MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Friday will be a big day, it always is because admission officers don't have to deal with phone calls until Monday, which is a huge HR day. I wouldn't be surprised if many of you receive your decision from Emory on Friday. Best of luck!

I just left my bf of 6 years. I'm 28. I can hear my biological clock ticking. Luckily I can also see that in the past 6 months I've killed two different cacti, so ha! My dog is enough. IVF exists for a reason.

Your dog (I'm assuming the one in your photo) is adorable!

May I ask how long the process took? My application was verified on December 9th, and the confirmation email was sent on December 18th. They said it could take up to 90 days, but I'm hoping that it'll be a bit shorter.

Tips for future applicants:

-Any northeasters that may have participated in Syracuse U's SUPA or Project Advance where you received college credit in high school, be sure to list it as dual enrollment so you don't need to get the transcript from it. SOPHAS unverified me for that at first. Quickly fixed however.
-Get your recommenders in early, even professors/employers that are usually prompt tend to get a little lazy when it comes to letters of recommendation!
-Its worth it to attend one of the SOPHAS virtual fairs. I feel most people don't take advantage of this resource and I received useful advice from this. Two professors at UPitt recommended specific professors I should connect with according to my research interests (and complimented me on them as well!) and someone from admissions at Columbia more or else told me to retake the GRE to raise my quant score(I signed up that weekend and raised it to what I wanted, very happy about that decision)
-Finally, START EARLY!!! I started mid September and wasn't completely finished until Nov 10. Life tends to get in the way of the process and delay you so do yourself a favor and at least start filling in your SOPHAS info ASAP (application opens late August)

Nothing else I can think of at the moment but will certainly update as I continue with this ordeal-I mean journey!

And for the my fellow cycle applicants, I'll be 23 when I matriculate as well. No boyfriend. But by and far, my number one choice is Columbia. I'm a native new yorker and almost all my friends will be in the city next year so I hope to join them. Job prospects will be best for me if I stay there. I also have an ex I hope to reconnect with there. 😉

My Columbia interview is tomorrow! Wish me luck fellow SDN'ers! (This is me procrastinating actually preparing for it) :brb:

Edit: Columbia interview for hpm applicants: short, easy 10-15 minutes. Asked simple questions about why columbia, why mph, why now, what you expect to get out of your degree. Interviewer was very receptive to questions as well. Don't know how much importance they place on these interviews. I thought I sounded very nervous and rushed through my answers but seems like I must've done okay!

**If theres anything I wished I would've done differently, its that I wouldn't have applied to as many schools. Its an expensive process and I think I was scared that I wouldn't get into any schools. lol

Since a lot of us are ladies (and some gentlemen) who have been attending a lot of baby showers, bridal showers, and weddings and feel the pressure of marriage/babies, etc., I thought I'd share something a little different I'm doing. Since I don't really plan on getting married, and if I do it will be much later, and if I have kids I plan on adopting much later as well, I am going to do a "grad school reveal" party in the vein of a "gender reveal party." A lot of my friends have multiple parties per event (engagement announcement, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, wedding; pregnancy announcement, gender reveal, baby shower), and, while I love them, I don't think those are the only accomplishments worth celebrating! 😉🙄😀

Love this idea. Might copy it.

Reading about people having interviews with Columbia has sent me into panic mode! I applied to the Populations and Family Health dept. and haven't heard a peep since the confirmed that my application was forwarded to my department for review. What does this mean?! Has anyone else heard back/have interviews scheduled?

I believe the interviews are just for health management/policy majors

That's so clever! I'm definitely going to do something similar! Good idea!

Maybe they'll take advantage of the long weekend with MLK Jr. Day (if they observe it) to release an extra large amount of decisions...

And if I may ask and clarify, it's been mostly for the MHA program within the health policy & management department, right?

I applied to the MPH program within the department and have yet to hear back. Is that the case for others?

I believe that they have been for both the MPH and MHA divisions of that department. However, they appear to be trickling in slowly, so I definitely wouldn't give it much thought.

Was accepted today into UNC's MSPH program for Health Policy and Management. I only joined this forum in order to encourage others. Please look at my stats and be cheered by the fact that some schools, at least, take work experience and personality into greater consideration than GPA and test score values...

Undergrad School: Small liberal arts college in Texas
Undergrad GPA: 3.48
Major/Minor: English/Spanish
GradGPA (if applicable):
Grad Studies (if applicable):
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable):
166 V / 156 Q / 4.0 AR (Seriously. An English major. Got a 3.5 the first time.)
Experience/Research
- I've worked for the past year and a half as a grant writer for a nationally know nonprofit that supports women's reproductive rights and healthcare for the uninsured.
- Prior to that, I worked as a grant writer/event coordinator for one year within a local hospital's foundation.
- I've volunteered for the past two years as local hospitals, specifically those that serve low-income families and children.

