MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did they give you a deadline to submit SIR? I applied in November but still haven't heard anything... I wonder if they already filtered me out without notifying me :'(

@KCC1223 I emailed UCI and asked about my application because I was getting impatient. They responded within 2 hours with an acceptance e-mail! You should just email or call them because I feel like if I didn't email them they would've taken a lot longer.

Ugh me too :bang: think they probably forgot about me after they tossed me to the rejection pile.

Here is an email from Cal's HSB department...hope this helps...a little.

Sent Monday 3/3:

"Unfortunately we are still in the admission process, and haven't sent information out to everyone just yet. I am hoping over the next few weeks we will be sending out more information to applicants regarding their status. Thanks again for your patience. It is definitely appreciated."

Accepted to Columbia's Department of Population and Family Health Accelerated MPH!!!! :soexcited:New York here I come.

P.S: I didn't get an email from Harvard today (and almost everyone who did, got in), so I'm guessing it wont be good....right?
I am also wondering the same. However, apart from a couple of people, I still don't see many putting in an acceptance for HPM SM2. 🙁

Congratulations! Did you apply to the epi track? Also, did you email Stephanie Uiga? I emailed her last month and she told me they were hoping to notify students by April. I am just really impatient right now :'( I'll probably email again though!

Just curious, are you considering UCI? It's a pretty new program. I would love to go if I get in, but I wonder if they have good research opportunities...?!

Man...had dinner at a restaurant in Berkeley just now and I'm pretty sure I sat diagonally from Dr. Lee Riley, Chair of the Infectious Disease Division at UC Berkeley School of Public Health. :uhno: I wish I'd had the guts to introduce myself and ask him about my application LOL

It seems like HSB has been notifying students as decisions are made. I applied to infectious diseases and I haven't heard anything at all. Thanks for the info though! If HSB is still going through applications it's likely IDV is too 🙂

I hope it is the case for MCH too! Thanks for sharing @antaresoul

I've been accepted into UCSF's MSGH program (Yay!), so at least I know I will be staying in the Bay Area!

I'm definitely considering UCI because it will save me a lot of money. I got waitlisted at UCLA (not sure what my chances are) and got into BU but since I live in Socal I don't know if it will be worth it. I know UCI has a new program but it's a great school and I'm positive there will be great research opportunities! Let me know if you hear back!

That's awesome! My deciding factors range...one is that I already live in Boston and my boyfriend goes to BU's medical school so it's really convenient in that sense (the BUSPH and BUSM are on the same campus). Boston as a city is AWESOME and I would be sad to leave. I also got a merit award from BU and while it's not a ton, it will help make a difference. Also, Boston's rankings have been climbing over the past years and so I feel really good about that. If you're not from Boston and have questions about the area I'd be happy to help out!
Do you have any suggestion for housing? I am coming from West Coast and will be attending BU. 🙂

Yay... Got Harvard MPH in SBS, my top choice school. :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:
All acceptances from JHU/ Emory/ Texas-Austin/ Boston and now Harvard and Harvard it is.

Congrats, when did you get your acceptance...today?

I'm anxiously waiting for Columbia and Emory. I wanna start sending rejection letters. Lol. Please anyone with a rejection letter should forward it to me so that I will use the same language in sending my decisions. Like: Dear JHSPH, I am happy to receive your acceptance letter. Unfortunately, the list of schools I got accepted to is highly competitive and I don't think you fit into my career plans. Etc etc. .. Lol.

Do you have any suggestion for housing? I am coming from West Coast and will be attending BU. 🙂

Congrats! I definitely have suggestions...a lot of people like to move to Allston/Brighton area because it's much cheaper and on a map is looks close but I don't recommend it. It's an hour commute on the T and incredibly inconvenient. I highly suggest spending a little bit more and moving closer, either to the South End, Fenway/Kenmore, or Back Bay. South Boston is fine too, but it's not super convenient by public transportation. Dorchester and Roxbury are also close and cheap but they're not quite as safe. Start looking for a place now, no joke.

DO NOT bring a car. I can't emphasize that enough. You'll hate your life!

I live in the South End now and I split my rent with my boyfriend so we each pay $800, heat and hot water included (always look for that). Roommates are the way to go!

