Anyone out there moonlight during their research years? Any advice in getting set up? Ideally I'd like to take surgery or critical care call.

I've heard that working in urgent care is the easiest to find...but honestly how many of us can reduce dislocations and diagnose rashes?

The easiest gig to find is one within your own hospital system. Second easiest is other hospitals in town.

Start with your senior surgery residents and ask them where they've worked at. I was able to moonlight at a local community hospital that we rotated at but did not have in house residency programs; hence they couldn't cover the call schedule with the residents regularly rotating there. I also covered at the local osteopathic hospital which also did not have enough residents to cover their schedule. All surgery call with attending back up.

Totally, totally, totally location dependent. Gotta ask your older buddies or go knock on doors to know what is available in your area.

As for urgent care, as my (board certified) ER buddy says, there are 3 types of rashes
1) stevens johnson
2) meningococcemic purpura
3) something that will be there for the dermatologist to see on Monday

I wouldnt' touch an ER with a 10 foot pole - but urgent care is easy enough to learn.
