Can someone recommend a reliable car moving company that they have used? I also want to pack my car with personal items. Do certain companies allow this?

I'd just suck it up and make the drive. Coast to coast is only 3 12-hr days... 🙁

I got a quote on moving a car across country with no stuff packed in it and it was over 1k, which is enough for me to suck it up and drive it!

I would hate to drive 3,000+ miles in the sweltering heat this summer. Has anyone started moving their cars yet?

I am also moving from coast to coast (Boston to LA) and I did a little research into shipping my car. I got quotes ranging from $800 to $3,000. (I got all the quotes online using google, and unfortunatly for most, they are not instant--they e-mail you) It seems you have to decide if you want it shipped in a closed container truck/train or an open truck, and then there is a difference in price for top rack or bottom rack. What I did find universally true was that items left in your car are not in any way insured, and I am not aware of any company that allows you to ship more than 50 lbs worth of stuff inside your car.

I decided to justify shipping because I calculated that it would cost approx $300 in gas, $240 in hotel (4 nights x $60), $100 in food, a lot of hassle and a ton of wear and tear on the car.

Go to transportreviews.com. It's a great website that ranks various auto shipping companies. Customers rank all the companies and write personal reviews. I am using ICS Auto Shipping (insightcargo.com) They have 4/5 stars on that website, the customer service is great, and the quote was the lowest I recieved. I would call a couple of companies before you decide, and DEFINIETLY check out that website--it's wonderful and very highly accessed.

To ship my car from LA to West Virginia was $800 with ICS. Other companies were giving me anywhere from $950-$1100, usually on the higher end. We'll see when they come to pick up and how the delivery is.. 🙂 Wish me luck.
And good luck to you!

I'm shipping a toyota landcruiser (aka big ass suv... 13mpg) and driving it, at least in my case, would cost more than shipping it out. I'm planning on using DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) its the one used on ebaymotors. 775 bucks uninsured from CA to Chicago (it has insurance and the truck is immune to scratches  ).

I might check out albumoon's ICS before confirming. And that review site is really good.

chicklett1, what company did you decide to go with? I'm not sure what forms of transportation is best, whether it is open or closed container or by train.

Thanks ablumoon, I'll check out that website.

BerkeleyMD, I did look into DAS, but they dont have door to door services. I think you have to pick it up at a certain location, usually up to 50miles or something like that.

Having driven cross country three times, I beg to differ. You will need four full days behind the wheel. Well, actually I did make it once in three and a half- but the first of those "days" I drove for 22 hours straight (from San Francisco to Amarillo, TX)!

They do door-to-door for more $$, but I'll just get a cab to their location and pick the car up.

i'm also working on shipping my car and just a thought to everyone shipping things places. check whatever company you decide to ship with out at the Better business bureau website before shipping. you might find some helpful info on which companies to avoid...

Or you could do an Easy Rider and do it in a single, stimulant-fueled tear across the country. I'll even burn you a copy of the soundtrack

You can get from Andrews AFB, MD to Fisherman's Wharf in SF in 37 hrs. If you want to know how I know this, feel free to ask

I could understand shipping a large vehicle like that with low gas mileage and the price of gas, but my civic gets nearly 40mpg highway, so it really is cheaper for me to drive it!

Methamphetamines and a pee bottle in your car?

No, three friends in your car, three people in another car, a week of uncharged leave from the Air Force courtesy of doing a favor for the base commander (escorted a bunch of Argentinian officers around, basically got f--ked up on their dime, and was thanked by our commander for it)......we bet $500 bucks each.....the deal was you had to get to Fisherman's Wharf, take a picture and first team to get back got the money.

The trip out was fine.....but on the way back I fell asleep as we were going through western Colorado. I had told the guys (none of whom had ever been further west than Pittsburgh before), to wake me up before we got into Denver so that we could stop and get something to eat and make sure we didn't get lost.

Needless to say I woke up as we pass a sign stating
"CHEYENNE XXX miles"..... 😕 "PULL OVER NOW!" Once I realized these two idiots somehow would up getting off of I-70 and driving into the "scenic" 🙄 part of Wyoming. Basically we turned around and had been on the road about 10 minutes when my friend Richie announced he had to use the bathroom. He goes trotting off into this gully and a few minutes later we hear a very high pitched feminine scream followed by him appearing over the edge of the gully screaming and pulling his pants up. "IT'S TRYING TO EAT ME!!!!" We all jump in the car and Richie comes diving into my car....I decided to sit there and see what was "attacking" him. It was a buffalo....which came moseying over the hill.....I promptly burst out laughing as both of the guys are going "What? What is it? Go!!! Go!!!"

ME: "You *****s....it's a plant eater...."
ADAM: "What?"
ME: "It's a buffalo. You two need to get out of Philly and New York more often."
RICHIE:"Are you sure it's not mean?"
ME: "Yes"
ME: "What did it do to you?"
RICHIE: "I was squatted down doing my business and all of the sudden this thing licked me!"
ME: "So you're telling me you got rimshotted by a buffalo?"