Where on the West Coast are you from? My BF and I both went to school in LA and he's from Santa Monica

Definitely agree with egzzz on the South End thing! Allston/Brighton are only really convenient if you're at the main campus, which the Public Health school is not. Dorchester and Roxbury are also sketchy, there are definitely nicer parts but I'd be extremely cautious if you don't know the area at all. I would look at bus routes too, the major bus lines in Boston are very reliable.

Since Boston's so student driven though, most leases start on September 1 so be prepared for moving day to be a nightmare - if you're renting a moving company, book ASAP and start checking out places as soon as you can!

Congratulations! Yale all the way. Are you going to be at the open house? Sorry if you already answered it. I was just excited to see someone who was more decidedly choosing Yale

If you don't mind me asking, who did you speak to exactly? And was he/she part of the fin aid department?
She was in the Financial aid department.. her name was Nayadet Diaz de Breton.

Thanks! Yeah, the #13 ranking seems to dissuade a lot of people, but I toured all my schools in January and had an outstanding impression of Yale. I don't know if I'm going the admitted students day.. I live in Oregon, another flight to NY & train to New Haven might be more than my wallet can handle (although grad school in general is more than my wallet can handle.. fingers crossed for a decent financial aid package). Are you going? What department are you in?

Ironically yesterday I was on a train with no wifi, so I wasn't obsessingly refreshing my e-mail, but when I came home I got first disappointing news: wait list at Yale 🙁 It was tempered by an acceptance to UBC (Vancouver) though 🙂

I spent the week visiting the New York area schools I was highly considering (Columbia, NYU and Mount Sinai) and I think I'm going to choose Columbia!

Anyone else think they're going to accept Columbia SMS?

I know! But #13 I think is shocking bc you'd expect it to be higher bc it's YALE lol. It was my number 1 choice after talking to a recruiter and the dept. head of my program.
I feel you on the wallet crunch though. Coming from Chicago is a bit closer but I'm still in school and have been to my Friday class 3x this semester(out of 8weeks).
On the other hand, I want to go to meet people and more importantly potential roommates. But seeing how I've nixed all my other choices I don't wanna go bc I'm decided I'll be in new haven in the fall anyways.
I got accepted into the healthcare management program. You're health policy right?

ps: I don't skip class I'm a student athlete and we leave for competition on Fridays usually lol

Thank you! I'm sure you'll receive the same news 🙂 I applied to the Environmental Health track so the departments probably vary in the timelines but I would just email them anyway. April is way too late! And yes, I emailed Stephanie

Good luck with UCLA! You never know what can happen 😉
I live in SoCal too! So UCI would be really convenient or SDSU (still waiting...) or USC (still waiting)... haha... I am just so tired of waiting :'( Did you apply anywhere else?

Congrats! I'm on the edge about Columbia as well. Can you elaborate some more about why you're picking Columbia? How was your visit? Did you get to interact with any professors?

Just got the Email from UC Berkeley HSB. It was a rejection but it really didn't matter because I made the decision to not attend a long time ago.

I think I'm dead set on Columbia SMS... so excited.
How was your visit?? What made you choose Columbia over the others?
How are you dealing with the financial panic?... could use someone who can relate to talk to! 🙂

OMG I just got the decision email from HSPH but I'm too scared to open it. 🙁 I just noticed on Gradcafe that everyone was getting rejections today. I'm such a wuss. 😕

Yeah... its depressing. I refreshed that page and there were literally 8 rejections in a row

For those of you still waiting to hear from NYU, I received an acceptance letter with merit scholarship this morning. On Monday I had received a letter saying they were taking longer than normal to release admission decisions.

Also just received my admission decision from UC Berkeley MCH - rejected. Slightly disappointing but I am relieved to finally know what the decision is. Not sure if the program I applied to was the best fit for me as it appeared to not have a large global health focus (UCB no longer has a global health certificate).

Now that I have finally heard from all of the schools I have applied to it is finally time to move to the decision process!!! No more waiting!

Finally....finally heard from UC Berkeley HSB, got a rejection on a lovely Friday morning. :lame:
I think I knew (and they knew) I never felt like I could quite see myself at Berkeley campus...

*shrug* At least now I have a clearer picture of where my life may lead in a few months and not check my mail desperately every 5 mins.

Congrats to everyone on their acceptances so far!

