MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It has come down to sdsu and Boston u while I wait for the last 2. I really worry about how good the sdsu and uci programs are in comparison to bu. I definitely want to be back in California and I'm not sure if I location during school is worth the sacrifice of a potentially "greater" education and network. I talked to graduates at sdsu and I have yet to be sold. Still haven't heard much about uci. bu is definitely up there in price tag...major worry that makes me want to stay in ca for school.the deadline for sdsu decision is this Friday, and I haven't sent in a response.
Nice! Congrats to the acceptances. I applied to BU, UCLA, UCI, UIC, and UW. So far I've been accepted to BU and UCI, waitlisted at UCLA and I haven't heard back from the other two. I'm in California so in terms of money it's best to stay in SoCal but that most likely means UCI. I know BU is better because it's an older program and more established but I don't know if it'll be worth the amount of money haha. Which schools are you deciding between?

Does anyone know anything about Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai? I'm thinking about applying but I don't know much about their MPH program. I'm interested in a concentration in Epidemiology. Thanks guys!

Wow thanks! I will definitely keep that in mind when I look. I am from Norcal. Pretty nervous about moving to east coast, so I am trying to do all the research ahead of time.
definitely feel free to PM me if you have any questions! Boston is such a great city...no reason to be nervous at all. like I said before, I've lived here for about 2 years now so I can answer a lot of questions about housing, transportation, getting groceries, places to go out etc. 🙂

I am also considering going to BU, but awaiting other schools before I make my final decision. I am also from the West Coast and this was extremely helpful. I will probably PM if I have any questions.
feel free! I'm happy to answer whatever questions you have!

Correct, Haven't heard from the MPH program. I mean I know I applied around January, but come on, this is getting ridiculous. Then they expect us to make a decision within days/weeks of receiving a decision.

Hey! I'm waiting to hear from MMI for the ScM (I submitted the end of January and it was complete Feb 10). I e-mailed the department yesterday to see if I could get a timeline on when I'd hear back since their deadline to apply is April 1 and other programs need to hear back April 15.
I got a reply this morning saying I should hear back next week.

Try e-mailing your department about your MPH app? Everyone seems very nice and responsive. Good luck!

Long time lurker, finally created an account.

Undergrad School: International
Undergrad GPA: 3.51
Major/Minor: Medicine
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): V 140 Q148 A2.5 (very low :-( ). Hopefully my SOP and Recommendations will help.
Experience/Research (please, be brief): a few years as a medical intern, whole lot of volunteer experience in clinical/public health

Applied: UTH - Epi, A&M - Epi, UNT-Epi, LSU - Epi, Tulane - Epi, OU - Epi, USF - Epi (applied 03/01, application sent 03/06)
Accepted:
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

I am worried that I may not get admitted in any of these schools. Anyone else in the same boat? Thanks!

My GPA is similar to yours, my GRE scores aren't too much better than yours, and my experience is minimal. I applied to different concentrations, but I've gotten into every school I've applied to so far. I believe that my SOP and LORs contributed to my acceptances-I'm pretty direct and certain about my goals and made that very clear in my application. Every school and department is different but your application will be reviewed holistically so don't stress out about low numbers!

Yeah, I am going to wait a couple more days then send an email.

Same 🙂 But I applied to Global Health Leadership at USC. I'm a little bummed they will not be sending out decisions until June :/ even if you applied last year which is really late. I've heard great things about SDSU's epi dept as well. A former professor of mine told me how one of her students went and got her mph in epi at the university and right after she graduated got a job at the San Diego Health Dept as an epidemiologist.

Wow, I didn't know USC won't be sending out decisions until June!? That is so late, especially when it's my top choice :'( I was hoping to know before May the latest so I can decide where to move to...

But yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about SDSU so I am leaning towards it. Let me know when you hear back! and good luck!!

Undergrad School: Oregon Institute of Technology, Class of 2013

Applied: Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (this is the only school I applied to)
Accepted: JHSPH via the International Health Department, for an MSPH in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control, I will be completing my second year in the Peace Corps, I was accepted via the application portal on 03/10/2014
Rejected: None
Waitlisted: None

Has anyone else on this thread applied for the same program?

Accepted to University of South Carolina today!

I was accepted everywhere I applied - I definitely didn't expect that (which is partly why I applied to so many places...fear of rejection!) and so that marks the end of hearing back from schools about admission... and the beginning of a very tough decision process!

Of course, I'm still gonna stalk the crap out of this thread 😉

Trying to decide between Columbia for and MPH in Epi and the 1 year MPH at Hopkins. Anyone have any input or suggestions of what to consider? Thanks!

If you feel like you need more experience in your field (Internship, fellowship etc) then Columbia two year program is the way to go, if you feel you have all the experience you need in your field and have an extensive background in your field, then JHU would probably be the way to go...either way, you can't lose

Does anyone know anything about Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai? I'm thinking about applying but I don't know much about their MPH program. I'm interested in a concentration in Epidemiology. Thanks guys!

