Is there a medical specialty that seems to attract the most "intellectual" students? Not necessarily the smartest, but the ones you'd characterize as the deepest thinkers?

what exactly is endo and ID? 🙂

many of the IM subspecialties contain intellectually challenging cases that require good detective work and problem solving ability. some of the more intense surgical fields require intricate hand-eye ability and intuition. whatever floats your boat.

I think that pretty much sums up pathology.

Nephrology usually has that reputation.

neuro and to certain extent psychiatry 🙂

The most intellectual physicians I've met are in neurology, pathology, nephrology, and cardiology. But pretty much all the physicians I've met are damn smart.

I'm in cardiology but work in a city Hospital and the VA, so I don't make the big bucks, but I love it!

Obivously Derm, why else would all the top ranked medical geniuses do that residency?

I've heard geneticist is a very niche/academic specialization. Never met one though.

I love rhuem! Weirdest **** ever.

And the derms, while they have the nicest life ever, some of that skin stuff is really stymying. Is that a word? Whatevs. I realized I caused there to be two threads up about the most "intellectual" specialty. Haha. I couldn't resist that someone said, "All the docs I've work with are really smart." Haha, yes, all docs are "smart." But really? hahahahaha

This post sounds like it came from a 14 yr old girl. Lol

Old ass thread, but I'll bite.

Fields I have heard have reputations for being intellectual or I see as stereotypically intellectual are: Neuro, nephro, ID, Allergy/Immuno, Pathology, Hem-Onc, and Psych.

so true, i'm having a hard time imagining a resident talking like that
There's an actual resident around here that posts like that. I won't say names 😉

Endo and nephro both probably up there. Totally disagree with ID -- at least where I've worked they are very knee jerk in terms of demanding line holidays etc despite evidence to the contrary --a lot of times they seem to be on auto-pilot and unable to see the bigger picture. Show me a sick patient with difficult access issues and I'll show you an ID doc wanting to pull his only lines out.

Right, jump in with your well chosen words.

Whatevs, you're a med student, good luck sounding so smart as an intern. I've written some great posts on the topic you should check out because you're going to need the help. Everybody does.

I was actually defending you

I met a couple of interns this year who had the whole valley girl thing going on. Turns out they are both integrated plastic surgery interns.

I don't really care how someone talks as long as they're competent at what they do. For what it's worth, I think that lots (not all) of patients really like docs who are kind of bubbly and casual in their natural voice.

It doesn't make that persona any less hilarious or mockable as a caricature.
