MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an e-mail from Georgia State saying my application is complete and under review (MPH - Epi). Just now getting around to sending in my residency form. Whoops lol.

I need to complete the residency form as well. Would I be considered a GA resident if I moved her in August 2014?? I will have been here for a year by the time the semester starts..

To be considered a resident for in-state tuition in GA you have to have lived here for a year before the first day of classes. Additionally, most schools require that you show an "intent to stay". Essentially meaning you have your voter registration, drivers license, and/or have held full-time residence/employment in the state.

For those of you who applied to Georgia State's MPH program, I just got an email that my application is under active review!

I got that e-mail as well. It seems pretty late to just now start reviewing applicants. It also reminded me that I forgot to fax in my residency information. 😉

Now we get to refresh their application status update a million times waiting for the decision to pop up, lol.. Or maybe that'll just be me. :help:

Waitlisted at Columbia. Blerg. I feel like I'm not even allowed to be excited (DREAM SCHOOL) because I'd hate to get my hopes up. Any insight as to the amount of movement that list sees?

I'll probably fall into that trap as well 🙁. GSU would be such an affordable option. Their in-state tuition is so cheap.

Congrats on the waitlist! Much better than a flat out rejection. This is just speculation, but I'd guess their waitlist has some movement. They are an expensive option that many people end up turning down because of the debt load.

Pro tip: Google <school name> CEPH self-study

Most schools, not sure about Columbia, post their CEPH accreditation self-study on their website. Under section 4, Student Recruitment and Admissions, it will show their admission rates/statistics by program. Should give you an idea of how many admitted students end up accepted the offer.

Awesome - good to know! I just went to look at Columbia's, but sadly they don't make theirs publicly accessible via their website:

As a member of the Mailman School community, the self-study is provided for your review; please use the link below to download. For individuals outside of the Mailman community, the self-study and CEPH report are available upon request. Please send requests for copies to the Office of Educational Programs.

This will be helpful for the other schools, though!!

Congratulations! Tough choice, but for good reasons! 😀 Did they direct you to an application section for assistantships? Not sure if the process is the same for MHA, but they gave me a link to a page with application instructions - assuming it works the same for you guys, maybe they don't offer any assistantships automatically and you need to apply for one?
ahh thanks, thats good to know. did u receive this info with your congratulations you are recommended email or with your official acceptance from the grad school? Nonetheless I will inquire. Yeah I do have a tough choice. I want Georgetown so bad but Im graduating undergrad in May (no full time work experience) without a single loan so Im kind of not used to the idea of being in debt, especially staring down these kinds of numbers. If I had already had a few years of work & more savings I'd probably choose Georgetown...but I will admit if UMD offers an assistantship, It would be super hard to turn it down. Where are you at in your decisions? Are you leaning towards Columbia or GW?

Have most people who applied to Columbia HPM heard a decision? Is there anyone who hasn't? I've been waiting anxiously and have already had my phone call interview.

I am in the exact same boat as you! My interview was back on 2/4.

Thanks for the info. Darn, I guess I can't get in-state tuition.

On grad cafe I see a couple people with decisions for the MPH in HPM and for the MHA. I see more for the MPH-HPM though. They all list their acceptance dates around Feb 10 or so, perhaps you will hear soon.

Has anyone waiting on UNC seen any update on their Apply Yourself page? Just wondering if they are sending out official decisions yet or just the informal department emails. I'm specifically waiting on the MPH-RD program but feel free to chime in regarding other departments too!

Called Emory to get an update on my application. They said an update was posted to my OPUS last Wednesday, but that she would figure out why it isn't showing up for me. She didn't tell me what the decision was though, so I'm thinking it might be a rejection 🙁.

Well I would definitely check with them before taking my word on it! I've only been an official resident of Georgia for just over a year now (couldn't declare while I was in school). That's just the conclusion I came to when I was researching it.

Rejected: Columbia - email

Still not sure where to go…U of MN is directly in line with my career/research interests but it’s expensive (out of state) and the classes are a little larger than I prefer. CUNY has small classes and is affordable. But I’m not sure if the GIS concentration would still get me in the environmental health field…I plan on pursuing a PhD, so cost is a factor. Thoughts?
UMN's non-resident tuition is relatively inexpensive compared to other public universities. Plus the cost of living in the Twins Cities is not that high (I almost passed out from shock when I saw you could get a 1 bd/ 1 br apt for less than $650). As one of the admissions officers told me, yes the core classes will be large, but once you start getting into your concentration, you will have a smaller class size. And if it's a PhD you're after, you want to go were there are ample research opportunities. I don't think CUNY can boast that.

I emailed them and they told me this: "It appears you could possibly be considered as in-state but there is no way of making a decision until after all documents are received. Residency is not evaluated nor determined until after a student is accepted to the University."

Ahhhhh in at Tufts!! My top choice!

Now what?! I was going to commit to UTSPH due to location (close to long-term significant other, close to where I want to live post-MPH, and dirt cheap tuition)... but Tufts was my first choice. Blah, why is life so hard?!

Thats an amazing (and similar to mine) problem to have!!! Congrats!