I went to a visit and here is what I thought:
Pros: small program, great rapport between profs/admin and students, very approachable friendly admin, interesting courses that are a bit different from others, location
Cons: because so small only offer courses once per year, don't help you find practicums, no career services or alumni network, very much a med school first

Congratulations on getting the acceptances! Where all had you applied? Have you decided on the school you wish to join? Good luck!

Congratulations! Great achievement! I am in a similar mind-set to apply to every school SOPHAS would let me ;-)

Good luck in picking the right school.

Congratulations everyone! One small question to those who are choosing Yale School of Public Health, has anyone heard anything from the Financial Aid office? Thanks.

I got a call from them right before my offer of admission last week stating that everything received (I had been bugging them for confirmation). I spoke to Mary, the director of admissions, and she said we should start to hear in "the next few weeks."

Yea I've definitely heard great things about BU but they only gave me 12,000 and while I was happy to get some type of funding I don't think it helps significantly enough for me to move out there. I'm going to try to email some current students or alumni of UCI and see if they have more info!

Thank you! I've been accepted to University of Miami, Texas A&M, Univ Texas, and Colorado. I still have yet to hear from UIC and SDSU. Colorado is probably where I will end up because it's instate tuition for me (can't beat that), I've created a network there and I would pursue the ideal MPA/MPH dual degree which is a good fit for my career goals. But I'm still in process of weighing pros and cons so, who knows what I will decide!

Has anyone else on this thread applied for the same program?

Hi Vabbster!

Congrats!

I applied for the same program, but money wise it's just not feasible compared to my other options. So disappointing, I know they offer a 'scholarship' but that's basically just because most people go and do their research in the second year so they shouldn't be charging us when we're not taking classes. And, perhaps because of the scholarship, they've upped the rest of tuition fees!

I'm guessing if it's the only school you applied for, you'll definitely be going?

Thanks for the reply CG122. I guess I should call them then 🤔

I haven't ruled anywhere out yet, but honestly UCI isn't a front runner at the moment. I haven't heard much about their program besides the fact that it is quite new. I live in Atlanta at the moment, but I grew up on the West Coast and have a lot of respect for UCI as a school and you can't beat the location (Beach+SoCal= 🙂). Right now Emory is definitely one of my top choices because it is local, but it would also be really hard to say no to Harvard and Yale's program has some awesome features. I am still waiting to hear from Florida's PhD program as well, which I am really interested in.

Hi brittmtl,

Thanks for the information. Their website is pretty vague. I've already been accepted to BU, and am waiting to hear from SDSU and Colorado. I kinda want to apply to one or two more programs but I'm not sure if it's worth it. I just like that Icahn isn't super expensive and is in the middle of NYC.

Piece of advice:

So I noticed that a lot of people are wrapping up with acceptance letters and are starting to make THE DECISION. And that might be hard to do...some places you nix like immediately and then there are two left. What to do, what to do. Something that I remember admission directors and staff telling me is FIT. Like I never understood it until I chose the Yale program. Obviously some schools you have to choose from are obviously better than others in the academic dept. But I'm giving this advice assuming that all your choices are more or less equal in that dept. Here are questions I answered when I decided that Yale FIT me: (some are silly but seriously contemplated them)

1. Did i want to live in _____ town/city for the next two years?
2. Do they have a football team? (went to a non-football school the last 4years)
3. How friendly/helpful have the faculty/admission faculty been? (chances are they will be the same once you get there)
4. How expensive is it to live there? Groceries, going out to eat, rent, plane ticket i.e.:

And whatever other type of questions you need to consider when it comes to your happiness. its grad school but i think we should all enjoy it as much as undergrad. maybe in a different way but this whole process was exciting and nerve wracking but don't want the tempo to drop because you hate the school/environment that looked soo good on paper.

Hope this helps even just one person!

Hey guys,

I'm trying to decide between BU (epidemiology concentration) and Brown's MPH program. Thoughts?

Has anyone applied to UCSF's Global Health Sciences Program?! I interviewed there a week and a half ago and was wondering if anyone had heard back or has any information on statistics?

I was very highly considering Mount Sinai given the price and that you can complete the program in one year, but the clincher for me was the total absence in career services which I personally think is essential in a MPH program!! If you feel confident embarking on the job search alone, though, I think it is a great program. I think in 5-10 years they will have more resources, but as of now they're limited. A student told me that only two weeks ago they began a service sending e-mails every week with possible jobs of interest, but not personalized, only a small sample. It's possible there will be more by next year but who knows.

Thank you for sharing this! If you don't mind me asking, what program/concentration are you in at Yale and which schools were you deciding between last year?

I have narrowed my list down to Yale, Emory, and Hopkins, and I will be visiting all 3 on admitted student days in the next few weeks. I will be studying infectious disease epidemiology. I have gotten the sense that Yale seems like a really good fit for me (as you said) and my research interests align perfectly with some of the faculty, but I feel like Emory and Hopkins may have more direct ties to places I want to work like CDC and NIH, so I am very torn.

