MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For anyone waiting to hear back from Harvard, I called today and they said emails normally go out on Feb. 20th so hopefully we should hear back next week. Also their admitted students day is March 27th (overlaps with Emory).
Update: Called 2/18 and they said acceptance could go out anytime from now through March.

That early?? I wasn't expecting to hear from them until like March. I don't have much hope that I'll be getting into Harvard, but now I'm going to be frantically checking for that e-mail around the end of next week.

They do say on their website that decisions are released in late Feb/early March, I'd count Feb 20th and after as late Feb. Schools seem to be releasing earlier this year so maybe it's a trend?

Yeah, it looks like most of their decisions were released 1st/2nd week of March. It does seem that most schools are releasing decisions earlier this year (although i'm still waiting on Emory!). I can't believe it's almost time to solidify a decision!

This is a really stupid question but hopefully you can help. Can I not make corrections to my FAFSA until it's processed? I forgot to add a school :/
Yeah you can, you just sign in and you'll have the option

Anybody having trouble checking their application status on UMass Spire? It was fine this morning, but now the link is dead.

My application was verfieid by the department and sent to the HPM Dept. on Jan. 5. I received an invite to interview around Jan. 28. I received a follow-up email to schedule my interview this past Monday and did my interview that same night. I found out yesterday (next day) that I got in. Hope that helps!

Thank you! This was extremely helpful. I had my phone interview last night and am anxiously checking my e-mail. Congratulations on your acceptance!

Woke up to an email from Michigan saying I've been accepted for Epi. I just barely recovered from the shock. I got into to my two reach schools. I really don't know what to do now.
I know what you need to do: Pick one and don't look back.

Congratulations - that's a great 'problem' to have...

Hooray! Just got an acceptance email for the accelerated epi program at Columbia! Happy and relieved. Any other post-MD/post-PhD folks out there considering the accelerated MPH?

I didn't have any public health experience and I thought I didn't qualify and so I never applied!! But now I realize I should have just gone ahead and applied anyway. I'm a post-doc with research experience in the HIV field - biochem and biophysics. I'm so bummed I didn't apply 🙁
I did apply to the Harvard and Yale accelerated programs.

I just got accepted into Michigan's program for Hospital and Molecular Epi! Now I have no clue how I am going to choose between Columbia, Michigan, and Berkeley....
Congratulations. They're all fantastic schools.

This isn't so much directed at you (you didn't ask for nor likely need any 'help' deciding where you want to go to school), but here are some things I considered that other posters might find useful:

- What part of the country do you want to live in after you complete your studies? I know the internet has made national/international recruiting much more viable, but there is still a local networking benefit to be derived from studying in the area you wish to settle in.

- Cost of living (COL). Of the three you mentioned, I would guess Michigan's COL would be significantly less than the other two. How much of a factor that is depends on how stretched you'll be trying to cover you school expenses. A generous grant or scholarship might reduce its importance though. It all depends on your financial situation.

- Regional vibe. The US is still a very regional country. When you're in NYC, you definitely know you're in NYC and not in Michigan, and so on with the West Coast. I favor the Midwestern ethic/temperament, but other people love the East or West Coasts for reasons that are easy to understand. The South also has its charms, starting with the mild weather. I also love the BBQ down there. A little too much. But I digress...

At any rate, have fun choosing. You obviously invested some serious effort in your studies and application to be accepted by those programs. Again - congrats...

GW's Facebook group for admitted students says that all recipients for merit or dean's scholarships have been already chosen...but that they're still rolling out notifications and will definitely be complete within the month. :dead:

I saw that and about died. I'm fairly sure I won't get anything even though I'm particularly awesome. Dammit, GRE.

See, I have the GPA problem. I'm feeling particularly un-special snowflake right now. 🙁

Just got an email that I received a merit scholarship from Columbia, so hopefully others will get news from financial aid soon, too! I was accepted for the MPH in Epi, in case they roll the information out in waves.
Congrats! If you don't mind what are your stats?

Rejected from Columbia for Environmental Health...not so fun to hear but it was my reach school and I really wasn't ready to move there anyway. One more school to go!!

Congrats! If you don't mind what are your stats?

