mods move too many posts...

so what if they belong in the ready made threads? you get more answers for having your own thread than in a 13 page thread...

big deal if it's a repeat question... just answer it and move on. if you dont like it, dont view the post.

no need to move posts guys..

Hi, supernareg,

I hear that you think that we may be merging threads too frequently. I'm one of the folks charged with merging threads, and I'm aware of your main complaint. Our current system of merging similar new threads into "master" threads was put into place some time ago to address issues we and other members have noted in the past. There may be times where more threads appear to get merged and other times when it appears to be more quiet. Indeed, some of the redirects you may have noticed in the past may have been at least a month old and have outlived their purpose. We have now expired the old, redundant redirects and are expiring any new redirects promptly to address this.

We appreciate your understanding and feel that this current system is the most effective way thus far to keep the flow going. Members can reduce the need for us to merge threads by reading the sticky posts above and using the appropriately themed thread to post their questions instead of just starting a new thread.

While it might be true that at times members who start new threads get their question noticed more immediately and may arguably receive more responses, there can also be a cost associated with opening a new thread each time for a similar question, or theme, especially during periods of increased traffic. The cost is usually in the form of numerous similarly themed threads that tend to spam up the forum pretty quickly. A good example of this happening is with the "What are my chances?" type threads that popped up one after another each cycle. In the past, both moderators and members have noticed this issue, realizing that it can be of some detriment to the flow of the forum. Thus, we, meaning the moderation team, attempted to consolidate threads with common themes, in order to address this issue. We carefully noted which types of threads kept popping up frequently. New threads that fit these frequent themes are merged into an appropriate main thread.

We do our best to moderate lightly and only when it is indicated. We recognize that there is a type of homeostasis in the forums and every attempt is made to maintain this balance while doing our best to also maintain efficient and effective flow through proper management.

We appreciate constructive feedback and will consider it along with the needs of the forum and our members.

I disagree.

Its part of the conditioning process.

"Keep posting the same questions and we will keep moving them."

Newbies will eventually catch on.

Streamlined SDN. I like it.

So how does subscriptions work? if we subscribed to a thread we wanted answers to, and that thread gerts moved, are we subscribed to the massive thread that it was moved to?

I'll research your question and get back to you. What I know right now is that when two threads are merged, they become one thread.

I'll research your question and get back to you. What I know right now is that when two threads are merged, they become one thread.

So I did some experimentation and here's what I found out:

When thread A is merged into thread B, it becomes a single thread, identified as thread B. If I was originally subscribed to thread A and I merge it into B, it looks like the subscription switches over to thread B.

For another scenario, let's imagine that I am subscribed to thread B, but not A. When I merge thread A into thread B, there will be no change in my subscription. I am still subscribed to thread B.

I hope this answers your question.

...you get more answers for having your own thread than in a 13 page thread...

Maybe, but maybe not. The real truth is that the answer to your question is already on SDN somewhere. There hasn't been an actual "new" question in years because the same ones repeat over and over again every cycle. The quickest way to get an answer to your question is to search for it rather than wait hours, or even days, for responses from other posters. Some people seem to think that searching is just too much of a hassle, though. So...these "master" posts can eliminate the need to do any searching in a lot of cases. You might just find that the answer to your query is already posted there.

Some people say they just like personal responses, but in many cases when you ask a question you won't get the best responses at all. Granted, you might get a lot of replies, but they aren't from people who have the right answers. They're from people just like you who have absolutley no experience at all but like to sound as if they do. They are more than willing to give you their opinion, but what good is that really if they don't have a clue to begin with? Often, the people who really have knowledge about the subject have already answered the question a hundred times before and are just tired of it. They won't take the time to reply to your post at all.