***Please include the following whenever possible: specific concentration/track, dates, type of correspondence (phone, email, letter, etc.), scholarships/grants. Judging by last year's thread, yes we are this obsessive and neurotic.***

Applied: UNC; Harvard; GWU; UT; JHU; Columbia; Tulane; Emory
Accepted: UNC (1/15; interviewed 1/12)
Rejected: Emory
Waitlisted:

Emory didn't even bother to email me when they uploaded my rejection letter to OPUS. Burn, lol.

Don't worry, I applied to the same concentration and haven't received anything about interviews (I was worried too haha)

Interviews are only for MHA applicants. Someone should make a sticky about this.

Oh that might be why! I applied for Epi, so it might take a little longer. Thanks!!!

I was just admitted to the University of Michigan! I applied to the Nutrition Dietetics program on December 14th but it showed up as December 16th.
Did they email you or did you find out via the wolverine site?

They sent an email, my application was verified on 12/08!

I received my BU packet today. It was sent to my parents house, which is in the Boston area, so people should be expecting their packets in the next few days.

Interviews are for MPH and MHA candidates to Columbia's health policy and management department. I am an MPH applicant to the HPM department I received an email Jan 5 that they would be scheduling interviews and I was contacted by a student the next day. I had my interview Monday (Jan 12) and I wrote a post about it on this thread. I applied to Columbia really early on 10/5 and I don't know if they're scheduling interviews based on order they received applications. However I didn't receive a confirmation email from them till I emailed them so I don't think it would hurt to email and them ask.

I'm afraid this isn't correct. I applied for the 2 yr MPH program in the health management and policy department! It is however only for this department within the MPH program.

For others that haven't received the invitation yet, don't fret! There were several cases of people last year accepted into the program and concentration without an interview. They may also be doing rounds.

Edit: Just read your post from Monday mphwannabe! Good to know! I'm definitely way more nervous than I should be.

Also my interviewer's schedule shows 30 people within two days(Wed & Fri). Don't know if this bit of information is helpful or relevant....

I automatically assumed all health management and policy concentrations were strictly MHA. I don't see much of a difference, honestly.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, they don't send e-mails when you're accepted, either. 😵

I much prefer just getting emails! That's too much clicking around for me, ha. I think I was one of the few that wasn't glued to OPUS. I probably only checked it 5 times since I got my account information to the rejection! I do check my email a few times a day though.

Don't stress!! It's super casual and informal! Wow that's a lot of people! But I think the MPH in HPM is on the larger side? I'm not sure but I'm trying to put it out of my mind till mid Feb.

Here's the link to Columbia's MHA program http://publichealth.columbia.edu/degree-programs/mha
And here's the link to the Columbia MPH program http://publichealth.columbia.edu/degree-programs/columbia-mph

The MHA and MPH in HPM department are generally offered separately in most schools. The MHA focuses on a more business and management driven approach while the MPH in an HPM department focuses on more policy and implementation. Career wise MHA's are trained for careers generally in hospital and healthcare administration while MPH's in HPM generally can go into government or think tanks, etc. Obviously this isn't rigid but I think it serves as a good guideline to delineate the differences between the two.

thanks mphwannabe and hopefulNY for the clarification on Columbia MPH health policy & management interviews!

Your dog (I'm assuming the one in your photo) is adorable!

Thanks! Miss Lucy is a reproductive health advocate now that she's no longer a puppy mill mama. Yes, that's right, after almost dying of pyometra she now plays exclusively with my stuffed uterus doll. She's particularly fond of licking it and, sometimes (when I have people over) chewing on the fallopian tubes. #ThatsMyDaughter

As a current vet tech, it warms my heart to hear success stories with pyometra. Glad to hear that she is doing well!!!!

 That IS a uterus! Hilarious!!!

She was taken in by Dachshund Rescue and because she was so sick as it was, she was in vet care immediately. It was a vet tech that noticed initial symptoms and got her into surgery asap. Now she's fat, happy, and never having another litter again. The uterus is her baby now. Man, my dog is a weirdo.

did anyone get any scholarship information in their official offer letter from GW?

Last day before the 3 day weekend, here's to hoping it's a good one full of fruitful refreshing and acceptances!!

I'd totally forgotten that it's Martin Luther King day this Monday! I'm starting to really dislike weekends, hopefully today will be filled with acceptance e-mails! The stress of all this waiting around is ruining my life!

Today better be! I feel like Yale must be releasing some more soon.

Also saw that Columbia's FAFSA info is due the 1st. Is that like super early?