I received my MCH decision recommendation on 01/30 and the email that my decision was posted to Apply Yourself on 02/13, but when I checked Apply Yourself, my application was gone. Luckily, I still have access to Connect Carolina which is UNC's student informational portal and contains financial aid info, test scores, demographic information, decisions, etc etc. It said I was accepted to the MCH program and I should get an email soon that about the admissions process, but that hasn't shown up yet. What does it say on yours?

Also, UNC classes and offices were cancelled Tuesday afternoon/evening, all day Wednesday, and delayed today because of weather. Woooo

Speaking of UNC, did anyone here apply to the MSPH to PhD program in epi? If so, have you heard anything?

I'm really sorry to hear that. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's favorable.

Yeah, it's disappointing to think that I might not have gotten in (still nothing posted to OPUS). I've become really interested in UIC's program though and think that it would be a great fit for me. Would be a huge change to move from Atlanta to Chicago. I'm still hoping that she just didn't tell me and that it's an acceptance, but I'm at least happy that I've got some other very good options.

Has anyone received their OrgSync welcome email from Columbia?

Thanks for the info! I'm trying to be patient...but it is so difficult!

Just received an e-mail from Emory. I was accepted to the Environmental Health MPH. I applied to the EH-EPI MSPH as my second choice designation, but was rejected so they offered me admissions into the EH department. I guess this means I was rejected from GLEPI as well. They also said that my application would be forwarded to my third choice designation. However, my third choice was EPI and if I was rejected from GLEPI then I assume I was also rejected from EPI.

So, apologies, after looking into it - it does seem that the MHA program does not require an additional application for assistantships based off what it says here and that you are automatically considered: http://sph.umd.edu/department/hlsa/tuition-and-financial-aid

I was told in the "you are recommended" email to start applying for assistantships. :-/ My specific department's form is here, in case you want to see it for whatever reason, lol: http://sph.umd.edu/sites/default/files/files/GA Application 2012.pdf

I'm all ughh 'cause for that form I have no relevant D-F. I'm trying to learn more about UMD but as an out-of-state person (it would be nice if they had reciprocity tuition agreements for us District residents!) it's not as appealing as the potential opportunities at GW, especially since I've been really able to reach out to my potential future department there. UMD is still slightly cheaper, but not by a significant amount. I'll have to see when I visit! Also have been asking friends who have gone or go to grad school there for their thoughts - even though they are in very different programs. Hmmm...are there any opportunities for work at Georgetown? I'm out of my depth on this, but I'd be curious to see if anyone has thoughts on the benefits of a MHA through a school of public health vs. Georgetown's school of health studies (or if that matters - or only matters for specific career trajectories after graduating)? Not gonna lie, though, always wanted to go to Georgetown so I'm super jealous...I wish they had a MPH program for me. 🙁

If the debt load is extremely different, UMD might be more valuable (and is a great school in general) but obviously Georgetown is also an awesome school. Wish I could give you better advice. 🙁 I'm not sure what debt load to take on myself; I'm expecting to have my single undergrad loan paid off (or close to it) hopefully by matriculation.

Congrats on your acceptance!!!! It's strange that they didn't notify when we were rejected from our other choices. Oh well!

I almost applied to UIC. It sounds like a fantastic program. Personally, I think Chicago sounds like a really cool place to be, accept for those winters 🙂

Just accepted at Columbia for MS in Biostatistics with a concentration in Pharmaceutical Statistics!
God damn it, things were so much easier when I thought I knew where I was going :/

Oooo smart career choice there

I think regardless of where I go, I would probably go towards pharmaceutical or biotech companies. I'm really stuck between Emory's MPH biostats for Columbia's MS Biostat's program now. Blahhh I wish there were more biostats people around here, it doesn't seem to be a popular topic in these forums.

Congrats on your acceptance!!!! It's strange that they didn't notify when we were rejected from our other choices. Oh well!
Yeah, I find it strange I wasn't notified as well. Oh well, I figured GLEPI was a stretch for me considering how competitive Emory is. I'm happy with my options as they sit right now.

Yeah, I really do like their program and they seem to provide their students with ample research opportunities. I've never been to Chicago, but it seems like a great city. The winters would be a rough transition though! It was rough enough when it "snowed" (flurries) here in Atlanta today.

Has anyone received their OrgSync welcome email from Columbia?
I haven't, from your name are you in the HPM department? Because I am too so maybe it's department specific? I was accepted on 2/10

Yep also accepted to the HPM department. I was accepted on 2/10 as well and the email said we would receive another email in 3-5 business days but it's been more than that..

Anyone considering UIC it's a great school and its downtown Chicago! I've lived in Chicago it's definitely where I want to come back for my career after an MPH!

Also just finished my interview with Columbia, I think it went well... But you can never tell. I think there were at least 22 people interviewing this week for the Health Policy and Management program.

I keep checking my email like a crazy woman. Anyone else in my boat? I'm not sure when I expect to hear back! As much as I don't want too leave Chicago, Columbia is my #1 school of choice

Yeah we're probably over thinking it but lol I just want to know!! And I sent them an email so I will post their response.

Has everyone who applied to GWU heard back yet? I was verified 11/26 and still have not heard a decision. Did anyone else apply for the MS in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases?

Is Columbia going to send out a packet to us? They didn't really tell us anything in the e-mail or in OrgSync...

I applied right around that time and still haven't heard back. I called them again today and was told I should be hearing within a week
