I just had my interview, and whatever the outcome, I really think I did the best I could. It seemed like it went really well, but you never know. Good luck to all the other applicants, and thank you for your advice.

I've come to realize, as everyone has as well, that there is seemingly no rhyme or reason why we are "graded" as we are in interviews. They (ad comm) have a system that we are obviously meant to know nothing about (very covert...seemingly intangible and untouchable!) and the outcome is, well, what they want it to be! Best of luck :luck: and maybe you will be pleasantly surprised!

I like how the longer we wait, the more secretive and covert the adcoms become. By the time MN gets their letters out, they'll practically be the KBG (KGB? I forgot the order) -- only nicer, and more mid-western 😀

KGB my dear! Yes, that is what they are like now!

Just wondering how everyone's interviews went ... hope you all had fun! Try not to steal a spot from me, all you talented people! 🙂

I interviewed today. It was pretty much what I expected from all the stuff I've learned on here from the interview sites. Good luck to all those going next week.

I had my interview at MN yesterday, it seemed like it went well. All but two questions were ones that I had prepared for, so there wasn't too much fumbling. Everyone was super friendly, and they really seemed like they were trying to recruit you to the school, when in reality they don't need to recruit at all. I love the Midwest friendliness.

FYI, one of the other interviewees got suckered into a 45$ cab fare from the airport to the school, I rented a car so I was fine, but I'd work out the shuttle if you are too young to rent a car, 45$ is brutal.

Talk about recruiting ... I felt that way too ... I just wanted to stand up and say "I was already convinced! Just let me into your school!" I wonder if that would have helped my chances ..... 🙂

I just had my interview on 2/16 in the afternoon, honestly i can't tell how i did. Did anyone glance at their scoring sheet during the interview? Do u know if the scoring chart was form 1 to 5. well I guess all i can do is wait now, also for those who still need to interview just some advice: on priceline.com you can bid on rental cars, and my fiance got us one for just $15/day, and u can also bid for hotels, i got raddisson at roseville for $54.

Does anyone happen to know how many IS applied and were interviewed?

I really don't know...I was wondering this morning about how many OOS are usually waitlisted.

Does anyone happen to know how many IS applied and were interviewed?

Last year I think it was 197 applied IS. I know they are interviewing 90 this year for 54 seats. A friend of mine was on the waitlist last year and it sounds like they got through 16 spots.

Thanks for the good info! 👍

Further point of data, last year they offered 61 people positions for the 54 spots ... So really, of the 90 interviewed every 2 out of 3 will get an offer ... about the same odds for OOS, really.

Are those really the odds for OOS, every 2 out of 3?

180 interviewed, 84 offers, 35 spots (but if you get an offer and accept you're in, obvi). So roughly 1 out of every 2 ... so IS is a little better off. Sorry to mislead.

I'll check my numbers next time before flinging out fractions and ratios like that. Sorry!

No, that's okay. The whole thing can be confusing. For instance, I'm just wondering what percentage of those 84 offers are from the OOS waitlist vs. how many are accepted initially. I know that obsessing about the numbers is probably silly, but I liked the school so much...

I am in the exact same boat as you. The numbers i'm getting are from the AVMA self-report, which lists 84 offers for a class of 35 OOS. But I didn't even think that some of those offers were probably off the waitlist .... CRAP!! and I thought I was golden! I loved it so so so much too ... and am willing to pay the extra 23K its going to cost me 🙁 I wonder when we'll hear .... man, now i'm not in as good a mood anymore.

However, if I'm remembering correctly, the OOS list was entirely accepted last year, and then some rejections were called back to say they had a spot .... so .... but again, that's one of those hearsay, i think i saw it type of things.

I'll keep you in my good luck bubble Hobiecat ... i.e. my I really hope they get in because they seem to love it as much as I do thought and well wishes bubble ... 🙂

I would assume that if they made 84 offers for 35 spots, that means they took 49 off the alternate list.

I try not to play the numbers game because bottom line is it doesn't matter! In the end it's how much they rate you (but sometimes it is comforting to know you have a 1 in 2 or 2 in 3 shot...assuming you're in the 1 or 2 and not the 2 or 3!).

Thanks wi girl, and good luck to everybody! I'm going to try to relax for the next couple of weeks--I hope everything goes well for those interviewing this weekend.

Ah, I found the bit that I couldn't reference. It was from Stealthdog about C/O 2010 app year:

I was waitlisted as well- #14 on the in-state list. By May I was #3, and I got THE CALL on July 14th, so it crawled a little bit. They did burn through the entire out-of-state waitlist, and even called and did phone interviews over the summer with people who had originally been rejected. Two years ago I know that #17 of the in-state waitlist got accepted (because I know her), but three years ago I think only a few in-staters got it. So, it varies, but recently the waitlist has moved quite a bit. Keep hopes up if you are waiting!

