How much money are ya'll planning on saving over the summer to have when starting dental school. I am trying to figure out what a good amount is to live off of before I get my loan money.

Live like a student now! or live like a student later! Save all your mula and eat Ramen!

Ok, so maybe I should rephrase my question. I have never had a loan before and this thought scares me. I have always worked for everything i have and I am very not comfortable knwoing that I might run out of money and not be able to get a second or third job to cover my butt. When I move to Philly will my loan money be available to me as soon as I start school? Because somehow I was under the impression that funds aren't released until September and in that case I need money of my own to live until then for stuff like rent, food, parking, etc. Am I correct or is everything really so much easier than I thought?????

GT,

Contact the school and ask them when the first funds are dispersed to you.

I contacted Arizona, and we actually get our excess funds check (what my wife and son and I will be living off of!) just prior to our white coat ceremony on the first day of orientation!

I think the money situation IS easier than you are making it out to be, but saving money is never a bad thing, either!

Amen, Gavin.

It's an unfortunate reality that just about nobody can afford to pay for dental school out of pocket; it's just way too steep. The good news is, the student loan well is damned near bottomless. Think of it as borrowing against your future net worth; it's not the most comforting thought, I know, but with the work ethic it sounds like you have, making good on the loans should be no problem.

Also, despite what most people say, it's not impossible to work to earn some money during dental school. If you do it right, it doesn't even have to be painful. The key is to find a source of income that YOU control, and can mold around your school obligations, rather than working on someone else's terms and having to juggle.

In my case, I'm in the National Guard (one weekend a month, and I'm home by 4 which leaves plenty of study time), which is a gold mine if you know how to CYA at the beginning. On top of that, I'm a soccer referee, which in addition to providing $50-$75 for a couple hours' work, it also forces me to get up and run around for a couple hours occasionally. The best part is, it's totally up to me which contracts I accept. I can work as many or as few games as I want.

When it comes to doing it during dental school, working is just like anything else--you can do it, but only if you're smart about it.