Thank you so much for any input you can provide!

I also got the award. It helps a little bit, but it's so $$ still. It's a good idea to email either current students or recent graduates about the program.

Oh wow, you really can complete the program in one year? It really sucks that they don't have career services. The cost of the program would totally make up for the high cost of living and I've always wanted to live in NYC :/

Thank you,

Yeah, the tuition prices are a bit daunting I must admit. But their program fits my wants and needs very well, this is why it was the only school/program I applied to in the public health field... My original goal is to go to medical school (which is one of my options at the moment), but I am reconsidering that choice with being accepted to JH. The thought of completing this program at JH, as well as serving in the Peace Corps, is very appealing to me personally. Maybe I will return to get an MD in three years, or not... Have you decided on a school/program for this fall? Did you only apply to Epidemiology related programs? How does JH compare to the other MPH schools for which you applied (price wise)?

Hi everyone! I gave up my spot at Columbia finally. You have to wait until you're added to their online system to fill out the decision form. Anyway, if you're on the waitlist I hope it goes to you!

I'm waiting to hear from them. I think I should send them an email. I dunno my status.

Hey @HannahR I got accepted into the Healthcare management program. And it was a decision between UMich, UMinn, and JHU. All of which were great programs but Yale for me was the perfect fit for a number of reasons. Yale faculty and admissions counsel were really helpful in making my decision. Even though they aren't ranked in the top 10 or 5 it deter me because I know that the name Yale carries a lot of weight on its own. Also, I didn't want to live in a city center like Baltimore/Minneapolis but on the other hand Ann Arbor was way too small. New Haven seem like the perfect fit as far as size. It has the small town feel of have a tight knit community but you won't get bored because there is stuff to do. And NYC is not too far away (1.5hr on the train).

Emory does have a special relationship with the CDC and JHU with NIH. But I don't think proximity will discount you if you were to decide to go to Yale. Like think back to my questions. When I got my acceptance from Yale I was immediately decided but I held back because i didn't want to not take into account great aspects of the other schools. And how much easier would it be to get in touch with a professor at yale who might want research assistants compared with people at CDC/NIH who are focused on the work they are doing. Depending on where you are in your career Yale might be a better fit because the guidance from a professor. They are teaching you and you are getting experience under their wing.

Yes, the one year possibility is absolutely attractive!

Has anyone applied to UCSF's Global Health Sciences Program?! I interviewed there a week and a half ago and was wondering if anyone had heard back or has any information on statistics?

I have heard from UCSF GHS. I was interviewed 02/10 and was accepted into the program ~2 weeks later. Hopefully, you will be hearing from them in the same timeline!

Their website says they interview 30% of applicants and from the total applicant pool accept 25%. You have good chances if you have already received an interview and are a good fit for the program.

I accepted my offer on Friday, so maybe we will be future classmates! Good luck!

UMich didn't send me any notification about Fin Aid via email, but I got anxious and checked Wolverine - saw my Fin Aid packet and nearly passed out!
For me (OOS) they gave me $33K in LOANS..... 😱

I will be :drowning: in debt.... but at least I'm chasing my dreams...?

Congrats for UCSF! It's a great school and the Inner Sunset neighborhood is fantastic! (I live really close by campus)

Sadly, it looks more and more like that will be the case for most MPH students. Unless we hear back in advance that we will receive a merit award.

You could look into being a TA for an undergrad class (depending on your undergrad major). My roommate went to UM SPH and decided to TA for an undergrad intro bio class, she got full OOS tuition covered for both years. Yeah, it might be 10 hrs/week extra but it's totally worth not being in debt. Just my 2 cents. I don't think it's a good idea to be in a ton in debt for our field (unless you plan on working in a high salary career like consulting or pharma/biotech, then maybe it's worth it).

oof, I had that same exact feeling when I opened the packet 🙁

I agree with this. I am very, very interested in getting a GSI if I decide to attend UMich..does your roommate have any insight into how competitive these are? they sound scarce

I'm not sure, she graduated a few years ago. I would reach out to them and ask how to go about looking for one. I know at Berkeley, they said to just email the professors for the classes I'm interested in GSIing for and ask if there is a position available for the fall. The sooner the better. You can probably look up the Fall 2013 course schedule, my guess is most of the professors will be the same for Fall 2014. Good luck!

Check out umjobs.org and click graduate student appointments.

Also you might want to check various undergraduate department websites to see if they have GSI applications up. I would check the biology department soon because I think their deadline for fall 2014 is March 15. You can go to the UMich biology website and click the tab that says careers and find the application.

Rejected by Emory. Aaaarggghhhh. Now waiting for Columbia, then make my final decision.

Just heard back from UCLA Epi, however my admission status hasn't been updated in the system. Just received an email! Now to decide UC Berkeley or UCLA?
