MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello everyone,
I have been trying to look for forums with low gpa/gre but I cannot seem to find some:
GPA: 3.03
GRE: 154Q, 145V, 4W
Undergrad University: Purdue University
Undergrad Major: Movement and Sports Science
Undergrad Minor: Organizational and Leadership Supervision

I was a pre-med major for 3 years then recently switched to MHA. I have a lot of work experience in a hospital as a rehabilitation technician as well as worked two years as an affiliate marketer overviewing 200 customers and affiliates and working hand in hand with top income earners. I am applying to:

Virginia Commonwealth
Ohio State
Columbia
Saint Louis
University of Pittsburgh
Penn State
Rush
George Washington
Johns Hopkins
Medical University of South Carolina.

I was wondering if there is any hope at all for me in this application process because I have not yet be able to submit my application due to my references not responding to my emails. If you guys have any advice at all whatsoever for me please help because I am in desperate need of it and do not know who to turn to. Thank you again.

Most of your schools have a deadline of January 15th. Since you haven't applied yet, you are really cutting it close and you still have to verify your application and that could take weeks. As long as you apply before the deadline on sophas, you should be fine. If you are really hoping to start in Fall, I would definitely apply soon. Most importantly you need to keep contacting your recommenders, because in order for your application to be marked complete you need at least 2 recommendations. Good Luck!!!!!

Hmm. That's odd. I thought all schools required it 😳. Well then I would suggest probably just getting your immunizations again if you have no other way of finding your records. Chances are some of them are expired anyways.

The only required immunizations for my undergrad was hepatitis B, but that was only for students 19 years old or younger. I started my undergrad in my early 20's so that's probably why I didn't have to get any additional vaccinations.

I'm probably due for some boosters right now anyway, so I'll get them in a few months 🙁

I agree with spelmanfam. Get your app in ASAP; you can submit before your letters come in. There are some low GPA/GRE threads in the grad cafe public health forums. http://forum.thegradcafe.com/forum/59-public-health/

If your recommenders haven't responded, that needs to be the top priority because SOPHAS won't verify your app until 2 have submitted their letters. Your very close second priority would be writing a great SOP that outlines your direct fit with the field of study, and customizing it for each school. You can submit your app with only 1 school selected, so you can add SOPs and schools as you go while your app is being verified. Typically schools consider the app on time if it is submitted to SOPHAS by the deadline, GRE scores and transcripts have arrived, and 2 or 3 rec letters are in, but it does vary by school.

Hope that helps - good luck!

Welcome!

Below is a copy of my list. I applied to a lot of "reach" schools:
Applied: Columbia (11/12), Emory (11/17), U of Florida (11/16), U of Pittsburgh (11/20), Washington University (11/21), Johns Hopkins (11/23), Virginia Commonwealth (11/25) (All MPH Epidemiology), Harvard (12/3) (SM 80)
SOPHAS Validated 11/19
Good Luck!! 🙂

I am really confused with the SOPHAS application process. Can someone please clarify the process for me?

I am applying to SDSU and the SOPHAS deadline is February 15th. When I looked on the SOPHAS website, they recommend e-submitting my application at least 4 weeks prior to the deadline because it can take a while to verify the application. The SDSU website claims that the application and supporting materials are due February 15th. Does this mean that I need to have my application verified/mailed by February 15th? Or do I just have to e-submit my application no later than the February 15th deadline?

Also, I plan on taking the GRE one more time January 22nd. According to ETS, it takes about 10 business days for the scores to be received. If I retook the GRE on this particular date my scores would be ireceived before the deadline, but can I e-submit my application before my scores are received?

Thanks in advance for the help!

You need to get in touch with your references ASAP. This is vital. I would go ahead and finish the rest of your application and submit it so that it's ready for whenever they submit your LoRs.

Oh ok. Yeah, I think immunization requirements vary by state. I was required to have MMR, tetanus, chickenpox, and hepatitis B vaccinations.

I can't speak for SDSU specifically, but most schools only require that your application is submitted by the deadline (also, SOPHAS no longer mails applications as schools can access them electronically). If you are very concerned, I would contact SDSU directly to ask them.

Yes, you can definitely submit your application before your GRE scores are received by SOPHAS.

Hi... I just looked at the SDSU website and it says that you must have your application submitted to SOPHAS by February 15th and they want you to also have all your required documentation by the deadline (February 15th). So, before that date you need to have your application verified and marked complete on SOPHAS. In regards to SOPHAS, you can esubmit your application before you have your recommendations and before you have your test scores, but your application won't be marked complete until you have at least 2 recommendations. SOPHAS no longer mails the applications, so as soon as your application is complete your designated schools are immediately able to see it. You should e submit your application as soon as you have all of the mandatory sections completed, When you retake your GRE, your scores will automatically be added to your application as long as you choose the right ETS code for each school you're applying to. Good Luck!!!!

