Thanks for the advice for the Honors college thread. I showed it to my cousin and he was convinced to go for the easiest route to a high GPA 😉

Now, him and I have another argument. He wants to do a minor in a humanities that he is interested in, but will have to take several extra courses. His reasoning is that, the adcoms will feel that his minor in a humanity (Anthropology) will make him a better rounded candidate and thus stand out.

Is there any truth to this? Does doing a major in biology and a minor in a humanity make any difference whatsoever versus just doing a major??

I don't know a thing you can do with an Anthropology minor that'll help with admissions. Or a major, for that matter. But if he's into it and he wants the extra tag and bump to his GPA, sure. Sounds great.

That's all I can say.

Minor in something of interest or don't minor. Most adcoms will not care. I should add that at least 50% of one interview (and it was the only interview at this particular school) was spent discussing my second [insert humanities/social sciences subject here] major. [Humanities/social science subject] happened to be of personal interest of the interviewer.

It wouldn't hurt you unless you performed subpar in the anthro classes. I have a history minor because i have a second passion for history and felt it would allow me "grow" as an individual. The 30 credit hours of 4.0 are nice too! : )

If he finds the subject matter interesting, why not do it.

As a general rule: Med schools barely care what your major is. They COULD NOT CARE LESS what your minor was or if you even had one.

P.S. Use the search function next time please.

There is a strong potential of using his anthropology minor in his personal statement of why he wants to become a doctor...etc etc

Anthropology is the study of PEOPLE and understanding CROSS-CULTURAL behavior and the reason behind them.

These kind of studies has enormous implications for your role as a physician.

Agree with this part. Especially if he takes courses in medical anthropology. I wrote a lot about "healing vs curing" in my PS. But really, if he's going to take classes for a minor, it should be something that he's interested (and will do well) in! If it's anth, that's great. IMO, even if adcoms don't care...med anth is really interesting

As I said, if he finds it interesting, go for it. In answer to his question of will schools think he is more "well rounded" because of it, the answer is no, because schools do not care about minors.
