MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everybody! Has anybody who has submitted recently (in the past week or two) been verified yet? I just started to submit (sent in two last night and about to send another), and am just wondering how long this is going to take!

I already had my LORs in and transcripts in, so once I actually submitted a school's application, within a couple business days(!) everything was verified! I submitted on 11/25, and by 12/1 (at least that's when I next checked), everything was green and verified! So I really wouldn't worry too much.

SOPHAS hasn’t received the transcripts from the community colleges that I attended during the summer, but two of my references are in. I really hope that does not affect my application considering the fact that the application deadline for GWU is 12/15.

Also, I hope it’s not too late to retake the GREs.

The deadline for application consideration at GWU is March 15th. Scholarship consideration ends on December 15th, though.

Worried that I'm lacking on experience and research (ballet took up all my time in undergrad), and that all the schools I'm applying to are very competitive...

I submitted my SOPHAS application on 12/1, with 1 transcript missing that arrived on 12/3. I'm worried because I just saw that SOPHAS requires ALL transcripts to be received by the submission deadline (which was 12/1 for one of my apps). Since 12/3, all of my documents have arrived but none have been verified. I know it can take up to 4 weeks to verify, but I'm worried that because 1 of my transcripts didn't arrive by 12/1, that it impacted my submission. Has this happened to anyone else before? Is this something to call SOPHAS about?

When I hover over the program I submitted for in "My Program Selections," it says "This program is unavailable. The deadline has passed for this program" in orange, but there is a green check mark next to it, and under "Program Status," it says "Verifying" (with all of the information I had discussed above).

EDIT: Never mind, got an email this morning (12/10) saying everything has been verified! I should've been more patient lol these are anxious times...

Has anyone completed their faculty call with someone from University of Washington? I'm speaking to a professor this Friday, and I'm curious what the experience is like. I'm preparing by going over the website materials, coming up with questions, etc., but any input would be appreciated!

The calls I've had with UW faculty and program advisors were primarily driven by what questions I had to ask. I did spend a fair amount of time at the beginning outlining my background, my academic goals, my research interests, and my interest in the UW MPH program, but didn't really feel like I was the one being interviewed at any point. I definitely got on my calls more prepared to answer questions than ask them, so I'd recommend having a variety of different questions to ask. The faculty members I spoke with wound up pre-emptively answering a lot of the questions I was planning on asking, so I know by the end of my calls I was definitely struggling to come up with new things to talk about, which I wasn't expecting (especially given that UW is one of my top choices and I've spent a lot of time researching the school, faculty research, programs, etc). Both of my calls lasted around 20-30 minutes -- you can tell that they do a lot of these. I know after talking with a program coordinator, a big part of the application process is evaluating candidates qualitatively -- figuring out what makes an applicant tick, getting a sense of how they'd fit in at the school, etc. So I think the faculty interviews and SOP make a much more significant impact on an applicant's competitiveness than GPA, GRE, or even work experience.

I submitted my app on 11/19 but didn't get the "verified" email until late last night. My transcript entry (professional) was paid for back in October but it didn't get processed until I paid for the application. I think I got the email to validate my transcripts on 11/30.
(Now I'm just waiting for my application to actually show my GPA breakdown--checked it twice since the verified email and still not showing :|

I found the MPH Program at California Baptist University is accepting applications (https://www.calbaptist.edu/academic.../public-health-sciences/master-public-health/)
Their Public Health program is designed to prepare students to serve as practitioners, researchers, and instructors in the area of public health at the local, state, national and international setting. Students have the choice of two different concentrations: Health Policy and Administration or Health Education and Promotion. They also do some global health stuff. They have received initial notification of the CEPH accreditation process.

I'm a little late to the (posting) game. First post though, I've been lurking for a bit!!

SOPHAS GPA: 3.8
Major/Minor: anthropology/psychology minor and honors medicine & society minor
GRE: 159V/161Q/6W (no clue what I even wrote about...)

Not a lot, sadly.

Extensive ethnographic analysis concerning stress and pain perception in certain communities.

Mostly interested in HPM/ epidemiology, focusing overall on bioethics and health law. I've worked for health related law firms in the past, and am sort of 30/70 between a joint JD MPH program, or intensive policy analysis, even after I complete an MPH. So for now, this is step one in my journey!

To say the least, I'm terrified My apps were all sent at once, received on either 11/30 or 12/1, depending on the school. My last (third) recc faced a huge amount of technical difficulties, but was officially received 12/1.

Best of luck to everyone! Can't wait to see this thread grow!

Update: Just as I sent this in, I got my first acceptance! GWU Woo!

Best of luck to everyone! Can't wait to see this thread grow!

Congrats! I applied to GW three weeks ago and haven't heard anything yet so I'm surprised (and jealous) that you heard in just ten days but that's amazing!

Ahhh! All of these acceptances are so exciting! :highfive:
(Also stressful, because I keep hoping to see an email notification pop up on my phone...)

I know! An email from Columbia came in today, and I nearly had a heart attack. It was just a confirmation that my application was received, which is good and all, but not what I hoped for.

My app was "done" a while back, the professional transcript entry and then my third letter were the only issues, so it may have been a tad longer than ten days. SOPHAS confuses me so much with all of these 'statuses', agh.

