Because even at 4 years, dental school is one big cram session.

I'm positive that if dental school was 5 years, it'd still be a pretty intense program.

its just that i hear from so many dental students what a hell hole dental school can be; so who wouldn't want to get out of it a year earlier

why is uop not 4 years like everybody else... because uop students only need three years to be as competent as everybody else

You push, so I'll push back a little as well. :D

Being "competent" isn't exactly something to be proud of. I think nearly anybody, regardless of intellect or abilities, could be "competent" in the sense of board exams in very little time.

I think we all hope to be far above competent.

honestly,
i think that if all the dschools are 3years long then it would not be respected respected much in our society. i am not trying to bash UOP, i think it is a great unique program.

one of the key things that MDs get so much respect is because everyone knows that they have to do like 6 to 10 years. So a lot of people would assume that dentists are like fake doctors wanna be. I am sure that a lot of us heard those statements and many of us have developed a way to not to take it personal.

when someone tell me how long is dschool i tell them 4-10years, it depends and they go like WOW

oh, by the way not a dentist yet...starting in fall

Well it's obvious to me that you don't know what you're talking about. UOP is only 3 years because they cut out the ridiculous long vacation breaks and have evening clinics. It's basically 4 years crammed into 3. At OHSU, you get 3 months for the first summer, and 6 weeks for the second and third. Then there's the 3 week winter breaks and the 1 week spring breaks. Plus there are some terms you go to school 4 days a week. That all adds up to about 1 year. UOP is very respected, and just because it's only 3 years doesn't mean it's not as good as others.

ur ego likes to feed off that?

i did not mean to say anything bad about UOP.
But i guess u guys are taking my comments in the wrong way because u are being a little defensive there.
i have nothing against UOP OK

U guys go to UOP good for ya
take it easy.

about my ego............common guys i have tons of people that i respect and now are ,DDS,DMDs+specialists and every single one of them went through a stage of dealing with annoying people just straight up bashing dentistry by comparing it with MD programs. Many of those dentists had to take same classes as med students for a while and felt that it was kind of frustrating.
Who knows.... maybe those dentists lied to me and u guys never had an EGO problem of dealing with people like that or never will.

i take a lot of proud about the career that i chose. If you are one of those: yes i am super humble, it is not about the money, no about respect, i like help people and etc....Then good for ya
Maybe we are not in the same page, but of course there is always that chance that we are just simple different.

There are quite a few schools that have minimal or NO summer breaks at all and they still go for four years. It's not like the additional year in a 4-year program will actually make students WORSE clinicians. We all want to get done with school and move on with our lives and professions.

Obviously UOP has found a way to be successful, but the converse of that (that other schools don't have 3-year programs because they have breaks) simply isn't true.

At Arizona, we get out of school at the end of June and start the end middle-end of July. That's not a huge break by any means.

UNLV does a consistent 15 week on, 2 week off semester. Even through the summer. So it is essentially a 4 year full time program.

was just joking about the ego thing. Know exactly what you mean about those annoying people; had my fair share of them already and i'm only a pre-dent
