So, I'm a huge movie buff. I know there've been threads over in the lounge on this, but for kicks, maybe we can get one going here.

For starters, I just saw the movie "The Pledge". Fantastic plot. Pretty heavy (good IMO), and an all star cast. A really good movie.

I don't consider myself a big Brad Pitt fan but the guy can pick his roles pretty well, A River Runs Through It, Thelma and Louise, Seven, you know the type. But two of my fav's are Fight Club and Snatch. I know everyone has seen them but just tough I'd put a vote in for these. Haven't seen anything recently worth mentioning.

Also a favorite, Sin City.

HEAT is my fav. Can't beat De Niro, Pachino, Val Kilmer. Amazing action and plot. Good enough to encourage those guys to rob those Cali banks in full body armor a decade or so ago.

Let me add one thing, Nicolas Cage is the worlds worst actor. Any action adventure by that tool is crap. Over played and over dramatasized (not a word).

But Raising Arizona rules.

An oldie but goody, if you can sit still for 3 hours, is "Apocalypse Now".

One of my all time fav's.

Me too. GREAT MOVIE.

I agree, too, on Brad Pitt. River Runs Through It is solid. I also liked Legend of the Falls, which some may consider cheesey....

Blade, I loved 300 too. Didn't think I would, but, it was somehow inspiring.

Gladiator is another good flick.

O.K........ Talk about crummy actors...... Antonio Bandaras. HOWEVER, 13th Warrior is a TOTAL hidden gem. Very cool movie.

I'll post more in time. Good responses guys!

Come to think of it. Since you mentioned Brad Pitt. A GREAT movie is True Romance, of which he has a pretty minor role. Very good movie. All the bells and whistles. Crazy cast. You won't believe the talent here. Great plot. Highly recommend it.

Seriously- 13th warrior is a great movie! I hadn't even heard about it before I saw it on late night cable. Like, get home from a bar at 1 a.m., and it;s the only thing on. Before long, it;s 3 a.m. and I'm looking forward to the ending.

ALong the line of other guilty pleasures, I like what George Clooney does. It's a pretty sad plot, but try Out of Sight. Also has Don Cheadle, a terrific actor.

Shawshank Redemption
The Elephant Man

Shawshank Redemption
The Elephant Man

o.k. the elephant man.... when i was a kid, my parents were like "hey, let's teach the youngins about morals and how to treat people...." well, ****, i was like 6. that movie scared the crap out of me. for about 6 years, literally now, i slept with my blanket over my ears. kind of hard to explain, but it was totally freaky..............!!!

in retrospect, i read the biography of "john marrick". crazy, but it helped. now, i see the movie and it's no biggy, but when i was 6, it was a big deal....

Dark and macabre, violent and fairly disturbing... and awesome:
Shallow Grave (Ewan McGregor)
Usual Suspects
Children of Men
True Romance (actually, with Christian Slater)
Heathers (again, with Slater)
28 Days Later + 28 Weeks Later
The Game (Michael Douglas)
Crash (the first one, with Holly Hunter and James Spader)
American Psycho (Christian Bale)
Requiem for a Dream (uncut a must!; w/ Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly)
Donnie Darko
Kill Bill
Clockwork Orange
Seven
Lock, Stock...
Fight Club
Cube (first one only)

Recent excellent Pixars:
Wall-E
Kung Fu Panda

Anime (mature, smart, violent, non-porn):
Afro Samurai (mini series, Samuel Jackson narrating!)
Ghost in the Shell (original movie, and whole TV series)
Samurai Champloo (whole series)
Akira (movie)
Cowboy Bebop (series and movie)
Elfen Lied (series; very graphic, esp first 7 minutes of episode one)
Vampire Hunter D (both the older and newer versions)
Hellsing (series)
Requiem from the Darkness (series)
Full Metal Alchemist (52 episode series, but worth it)

Just some off the top of my head. YMMV
🙂

Jaws
DieHard
Jurassic Park
Terminator 1-3

Nice thing about these movies is that you don't have to rent them, as there is a FCC mandate that at least one of these movies must be on-air at every hour of the day/night. Much to my (but not my wife's) viewing pleasure.