Ugh, I keep refreshing my email. Today marks 5 weeks since my SOPHAS application was verified...I'm so anxious.

Ugh, I keep refreshing my email. Today marks 5 weeks since my SOPHAS application was verified...I'm so anxious.

I imagine at least a couple of schools should start letting you know by the second week in January!

This holiday season has been so hectic and draining, I'm so glad it's finally over. Not only can I get back to a normal sleep schedule and give my liver a break, but I can finally look forward to seeing new updates here. Good luck, everyone!

The holidays were crazy this year. My liver is definitely looking forward to a break!

Hopefully people start hearing from schools again soon. I know that I've begun anxiously awaiting mine again.

I think next week is going to start the true ramp-up to max anxiety for many of us. I'm just excited to know that there has to be some movement on decisions happening soon and my daily checking of OPUS will actually serve a purpose.

Yep... Emory will be next for me and then nothing until at least mid-February. It looks like, at least from grad cafe, Emory typically sends decisions in late Jan to mid-Feb, though I'm not sure when those people submitted their apps.

I've been purposely avoiding OPUS since right before Christmas. I figured they wouldn't be letting us know anything and I was trying not to stress myself out (hint: it didn't work)!

Yeah, Emory is pretty consistent with releasing decisions in late January. I am really hoping to hear something positive from them!

Finally making this official. Low GPA and no exceptional experience so I'm not too optimistic. I'll be insanely happy if I get in literally anywhere. I tried to only apply to schools that felt thoroughly worth going into debt for so I don't really have any "safety" schools. Planning on submitting to a few European schools in the coming weeks as well. Wish me luck!

Undergrad School: West coast state school
Undergrad GPA: 3.068 (SOPHAS, higher than transcripts)
Major/Minor: Human Physiology, Biological Anthropology (double major)
GRE (including date taken): (Taken June 2014) V-166, Q-158, AW-4.0
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
-Chemistry intern, major science museum (3 months)
-Patient coordinator, low-cost medical clinic (1 year)
-Nursing unit volunteer at a hospital, post-op oncology (4 months)
-Organ donation nonprofit ambassador (8 months)
-Teaching English abroad (August-present)

Applied: Oregon/OHSU (epi), UCLA (epi), University of Texas at Houston (epi), George Washington (epi), Vanderbilt (global health), Boston (epi), Emory (global epi/epi), Tulane (epi), Columbia (epi)

I think your experience is pretty good! Your GRE scores are great too, so they help counter any questions about your GPA, which isn't terrible - and above 3.0. This is without us even knowing your recommendations or SOP, so don't get psyched out! I think exceptional experiences are completely subjective anyways.

Didn't have time to post this until now but.... Got my first acceptance to Tulane in mid December as I was sitting in the airport waiting to board a flight to Thailand and then I got my second acceptance to U Mich on Dec 24 (Asia time) as I was again waiting to board another plane to Vietnam! Maybe I should take some more trips... 🙂 Happy holidays, everyone!

just getting into one of these schools would honestly be amazing...but I'm feeling somewhat pessimistic because of the low gpa (too many involvements/having to work throughout college). I'm very interested in community and international health, due to a lot of time spent abroad, and mentioned that in the SOP

You have great GRE scores and very relevant work experience - I'm positive you'll get in at least one school, if not multiple! Good luck 🙂

I received an email from Emory on the 31st which sounds promising but I don't know.

"I’ve just reviewed your application to Rollins and look forward to making your acquaintance. If you would like to Skype with me or with current students, let me know. Despite GRE scores, you have an impressive application. You’ve learned a lot in Ethiopia and Kyrgystan and your choice of academic program here is right on target."

So I assume that's an acceptance or at least a good sign?

Wow that is confusing!!! Does Emory use a portal that you can check whether it says you are accepted or not? In either case, looks promising and I would try and set up something with current students if they give you that opportunity!

That definitely seems like a good sign. Have you checked Opus?

Sounds like a great sign! Have you checked your OPUS portal?

Did anybody else receive an e-mail like this? I haven't heard a word from them since they sent out the OPUS login.

I've contacted the person who emailed me about setting up a skype meeting. I did check Opus once I saw that email, but nothing new. I'll keep you all posted if I hear anything more.

If I may ask, what concentration did you apply to?

Is anyone else super amped for the weekend to be over and admissions offices to open back up?!
Me!! I just wish Columbia would open sooner. Apparently they're off pretty much all of January so that's why they don't send out decisions till February.

I called Emory today and they said I should expect to hear something back in a week or two! I applied for the Global health concentration.

Eagerly waiting for a response!