For the GRE, I had V-165, Q-158, W-5.0. My undergrad degree was in International Relations with a 3.8 GPA. I'm currently finishing a master's program for International Development (same GPA). I've taken a fair number of public health classes, and my practicum is related to nutrition. But other than that, I don't really have an extensive amount of public health experience. I've been working in development across other sectors in research and program evaluation roles. I spent last summer doing similar work in Liberia, so that factored pretty heavily into my interest in infectious disease epi and humanitarian assistance.

Hope that helps!

I really wanted to do a dual degree in development/public health when I first started graduate school, and was absolutely crushed when I had to turn down the PH part of the degree because of cost. Hopefully this is a good sign that it will work out better this time around! 🙂

John's Hopkins is killing me... I got the e-mail on 12/1 that said a decision could take 8-10 weeks. This is the 10th week. Has anyone heard a decision who applied to the MPH?

It other news, I got my package from Emory today. It's pretty nice/useful. Don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone if you're into being surprised, ha.

Just saw it! Congrats! The decision letter says I was admitted to Epi, so I'm assuming that means I didn't make it into Global Epidemiology? Either way I'm pretty happy!
Yeah same here. I had applied first to GLEPI, but no word on that. Congrats to you as well!!

I had the same thing a few weeks back and I emailed my advisor and she said that Global Health did not accept by application so I just got into Epi which I am fine with. She said that they were looking into why I never received notice about the other decisions, but I never got any info beyond that. I guess the Global Health department really did want past experience, at least that is what it has been looking like on the accepted students facebook page.

Oh and of course congrats!!

Congrats! Can I ask when you submitted your FAFSA and stuff?

Thanks for the info, that's interesting. I am just happy to be in🙂. When did you get your adviser info?

Thank you! I am definitely considering all of these..I'm just a bit indecisive about location. I'm from California and live very close to Berkeley so it may be fun to move somewhere else as I also went to undergrad in California, but at the same time most of my family and a lot of friends I have known my whole life are here. I also have family in Midwest so that is a good option but I love NYC and it would be amazing to live there. I also have to factor in programs because they are all different, Michigan is Hospital and Molecular Epi, Berkeley is Infectious Disease, and Columbia is Epi with certificate in Infectious Disease. Time for some lengthy pro/con lists! Once I hear back about any financial award offers that will impact my decision, as well. Is anyone else deciding between these programs?

Received my first rejection today.

Thanks, Columbia. I'm already having a hard time deciding, so at least I don't have to add them into the mix. Oh wellll

I'm working between Michigan (International Epi), Emory (Epi), Yale (Epi of Microbial Diseases), and Columbia (Epi with Infectious Disease). I'm with you on the pros and cons lists. I have a giant white board on my wall with sooo many charts and I still have no idea. 😛

Really?? I'm surprised; you got into Berkeley and UNC! But you're right, that just makes the decision easier!

I got into the Columbia accelerated MPH for epi last week and heard today that I received a merit award!! Does anyone definitively know what their annual tuition is though? (I know others in this thread appear confused about this as well.)

I think it's $17,500/semester; that might not be comprehensive of fees, though.

Edit: Here's the link to the 2014/2015 tuition and fees for Columbia http://sfs.columbia.edu/tuition-rates-and-fees?year=57&school=23

Just wondering how important the interview from Columbia HPM will be. My interview was really really bad. :🙁

And I thought getting in Global Health would be easier than Epi....should have done my homework better...

Hi - to you and the rest of the people who applied for Columbia HPM, did you have a phone interview? When was your application verified and how soon after were you accepted? Any help you can give me would be great! 🙂

I got my interview last Friday 2/6 in the morning and I was accepted literally that afternoon!

Ahhh!!! I decided to check OPUS as a joke because of all the decisions posts today and I got the pay admissions deposit link on OPUS!!! Accepted into my first choice GLEPI!!

EDIT 2/12/2015: Still no official email from Rollins, but I got an email from Fedex with the tracking number for my admissions package!

Oh, wow! Thank you for your response. I'm hoping I found out tomorrow if everyone else is finding out this quickly.

Considering its not a faculty interview I doubt they put too much weight on it. I think its just to get a sense that you have a goal in mind and can articulate your thoughts if anything. I had the interview last Friday with a horrible cold, could barely talk properly and got the acceptance earlier this week. I wouldn't worry too much about it

I would like to know that as well! Just curious as to how much importance it carries in the decision.
