Hi everyone,

I was curious if anyone knows anything about the MPH programs at CSU Northridge and CSU Fullerton? I been accepted to both and wanted to get more information about both programs before I made a decision.

I don't know much about CSUN's MPH program but I believe it's not accredited. I went to CSUF for undergrad in health science and loved all the professors there. They are really helpful and very willing to work with students. I have a friend who is doing her MPH there right now and she has pretty close relationship with faculty members as well. It's a great school 🙂

Actually, according to CEPH's website, CSUN is an accredited program (http://ceph.org/accredited/#programs)... that being said, I still think CSUF is by far the better program.

I am an international medical graduate - completed residency in Obgyn. I want to pursue MPH epi/biostats. I want to know the Math prerequisites for biostat program. The last I studied Math was at high school..I just want to to take some courses if it is so.

I've searched the forums for my questions, but couldn't find anything.

How come some schools, for an MPH degree, accept applications from students straight out of undergrad, while others require an MD degree, and even two years of experience in some cases? Are MPH degrees not equivalent at any institution, roughly speaking?

They are equivalent, but some schools have different requirements for who can obtain an MPH and who can't. That's just how it is. Harvard and Hopkins require two years or an advanced degree while most other schools don't.

Basically why I bothered to post this is to help reassure others. I've got 3 F's on my college transcripts and took 6 years to graduate. My GPA is less than 3.0. Write a good essay, and get involved outside of school, do well on your GRE and things can be forgiven (at least from GWU apparently hahaha). I thought my undergraduate GPA would haunt me till the day I died!

I am so relieved that you posted this because I was about to get discouraged. I'm already going down the global/public health route because Nursing school wasn't what I thought it was. I'm a little worried still since I'm close to graduating undergrad and haven't done any research yet.

I am so relieved that you posted this because I was about to get discouraged. I'm already going down the global/public health route because Nursing school wasn't what I thought it was. I'm a little worried still since I'm close to graduating undergrad and haven't done any research yet.

I am relieved to see another nursing person on here. Nursing school was also not what I expected. I was an RN at a major hospital here in DC for almost 2 years but I found it's not what I want to do. I've realized my passion is for research, preventative care, and problem solving. That's why I want to get an MPH in epidemiology. Can someone tell me if I have any chance at getting into any school?
Undergrad Major: Bachelors in Nursing
GPA: 3.62
GRE: haven't taken yet, hope to be in the 50th% for verbal and quantitative
Experience: 2 years experience RN on a busy Med/Surg unit at a major DC hospital. 1 month at a pediatricians office. 2 years as a private visiting RN to mothers and newborns in the home. Now I'm not even doing nursing because I wasn't getting enough hours at that previous job. I had to take a job nannying because I needed the money to pay rent. I know that public health is what I want to do. But will my lack of experience in public health hurt my application so much that I won't get in?
I've been applying to lots of jobs, internships, etc. for public health; it's just very hard to get anything right now. Thank you in advance for your help!

I did...and I did HORRIBLE! 😱😕🙁 V: 144, Q:149 (yikes!!)
But I deserved it. That's what I get for literally cramming 3 weeks before.. and already lacking a diverse vocabulary.

It was SO overwhelming.. I didn't even write a complete essay on the Issue portion, and I got a time cut-off on a few sections..automatic WRONGS!

OH WELL..
I'm not even going to try to take it again...
no use, because I knowingly suck at standardized testing. hahha

SO, fingers crossed my high GPA will help me.
Unfair they judge us on testings anyways 🙁

I couldn't agree more! I hate standardized tests! .... I got 147 on both sections, took my GRE yesterday. Still waiting on the writing score...timing was a major issue for me.

So I've been a long term lurker and I'm not really sure what to do with myself as I'm waiting for acceptances. I have a low GPA and average scores but I really want to get more medical/health experience and ultimately an MPH. I'm pretty worried and slightly convinced that I won't get in anywhere, but nevertheless here are my stats:

Experience/Research (please, be brief): Medical Assistant Certified/Work Experience, Hospice and Palliative Care experience, certified administrator but worked as an administrative assistant for elderly care facility (2 years), 1000+ hours of hospital/physical therapy aide hands on experience, facilitator/counselor for a company doing case management for disabled adults, bilingual, medical aide/supervisor for LGBT pride festival, translator/educator for a community health clinic, lived abroad for 9 years in Southeast/East Asia and South America, student representative for a medical club for the college of sciences student council, research on effects of stride lengths on oxygen consumption (undergrad), taken some public health classes (epi, health foundations, hiv/aids).

I applied to SDSU, CSU San Marcos, and was going to apply to one school in Canada but was way behind on my letter of intent so I let it go. I didn't consider applying anywhere else because my stats are low in the test and GPA department as well as $$$!

Any word from CSU San Marcos?? I applied there as well and am really wanting to hear about other peoples experience since it's a newer program. Thanks!

Hey everyone! I was just accepted into George Washington MPH Health Promotion program 🙂 they emailed me this morning. I e-submitted my SOPHAS application on September 25th, it was verified October 17th, and GW let me know that day that it was complete. Good luck everyone!!!!

I am unable to decide on which concentration to pursue. I am an intnl student and would require a h1 b sponsorship to work. Can some one guide which concentration is better to get a decent paying job epi or hpm. I am looking at going back to pharma or join a hospital.