We shall see what happens, but hey maybe I'll see you there! 🙂

Had the same feeling with UT the other day! Confirmation emails are nice, but an acceptance letter during finals week would be even nicer 🙂

How long did it take you guys to get your transcripts entered through SOPHAS? Maybe I'm just being impatient, but it seems like it's been at least two weeks at this point. Also, for anyone applying to McGill, I've heard they take FOREVER to send out decisions. Can someone confirm/disprove this?

UT really gave me a scare because I got a confirmation e-mail 1.5 months after I submitted my app but before the scholarship deadline and then another identical confirmation e-mail after the deadline and I panicked because I thought maybe something went wrong! Turns out that everything is fine, but I am getting antsy because it seems like some people have heard back already and lurking from previous years it seemed like many decisions were already out at this time for UT.

Agreed though! It is my finals period too and I would love an acceptance right about now!

For those of you who got into GW, congrats!!!!!!!! Was your application verified or did they look at it before verification (I heard some schools do that? Weird)

Pretty sure my GW app was verified much before the acceptance. I got an email from GW soon after getting verified and cleared through SOPHAS that my application was complete. Surprised it didn't take long to get the acceptance because they said average turnaround is 6-8 weeks. I'm sure more of you will be hearing soon!

I also got my acceptance from GW after SOPHAS verification....they sent me an email after 2/3 days of verification saying that I will hear within 8-10 weeks....but it was pretty fast (2 weeks) in my case....

I received a confirmation shortly after submitting, then an acceptance a few days ago, but then they send another confirmation email after I'd already received the acceptance. I'm hoping the acceptance was legitimate...

I had the same experience as a bunch of you guys yesterday when I got an email titled "USF College of Public Health: Admissions" and it was just to tell me that decisions will be delayed because of the holidays. So rough haha

After lurking in previous years and reading horror stories about UT admissions and mix-ups/confusion I was hoping that our application cycle would be spared...

What are my chances guys? Im nervous because I have literally no experience in Public health… but there has gotta be people like me out there who switch career paths!

What questions were you asked in the interview? Congratulations btw!!!

The interviewer was a very nice lady, I felt really comfortable. She asked me about my future plans, about my ability to work in teams, she discussed my personal statement and my CV with me. And she asked me if I have certain questions I wanted to ask her about. In general, I felt that she already made an impression through my application materials and she wanted to confirm that impression. At the end of the interview, she told me that I am a good candidate for this program.

Good Luck!

as far as I can tell, the only admissions decisions for UT have been for the Austin regional campus. I'm also worried that a confirmation email for my application was sent after an acceptance email. Hope it all works out!

I'm not sure about McGill specifically, but Canadian apps are usually not reviewed on a rolling basis so that's probably why you'd hear back later. Most people (even with strong applications) won't hear back from grad schools until April-May in time for graduation. I've heard McGill is disorganized as it is so that probably adds to it.

Mine was verified, albeit last minute 😉 After verification, it was roughly nine days to get the acceptance. My verification was a bit weird, the "complete" date is actually incorrect, but they respond quickly! Now to wait on UT-H.... I drive past it every day. They better get cracking!

Hey y'all, I submitted my app 11/19 but my letters STILL aren't in :|...
For a few weeks after all my transcripts came in, SOPHAS showed my status as "verifying" instead of "awaiting materials", but it has since changed back to "awaiting materials".
So I got an email from Colorado this morning...
"Thank you for submitting your application to the Colorado School of Public Health. Your materials have been verified by SOPHAS and your application will be submitted to our Faculty Review Committee shortly. Please know, the length of the review process varies by department and typically does not start until after the January 15th preferred application deadline."
What gives? Could it be that my GPA was verified before my letters came in or am I just hopeful? 😛

I got that e-mail as well! I wonder how long it takes for them typically...

It took about one week for my transcript to be sent and verified. That's strange for yours to be taking so long! Or maybe I'm a special case; I'm not sure.
It finally went through a few days before the deadline! So much for applying early haha

Has anyone else's UMD application been marked as complete without having all 3 letters of recommendation submitted?

I received a confirmation from Emory saying they had received my application, but no OPUS login. The confirmation email says to email SPH admissions to designate second and third choice programs, but the application information says this should be done through OPUS.

Has anyone received anything further from them clarifying this?

How long after SOPHAS Verified your application did it take for Emory to notify you that they had received your application?

SOPHAS verified my app at the end of Nov and my other schools (Vanderbilt and Yale) notified me saying they received my application on 12/05 and 12/08, respectively. But, I have yet to hear from Emory that my app has been received.

Thanks!

I got mine from Emory within a week after verification, which was about 2+ weeks away from the date of submission. It came as "sphadmissions", so I didn't see it at first 🙂

I was thinking of applying to the Health Services Department, and their admissions page "highly recommends" that you set up a phone call with faculty. Not sure about the other programs, sorry!

I see you are also applying to both Temple and Drexel. I know Drexel is ranked as one of the top public health programs, I believe it's #25. Do you know where Temple might rank in relation to that? I haven't heard much about Temple's reputation for that program to be honest.

Does anyone know when we should expect to start hearing back from Michigan, Pittsburgh, Yale, and BU?