If you want to spend money, rent The Outlaw Josey Wales.

American Gangster

The first two are classic Deniro and Pecci, just awesome.

American Gangster is less violent, but I liked it a lot.

This is really scary. This is pretty much my list to the T. Another one to consider if you like Snatch/Lock Stock and two smoking barrels is Formula 51 (any movie that has Meatloaf and Samuel L Jackson in a kilt has got to be OK).

Others
Blackhawk Down
Gettysburg (even longer than Apocalypse now)
Blade Runner
Lucky Number Slevin
Ultraviolet
Serenity
The whole Mariachi series

Anime
Ghost in the Shell
Aeon Flux (the MTV series)

And those two classics
Zardoz
Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eight Dimension

For series I highly recommend Torchwood

Good Will Hunting
Wall Street

Train Spotting
Lawrence of Arabia

Man, lots of good ones coming up here.

Another of what I sort of consider a "hidden gem" is Mothman Prophecies with Richard Gere. It's kind of a supernatural mystery thriller. Pretty freaky movie.

Also, an old Sydney Pollack movie, Barry Lyndon is exceptional. Good history, and a very fun movie. Very unique. Anyone seen it??

The Life Aquatic
The Darjeeling Limited

My two favorite movies EVER!

Barry Lyndon is great. I've heard it was shot completely with natural light, which gives it its unique appearance. Best duel scene in a movie. (Stanley Kubrick not Sydney Pollack)

You basically can't go wrong with anything Kubrick - Paths of Glory and 2001: A Space Odyssey are two other great movies that haven't been mentioned here yet. I also think Eyes Wide Shut is very underrated.

Yeah, Kubrick, not Pollack.....lol I'll check out Paths of Glory. Wasn't too huge on Eyes Wide Shut though.

Memento

on the subject of memories (or lack therof)... the butterfly effect & eternal sunshine of the spotless mind are both fantastic.

Huge Movie Buff myself... my favorite 3:

Batman Begins
Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
V for Vendetta

All of them have to do with revenge/anarchy. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Saw The Professional back in the day. Frankly, I was a bit turned off by the "relationship" between the hitman dude and Natalie Portman who was like 12 at the time...... Did you pick that up, or maybe it was just me, it was a long time ago?? I remember thinking it was totally creepy.

Jet clears his throat.

"HIGHHHHHWAY TO THE DANGER ZONE!!!!

Top Gun, ladies and gentlemen.

I've got a spare just in case the first one messes up during viewing.

WANNA EXPERIENCE SURROUND SOUND?

This is the movie to do it with.👍

2nd the Boondock Saints.

Also, I really liked Gran Torino starring Clint Eastwood. Just saw it last week and thought it was fantastic.

The Devil's Own. About the IRA with their U.S. ties. Starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt (NO, I DON'T HAVE A MAN CRUSH ON BRAD PITT!!!!!!! LOL)

Glory... perhaps Denzel's finest work

AMAZING!!!

My father had no problem taking me to "R" rated flicks when I was young. He either thought it would mature me or he needed a companion. Either way I was always excited to go. My favorites were the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns:
Fist Full of Dollars
The Good The Bad and the Ugly
Hang em High
Outlaw Josie Wells

I never pass on one of these.

We also went to see, Dog Day Afternoon which made an impression on me.

I remember when I was in kindergarden, my dad and I went the a Clint Eastwood double feature at the drive-in in San Antonio,Tx. We made it through the first film but fell asleep during the second one. I remember waking my dad up at daylight and we were the only car in the drive-in, around 6am. My dad was a peds oncology fellow at the time so he would crash at the drop of a hat. Funny but I will never forget that.

Jeremiah Johnson

Bet I've seen it 50 times, never gets old
