This is my first post and i wanted to know if there are any minority applicants out there. Im a black female (21 on march 27th!!)studying for the MCAT right now and currently have a 3.05 (pretty low, I have 6C's on my transcript from a bad 2nd year). If anyone has any advice, comments, or anything that is helpful to say, it would be greatly appreciated. My dream is to get in an HBCU but im kinda worried! :(

it would be even more helpful to know where you all stand as far as MCAT scores or GPA. its really competitive at my school and no one talks aboutit so i dont know how bad in doing.

I just sent you a personal message...

Hey there. Welcome to SDN! As far as your MCAT question goes, there is a WIDE range of scores on here and usually people that have scores higher than 30 actually post them. Needless to say, don't think the scores posted on this site are representative of all medical school applicants. Some people are embarassed. And the only good MCAT score is the one that gets you in (but you should still shoot for 29-30+). In any case, if you have any questions for me, shoot. This was my third consecutive applying to school and I finally got in (to four schools even)! So I've been around in this stuff for a while...

Hey, I go to Xavier U. too. You'll be fine as long as you listen to Carmichael, even though he can be brutal at times. Just keep your grades up and do decent on the MCAT and your picture will be up with the rest of your classmates next year.

3.0 gpa....Raise it.

I agree that you should try to raise your gpa. Try to end on a very strong note mostly A's a couple of B's to show an upward trend. I was in a similar position around a 3.0 gpa from Columbia. I did Teach for America then a postbac program earning all A's and a grad program 4.0 and a strong mcat. I had 4 acceptances and 2 waitlists. I dont think you have to go the same route but it will be very important for you to get a strong score on the mcat with a 3.0 gpa. Try for 9-10 on each section. Earn good grades this semester. Take a couple of summer courses and earn A's so they can go on your amcas application. Good luck.

Hi psych:

I am a graduate of Xavier University class of 2000. I had a 3.38 G.P.A and an MCAT score of a 22 V-8 B-7 P-7 WS R the second time around the first time I had an 18. I got accepted to the Medical College of Georgia. I applied early decision. I knew MCG was where I wanted to go. Don't worry so much about numerical figures. Take pride and confidence in knowing that you are a Xavier student. Trust me Carmichael knows what he is doing. Do everything that he says and always turn everything in on time. If this makes you feel better I can tell you what the Dean of Admissions told me "Because you are a graduate of Xavier University and the students who we have accepted in the past who graduated from Xavier University have done extremely well you have an advantage." Listen to me when I tell you this and I am not trying to sound cocky are arrogant but medical schools salivate over Xavier students because we (whether you realize it or not) or well prepared for the rigors of medical school. Xavier is known by the medical admissions committee at most medical schools. They all praise Carmichael and want to know how he does what he does. I am serious they beg me to tell them "our so called secrets." Xavier is not any easy school to graduate from. I had 5 C's on my transcript two from History one Philosophy course one micro course and one botany lab course. But my transcript showed I did well in all other courses getting A's and B's. Relax, pray, study hard for the MCAT, try to maintain or increase your GPA and listen please listen to Carmichael. GOD BLESS. XU one love baby.

psyc. study for the MCAT and do as well as you can. You do not need a 34 just a competitive score. Some of these people on this site fake jacks with their scores. Ma just do well on the MCATS make sure your volunteering and research is straight, and hand your application in early. Personally I have a 3.46 from NYU and a 28 MCAT, and I be damn if I am taking that boring ass test again. Handle your buisness and you will have a good shot to get in there. Boricua (NYC). holding it down..

I agree with most everyone on this list. Try your best to finish on a high note by getting the best grades and study hard for the MCAT. Take the prep calsses and whatever else. You'll be fine. Don't worry!!