From the MN thread from last year. Just putting that out there.

Wow thats a lot of statistics and odds. I wish everyone who really wants to go to U of M gets to. I met so many nice people during my interview weekend it was great!!!🙂 So can anyone suggest a good way to not keep thinking about how I did on the interview (well other then the stress relief thread)!!!

Haha, it's so hard not to think about it! Depending on my mood, I either feel like I did pretty good, or I totally blew it by saying something stupid. A couple questions I wish I would have answered differently, or elaborated on more.

I don't know what to tell you! The wait is killing me too!!! :scared:

Thats exactly how I feel!!! I feel like I did well and then I feel like oh man I sounded like an idiot just babbaling, and then I think about what i could have added to my answer. By the way I am OOS from michigan.

I wish everyone who really wants to go to U of M gets to.

I hope so too! I'd love to get to go to school with a bunch of people who love it there just as much as I do!

Hey wi girl how bout this i'll keep you in my good luck bubble and you keep me in yours and we'll hope we get in together and we'll see each other on the first day of oreintation👍

Sounds like a plan millie! It seems like most people on this Mn thread have it as a really high choice, and really want to go there -- so I hope we all get in, and see each other the first day of orientation! 🙂 I mean, they do accept 35, and there are fewer of us than that 🙂

For you OOSers, I'm curious what you like best about MN's program? It's my IS school, so I'm probably biased, but I'm curious what you liked the most/least about it?

I'm OOS from PA, and I really liked the curriculum. It seems like they let you get your hands on experience starting right away, and really encourage you to come down and watch surgerys, especially if you have an interest in LA. They have a great SA caseload, and their LA hospital is right there on campus. They seem to have clean, modern facilities, and have recently built the new equine center. They also have a great rep for research, and I am interested in doing the summer scholars program. Everyone was really friendly, too! I like the tracking--it seems like it give you the freedom to design a bit of your own curriculum. Location is good too--near a busy city, but it's also possible to drive a bit and find some good hiking, skiing, etc.

More specifically about the curriculum, I really liked the multiple short classes we take. I get bored of a subject after a bit, so its nice to switch it up. And i like that we're not learning a bunch of stuff all under one heading, they divide it up to make it more specific.

I also really love the carrells were we get to work and take tests. Big desks, and lots of room to study, and a few students told me often on days before exams, the prof just sits in that room for HOURS to answer questions. I like to study where I'm taking my test (my own bastard form of state-dependent learning 🙂)

People and the unity of the class a huge plus -- and the fact that we get hands-on experience very early. A BIG draw over WI, which is pretty much my other choice.

The facilities were great, even the rooms in the basement (anatomy lab) were bright and not dark and scary like most basements.

I also liked that they had so many board certified staff (one in every specialty) -- so you could get a lot of learning in on the rotations. Ironically enough, they also have pulled a few profs away from penn and a few other "top" schools, so there must be something going on! 🙂

In my interview, I had two clinicians, and asked them what they would change about the school -- anything at all. The only thing they mentioned was more tracking (i.e. there's simply too much to learn about so many animals, so the first two years we're kinda bombarded). This is a problem at ALL schools, and I thought it was telling that that was the only thing they could think of.

EDIT: Liked the least? OOS TUITION -- and if I get in, I'll suckit up and pay the extra 23 K a year!!

So, because I am bored, and spending so much time on this thing, I noticed that the number of posts in the MN thread are higher than any other school. Although, some schools do have a few threads ( ::cough -- penn--cough:: ) anyhow, I like the idea of potentially going to school with a bunch of chatty, nice people like we all seem here. mostly, people like me who like to chat with other people. okay. just can't get over the MN love. i wonder how depressed I'll get if i get rejected .... hmm ... okay, back to the reasons we love MN as a school topic 🙂

I was there this past weekend and absolutely fell in love with it. I liked everything I heard about it before I got there, but now I'm really in love. Everyone there was sooo nice and the students were amazing. It really says something about a school when the students are so happy and enthusiastic and really want you to come. They were there driving us back and forth from the local hotels, chatting with us all the time, giving us one-on-one tours, and even going out with us on Saturday night. Beyond that, the school is great... the facilities are awesome. Even the ones that can get pretty dreary at some schools (anatomy lab) were pretty nice places. The new equine center is truly state of the art and overall amazing.
Okay... so I just can't say enough good things about it. Love it.

ahh! I'm hearing so many good things about Mn... I haven't interviewed yet... but I know I'm going to love it and it's def my first choice right now. I'm really nervous about my interview this Saturday because I am absolutely their LAST OOS interview..... the 23rd at 3:45!! This makes me extra nervous... just being last I guess! Hopefully if I can make a good impression it will just leave me memorable... unless I mess up and say something completely dumb. I hope they aren't like.. "let's get this last one over with..." 🙁

There are almost definitely other people with that same time slot. There are a bunch of interview teams, so 6ish people went at the same time this past weekend. You'll still be the last for your interviewers, I guess... but at least you're not the only last, you know?