I wouldn't worry too much, sometimes experience and SOP's can make up for mediocre scores! Plus, your scores aren't bad at all. Three acceptances at this point is incredible, good luck with the rest of them!

Do not be discouraged! I too have a pretty low GPA (2.75) and so far I've been accepted to Temple, Drexel and UMass for MPH Epi! Your experience will help you out plenty! I think that's what made my application somewhat attractive 🙂

Haven't been on here in a while because of the holidays. I was invited for an interview with the MCH dept at UNC last week. I had no idea they even offered that. Does anyone know what to expect or what this might mean chances-wise?

Haven't heard from anyone else unfortunately.

Any one else receive this email from Columbia's HPM department?

"Thank you for your application to the Department of Health Policy & Management (HPM) at Columbia University. We have enjoyed reviewing your submissions, and we are looking forward to putting together a dynamic cohort of students. As a part of the admission process HPM is conducting informal interviews to learn more about you and also answer any questions you may have about the program. Over the next few weeks a current student in the department will be contacting you via email to schedule a phone call. They will ask you to talk a bit about your background and interest in healthcare policy and management, and specifically our MHA program at the Mailman School of Public Health

We look forward to talking with you!"

If so, does anyone know what to expect and if there is an actual formal in person interview?

thank you!

Has anyone who applied to the University of Arizona received any form of communication from them? It's been a month since I submitted SOPHAS and their additional grad app and I haven't heard anything.

Hey everyone! To anyone who can reply, I would love some advice on my chances...I am interested in only Health Promotion, Community Health, etc. programs and I hope I can get in somewhere because I have a pretty low GPA. I had some health problems sophomore year and my grades show it. However, I have a positive trend in my grades, with my last semester of senior year being a Deans List student. I have not calculated by SOPHAS yet, that GPA below is from my university transcript. Let me know what you guys think! Am I reaching too much?

Undergrad School: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

Undergrad School: Chapman University (small private in southern California)
Undergrad GPA: 3.1-ish (life/physical science ~2.6; non science ~3.7) 2 semesters left, fall will be included on apps.
Major/Minor: Health Sciences: Pre-PA track, minors in Psychology and in Sociology
GRE: Took 10/3/14. UPDATE! final scores- V:149, Q:159, Writing:4.5
Experience/Research:
~ 1 year volunteer at children's hospital
~ 1 year internship at hospital with hands on patient comfort care experience, along with small leadership position in program
~ group research project presented at my school's undergraduate research fair (related to Maternal/Child Health)
Plan to Apply: USC, Boston, Tulane, Colorado, Nebraska, George Washington U, Saint Louis U, U of Arizona, U North Texas, and U South Florida. These are all the maternal/child/family health concentrations available (that I could find at least!). Probably CSULB and CSUF too for general MPH as they are local and inexpensive... back up plan!

Questions:

~ Any other maternal/child/family health people out there?! Doesn't seem to be many of us...
~ Also, the minimums for USC are V:153 and Q:144, so my verbal is too low... Anyone think this will this be a problem at other schools considering my Q score?
~ Any advice on finding internships/part time jobs related to maternal/child/family health? Location- OC/LA. (note: still a full time undergrad!)
P.S. I know my GPA and experience isn't stellar. I'm not ashamed! It's still decent and I've worked hard! Must admit that poor health can get in my way... but I'd feel awkward telling schools that!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE, WE CAN ALL DO THIS! 🙂 STAY POSITIVE!
UAB has a maternal and child health concentration under the healthcare organization department-- you may want to check it out!

Seriously? I wish this were federal law for all schools, all levels, public, private, whatever.

OH, THIS JUST OCCURRED TO ME - I feel like this may have been mentioned elsewhere, but I wanted to go all PSA on you guys who are applying to GW. You've probably seen this in your dealings with them as well.

If you are under the age of 26, DC law requires students in the district to have an up-to-date immunization record with proof of the following vaccinations (pulled this list off American U website, but it's the same throughout the district): http://www.american.edu/ocl/healthcenter/Immunization-FAQs.cfm

This does count for private and public higher education institutions. Definitely do not neglect staying on top of this if you are choosing GW. This summer I wanted to take ONE community college class in DC and this was a major pain in my backside. I ended up not needing to take the class, but I probably wouldn't have been able to anyways considering all the delays I had in locating my records, actually getting them from previous out-of-state physicians, finding out they were incomplete or poorly kept, oh - and getting the actual immunizations. My small solace is that I've just turned 26 and am freeeeeeeeee. Oh well, I'm up-to-date on my immunizations now. 😛😀

If so, does anyone know what to expect and if there is an actual formal in person interview?

thank you!

Interesting. I didn't get anything from them, but I applied to the Epi program. I would take it as a good sign!
