

I'm back and freezing in ways men shouldn't freeze. The interview was so short, basically question for question from the list I generated from previous years' questions. I can't believe they base your acceptance almost solely on this little interview, though. Strange.
Oh, and thanks again for the info., Caroline. I saw you a couple times, but you were talking, and I didn't want to interrupt.

Hi everyone I am new to this forum, I can't believe that there are so many just like me waiting to hear from vet schools. I just had a question for those who have finished their interview. Can you give an example of a question that you thought was a good question. I interview next weekend on 2/16
thanks

Check out the thread on the main page "Read Before You Interview"-- it has interview feedback from interviewees. It's VERY helpful! This is the link: http://share.studentdoctor.net/interviewdvm/interview_read.asp

Good luck!!!

Can you give an example of a question that you thought was a good question.

A question we had? Or a question we asked THEM? Mine were pretty similar to the ones posted here. Ones I asked were about stem cell research opportunities (because i work in a SC lab now) and didn't have time for others because my interview ran long ...

Well pretty much i meant both a question you had and a question that asked. I did look at the questions listed in the interview feedback. Very helpful and now I can start preparing! Thanks

Does anyone know how the committee actually decides on the final acceptances? Do they vote on applications periodically throughout the interview process or do they decide on everyone's at once?

Basically I'm asking because I interviewed really early in the process (I'm IS). I feel like I could be disadvantaged if they vote on everything at once at the end, because my interviewers won't remember me as well.

I'm probably worrying about it too much! 😀

This wait is killing me! :scared:

They broke with how they find acceptances on a few different ocassions.
Everyone who was granted an interview is now completely level. The gpa, gre, volunteer/work aspect of the application is completely over. Your final acceptance/rejection is now based solely on your interview and letters of recommendation. They score your answers during the interview, and come up with a total. If your two interviewers scored you very differently, they go back to look at the discrepancies, but I assume that is rare.

Are you on the adcom? I don't think that's what the pre-vet advisor told me. I thought he said at this point admission is based not on academics but the combined score of the interview plus subjective portion of the application.
Maybe I misunderstood him? 😕

The letter I received informing me of an upcoming interview stated:
"The final decision regarding admissions to the program will be based on the results of the interview and the review of the subjective portion of your veterinary application."

No, I just interviewed. That's what the 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year students and interviewers told me. How is what you said different from what I said?

Technically, the subjective portion includes experience. However, my interviewers really emphasized that they could teach almost any technical skill, but it was really the people skills, etc that they were looking for. Most LORs will speak to these skills -- leadership, ability to handle stress, maybe even from a vet something about how you work with clients.

I'm just going to reiterate that I don't care HOW they decide, as long as they come up with me as a yes! 🙂 (Just thought I'd stick some humor in). Completely not helpful either. Hmmmmmm .... I think we're all very much on tenterhooks right now, and its driving us all CRAZY!

I feel that I've done a lot of preparation for the behavioral interview, but I have one question. How much detail should I provide in each of my answers? I know that the interview is fifty minutes, but when I've been practicing, I answer 10 questions in 30 minutes. I tend to talk fast when I'm nervous so I'm trying to work on that. On average, how long should my answers be? I don't want to ramble. Thanks!

Try and speak slowly-- it sounds better AND gives you time to think before you speak. Don't stress about the time-- they will ask you additional questions off of your answers or need clarification on some. Hopefully it will just "flow". It is usually best to be succinct and to the point unless something requires greater elaboration. The more you speak and more you may tend to go in circles and not say what you really mean.

Also, remember you have time to think during the interview. Don't feel pressured to just spew out the first thing that comes to mind.

RELAX! You'll be fine!🙂

Don't worry so much about the length of your answer-just answer the question as completely as you can. They will probably ask you follow up questions as well. My interview actually ended a couple minutes early but I felt like I answered their questions pretty well.

Don't be nervous! Really! I was just there a few weeks ago and I know how you feel but it's really not that bad! The worst part for me was the sitting and waiting in the waiting area, but once I got in their I felt very comfortable talking to both my interviewers-they were really nice and overall I left with a very positive feeling about the overall interview.

Don't be nervous about going over either -- my interview was 20 mins longer, and I didn't really eat lunch, but I had questions I wanted answered! 🙂 They didn't really care either, just made sure I got to the right event next.

does anyone know whether minnesota allows you to change to IS residency after 1 year?

It really depends- they want serious proof that you aren't going to just take your DVM degree and leave the state as soon as you graduate. That means doing things like buying a house, getting a job (I think they count employment if you're working 20 hours a week), volunteering the community, joining a church, etc. I know a couple of people in my class who have managed to do it, but it seems difficult.

does anyone know whether minnesota allows you to change to IS residency after 1 year?

A friend of mine is doing that. I think there are some stipulations that you can't be out of MN for more than 2 weeks on end but call and find out!

I would agree that it seems difficult ... as many people have said, if you are unwilling to go and pay OOS tuition for all four years, then that should be your choice, and IS can just be a pleasant surprise. From what I've heard/found out at the interview info sessions, its difficult, and pretty arbitrary how they make their decisions ... so I'd go with next to impossible, and you hit the lottery if you do.

Hi for people who still need to interview I thought I share some additional interview questions that acquired form a website:

if i interview on friday but everything else is on saturday besides the pizza thing...are we expected to be there the rest of the day on friday??

I have my interview in the morning. I'm going on the tour of the equine center that night, but everything else I am doing on Saturday. I'm planning on coming back to my hotel after my interview.

Good luck today (and tomorrow) for everyone who has interviews!! It's an AMAZING school -- hope you enjoy it!