That's true! I didn't think about that. At least it takes the tension off a little. 🙂 Thanks!

Just wanted to wish good luck to those of you interviewing tomorrow and saturday! Have fun, good luck, and hopefully we'll all do well!

Was anyone taking the tour of the teaching hospital yesterday?

I was working reception up front at the small animal medical center and saw a bunch of folk with name tags being shown around our lobby. Wasn't sure if it was for interviews or not.

I just interviewed a few hours ago... I think I did well, but may have answered one question possibly not to their satisfaction... but who knows?! Everyone was super super nice and I LOVED the school... I'm going to go out tonight with some of the student ambassadors to get some "adult beverages". 😉

I'm so excited about Mn... and I really really hope I get in!! My #1 choice right now... 🙂

p.s. RaptorRehab... I toured the equine center yesterday and toured the school and teaching hospitals today.... I guess I just missed you by a day..!

Hey, have fun! It's my #1 too, I think about getting in/getting rejected day and night. I hope March comes soon, because I'm about ready to check myself into the looney bin. Glad you liked the school adOggy!

I'm so glad you liked our school. I'm really proud to work for such an innovative teaching hospital (although managing 19 departments is intense!). Barbette in uptown is having a wine happy hour tonight from 10-midnight, that's where I'll be!

Hobiecat.. I wish I could know right this very moment whether I'm in or not too! I know that the interviewers score you from the interview and once you get a score, you pretty much have that part set. I don't know how much longer it takes for them to deliberate the other subjective part... letters of rec and personal statement and all that... but I'm going crazy just thinking about how bad I want to go to Mn!

The director of admissions did say that they are going to start sending out letters in a couple of weeks.. so I'm assuming around March 15th is when we'll all hear something...

😀 GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US!!!
🙂

RaptorRehaber.. I've no idea where we are going tonight yet, but I'm sure it will make for a good night! 😀

p.s. my bf is looking over my shoulder and telling me how it's taking wayyy to long for me to make that good luck sign... hehe

I'm IS and I hope to be in class with you nice SDNers next year! 🙂
I was told letters would go out "mid March". Here's hoping!:luck::luck:

Hi everyone, I'm new to SDN (oh, how I wish I would have known about this site in September when I was stressing out about my application!). I'm an IS applicant to MN, and I had my interview a few weeks ago. They told me that they would be notifying us the first or second week in March...it is going to be really hard not to stalk the mailman for those 2 weeks!

Just curious, does anyone know what kind of computer MN wants the vet students to have? I asked about this at the interview, and they didn't have any information, but said that the school would let accepted students know more about it at a later date. My PC is fast approaching worthless status (it is over 8 years old), and I am really anxious to purchase a new computer...but I want to make sure that it meets MN's requirements (this is of course assuming that I'll be accepted!).

When i interviewed, I asked the students and staff; there wasn't any particular TYPE you needed, it just had to fulfill some minimum requirements. my macbook pro blew them out of the water apparently, and anything more than 4 years old did, so pretty much anything new will be good was my impression. I'm sure if you emailed admissions, they could direct you to how to find the info.

Good luck!

Hi all 🙂

First, congrats on everyone who is done with the interview part and good luck to all of you as you wait to hear! When I interviewed in 2006, I got my letter telling me I was waitlisted on March 4th. I was in state, and believe I heard back earlier than any out-of-staters.

Second, as far as computers, there are a few required CD ROMs with lab information (images, how to do a physical exam, etc) that only work on a PC or a Mac with Windows installed. Aside from that, anything else you do is online, so having a Mac vs PC doesn't really matter. There are computers to use in the library, so if you have a Mac and find you really need to see something on the CD ROMs, you can always go there. I have a Mac and while I would have liked to use the CD ROMs for labs, I wasn't too inconvenienced (especially if you find study buddies with PCs).

As a first year, you get an extra $1500 of financial aid to cover getting a new computer 🙂

I hope you all hear good news soon!

One last thing- my waitlist letter came in a BIG envelope. I was super disappointed when I opened it and it said "We regret to inform you that...". Not that you all should be expecting to get waitlisted, but I would have liked a warning that happy letters AND waitlist letters can come in giant envelopes...

Good luck!

😀 That seems like a really mean trick!!!

I can totally see myself getting all worked up over a big envelope too! At least you got in though!🙂

A friend of mine 2 years ago that was waitlisted said her waitlist came in a small envelope, but maybe it's "small" compared to the admissions stuff?