Yup, it was a rejection all right. 😛 Totally expected but still hurts a bit cuz HSPH was the only reason I was applying to MPH programs. Oh well I still got my 2nd option (Columbia), so I guess it's all good. 🙂

Got rejected from Columbia which sucks...I really wanted to go there and got wait listed at NYU. NYU doesn't have the program I'm mostly interested in anyway so I guess it doesn't matter. What a day.

Exactly the same for me as well. We might just be future classmates at Columbia!

Anyone going to Berkeley for sure? I sent in my SIR and SLR and created my email. However the myfinaid page on bearfacts is coming up blank! Anyone have the same problem?

Exactly the same for me as well. We might just be future classmates at Columbia!
I'm also rejected by HSPH ( a couple weeks ago) and may choose Columbia depending on how my other non-MPH applications go. It seems like a lot of us are using Columbia as Plan B if HSPH or JHU does not work out (I kinda feel bad for Columbia but by all means Columbia is amazing too).

Thank you, I will definitely let you know when I hear back 🙂 Just emailed Stephanie again! By the way, is your status changed to accepted on the UCI application tracker? I keep checking it... and it still says under review.... ahh...

Awesome! Hope she gets back to you soon. My status hasn't changed on the UCI application tracker haha which is annoying. I used to check that application tracker multiple times a day!

I was actually going to apply to USC too but I got lazy because it wasn't the SOPHAS app. Hope you hear back from SDSU and USC soon too though! I feel like you will be notified next week since it's already the 2nd week of March.

I applied to UIC and University of Washington but they haven't gotten back to me...so at this point it's looking like UCI unless UCLA decides to pull me off the waitlist haha

what concentration did you apply for NYU?

Did anyone hear from Columbia today? Acceptances , rejections , wait list ? I'm getting so anxious. Deadlines are fast approaching and I feel like I may not have enough time to weigh my options.

So happy for everyone that has decided. Send out those rejections to the schools you won't attend. Lol

Edit: never mind. I saw the line that says all MPH students will get a follow up email about scholarships by fourth week of March.

Anybody heard from Harvard financial aid office yet? I am an international student so I don't qualify for federal aid. But I was hoping that they'd let me know about scholarships also within their "three business day" policy. I got an email today that says they weren't able to offer me financial assistance (which, I suspected given my international status) but that the scholarships decisions are still being made. That means I still have a chance, right? I called them to clarify but couldn't get through and it's the end of the day on Friday now...

Hi everyone! Wondering if anyone else has applied to the SMS MS degree at Columbia... I haven't heard back from it yet but the program seems extremely small, there are only two students currently in the program now.

Anyone hear anything from UNC at Chapel Hill? I applied to their MPH-RD Residential program and when I called them on Monday (2/24) they said they were sending out decisions by the end of the day but I still haven't heard anything... :lame:
Have you heard back yet from the MPH-RD program yet? I applied there too and have yet to hear anything, no idea why they're taking so long!

So I've been lurking for a while now, and finally decided to post...

If I had to choose between BU and Columbia, I'd pick Columbia. About NYC, the school of pubic health is located at the CU Medical Center in Washington Height. It's still in Manhattan but north of the main campus. Washington Heights has MUCH cheaper rent than lower Manhattan but still expensive. Living in Wash heights would be the most convenient but Harlem and the Bronx are still pretty close. I've heard of a lot of students who live in other boroughs and use the commute to read/study. You can anywhere by train/bus. I've been accepted to Columbia but I'm still waiting for Berkeley. Good luck!

Hey, congrats for Harvard HPM!! At what time did you hear from them today? As Friday approaches, I am getting super nervous about it all!
Hey I got the mail on 6th March 11 30 am I guess.. dont worry you will get soon I submitted my app on 10th march ... all the best

You submitted your app on 03/10/2014? you mean like next Monday? LOL

Yes we just might be, 🙂 although I am having 2nd thoughts of "is worth taking loans?" at the moment. Maybe I should just be thankful for getting in at Columbia with my horrendous GRE score (149Q, 152V) or maybe I should just give GRE another shot and reapply to HSPH next year (although I'm not getting any younger 😵). I guess I'll just have to wait for the financial detail email and then I'll have a more clearer picture of how much loan I need.
