Hey guys,

I’m from Florida and I’ll be moving to Pittsburgh to start school this fall and I was wondering how to ship all my stuff (bed, table, chairs, computer, etc, etc) to Pittsburgh. I’ve never moved out to a different state, so I have no experience about shipping stuff to a different state. Could you guys please share your experiences about shipping stuff out of state? Did you guys pack everything in big boxes and mail them? Did you guys hire a truck that delivers your stuff?
Any suggestion is appreciated!

Thank you for your help and time in advance!

When my parents threw me out of the house, I packed up all my stuff and hired a moving company. It is way too expensive to mail stuff, cause you get charged by weight.

PM me, I'm from Pitt and I'm moving and am trying to sell my stuff here

In my experience of moving between states, which I've done a few times, you rent a truck (UHaul, Ryder, Penske or some variation), tow your car behind it (if you have one) and pay them $500 or so for the privilege of packing up all your stuff and moving it yourself. A one-way move is more expensive than returning the truck to its origin, but you don't have to double the mileage and waste twice the time. If your furniture isn't worth that much, consider getting new furniture from IKEA.

when I moved after college, I just sold everything on craigslist, then bought what i needed when i got there, again from craigslist. i ended up making money, too 😀

i got a desk for $35, a full-sized bed + mattress for $60, and a dresser for $50. and when my laptop broke, i got a sweet reformatted computer for $90.

all the stuff i got is nice, amazing, and clean. except the dresser wasn't the best. it's a bit of work, but i think it's easier and cheaper to do than moving all your stuff. i will do the same when i move to dschool.

that is disgusting

I agree. IF you are going to have it that long you might as well fork out the $.
You never know what or who happened to that bed.. I had a friend buy a bed for $150... only to find out it was infested with bed bugs.

I just buoght a new one and think it was worth it. I'll resell it--but I also kept it clean and covered by a waterproof cover all 3 years.

Craigslist is nice for some things--not so much for others!

My advice is take what you need and bargain shop for the rest of the stuff. With a move like that you mightend up spending just as much taking your own things. Plenty of cheap furniture stores these days!

i've been using it for a year now and it's just fine, thank you 😀

i will actually take the frame with me to dschool (but not the mattress haha - too big!)

But yea, for moving, craigslist is amazing.

you can always buy an air mattress. I don't know how comfortable it'll be but it'll definately make moving a lot easier

I agree with just renting a moving truck. It is what I have always done. It will likely be the cheapest option. If money isn't an issue, then hire a moving company to do it for you.

Does anyone know of a moving/truck company that i can hire to ship my car to another state?

Evaluate the value of your stuff. Then get several quotes from moving companies. Evaluate the cost of moving your stuff as compared to the value of your stuff + Moving costs. Then evaluate how much new things would cost and compare. Chances are you will be better off selling your things and buying new ones. However, some moving companies may offer you a good deal so get as many estimates as possible. Also, you can rent a small trailor from UHaul and tow your things at a low cost and drop it off at your destination city.

As an example, I just went to u-haul website and looked up rates (they have a convenient system of selecting what you need). I selected 14' truck only, moving from Seattle, WA to Ann Arbor, MI (2800 miles). The cost of the truck rental only is $1286 (does not include gas of course).
Gas cost: 2800 miles /10miles/gal = 280 gal*$2.50/gal = $700 at least.
So its at least $2000 to move that far. I would say it would come up to $2500-3000.

Moving from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Pittsburgh, PA - $983 only for truck

2 excellent companies that I have personally used. They don't "resell" your contract to another carrier, like many other shipping companies do. As a result they may be priced higher than some other companies you'll find, but they both have 100% positive ratings.

Golden Key Express: http://goldenkeyexpress.com/auto-transport/
Coast to Coast: http://www.coasttocoastauto.com/

As I said, I've used both (one from Arizona to New York and the other from Utah to New York), they delivered on time, no damages, mileage was the same upon loading, etc.
