Soo i just ended up contacting AMCAS regarding the policy on retaken courses. I have read various post from SD members claiming that the two classes would be averaged in your sGPA calculation. AMCAS basically told me that each class will be treated as a separate class regardless of whether or not it is retaken. Just a heads up for any of you out there who like to calculate your official stats ahead of time!

Counting it as a new course and averaging the two grades accomplishes the same thing...

This. Except if for some reason one class was worth more credits at one school than at another. For instance. I took Calc I at Duke for 4 credits. I retook it at a Florida State U and it was 5 credits. Only 5 credit course on my transcript. It was weird.

A 5credit math class😱

I don't think I've seen a 5credit class.

Neither had I. I thought it was a typo back when I took it. But there it is...on my transcript, lol. Only 5 credit course I've ever seen. What pissed me off is EVERY class at Duke was 4 credits, even my English classes. I got a B in one, which brought my GPA down more than it should have. But oh well...

Same here, all classes even ones with lab were worth 4credits at my undergrad.

Not exactly: If you average the two grades, say 4 credits of F, then a repeated 4 credits of A, you'd end up with 4 credits of C instead. If it counts equal to a new course, then the two grades would count the same as 8 credits of C. The latter is how AMCAS would do it.

e.g. weighted average that counts double.

OK, I see where the confusion would come in if you don't account for the extra credit hours.

I was thinking more along the lines of

C X 8credit hours = A X 4credit hours + F X 4credit hours
