Any current or past MPH/RD candidates out there who have any advice on strengthening my application if I don't make it this round?

I couldn't figure out how to reply to multiple in one post but thanks everyone! Stilling holding out for PhD programs but I couldn't be happier to have BU MPH as a viable option. I just finished a brutal final yesterday so getting the e-mail was well timed.

I submitted my first SOPHAS app in mid-october so it was verified pretty early and then I finished my app for BU on 11/7. My stats are on the first page of this thread.

Thanks for sharing your information and congrats again!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted!! That is so exciting!!:soexcited:

I am nervous because Michigan still hasn't confirmed that they've received my app - what gives! 🙁 I sent it in on Sunday so maybe I need to be more patient?

I just got my acceptance letter for BU an hour ago through email! I forgot when I submitted but I got an application received email on 12/2.

But I have severe text anxiety and I don't know if I would do better retaking them. I hoping 5 years work experience in the healthcare field will help me (if you count massage, which some of my advisors seem to think its relevant but, I'm not sure). What do you guys think?

Your relevant work experience, publications, and McNair scholarship will certainly outweigh the GRE scores. 2 years ago, Columbia accepted 57.2% of its applicants so the opportunity to attend your dream school may be closer than you think 🙂

Congrats!

Which program did you apply for? I know different departments have different turnaround times. I applied for two programs at UMich. The Epi department already gave me an acceptance but the HBHE department hasn't even looked at it yet from what they're telling me. Wouldn't give up hope at all just yet!

I applied for the MPH program. Thank you so much for your comfort! Let's hope for the best.

Which program? I'm getting sad haha cause I sent in an app at the same time but I'm health policy.

And by program I meant to say certificate 🙂

I also applied to HBHE, I feel better now haha

I've been a lurker on here for so many years, but felt like sharing! I'm mainly worried about my stats, but my recommendation letters and last few years of classes (and of course GRE), I hope will say something about how hard I work, despite difficulties and constant adjustments.

Undergrad School: Emory
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: Overall 3.0 / Social/Behavioral & Public Health 3.4
(had a rocky couple of semesters, had to work with family near home, siblings with disabilities and financial difficulties, medical proxy since I was 15, last one-two years were 3.0-3.5 every semester and continuing this trend in DIY postbacc as the issues have been dealt and solved + strong recommendation letters)
Major/Minor: Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology/Psychology Double Major
GradGPA
(if applicable): Postbacc GPA 3.0-3.5
Grad Studies (if applicable): N/A (see above)
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): 152V(54%)/145Q(21%.....ouch)/5 AW (93%)
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
  • 1 1/2 years of psychology research (positive psychology, mental health, health promotion and health intervention) in Department of Psychology and Office of Health Promotion - publication in future
  • 2 1/2 years of behavioral neuroscience and psychiatric disease research using animal models (drug addiction, depression and decision-making) at Yerkes National Primate Research Center (under the Marcus Autism Center and Department of Pediatrics Emory School of Medicine) - publications pending/in future
  • 1 year of molecular neuroscience/physiology research at Emory School of Medicine Department of Physiology
  • 1 year (300+ hours) of Americorps Jumpstart service
  • 3+ years of volunteer work at Children's Hospital (Baby Buddy in NICU and Art Cart Operator) and 1+ year at Winship Cancer Institute
  • Secretary/Vice President/President of Emory Anime Club (3+ years), Exec Member/Alumni of Flourish Emory, a positive psychology/holistic health oriented uprising organization at Emory (2+ years and currently), taught positive psychology mini-course, Member of Active Minds at Emory, SAPA Peer Advocate (Sexual Assault Peer Advocate), and HUES Mentor for incoming stem and science students (4 years)
  • Shadowed for 100+ hours under OBGYN and Family Doctor, did a lot of things like EKG, blood work and medical procedures.

Interested in: Health Promotion, Global Health and/or Epi. I'm really interested in social determinants of health, positive psychology, cognitive and affective neuroscience and public health. Particularly, my top choice is to go back to Emory and do the dual-degree program as an MA/MPH candidate to study intersectionality, neuroethics, and social determinants of health. I couldn't apply to more schools because of money, BUT I think my heart is set on staying in GA for my programs anyway. After, if all works out, I'd like to consider getting my PhD or Medical School, but I think it'll probably be in behavioral and preventive medicine of some sort.
Applied: Emory (Dual-Degree, Bioethics and Public Health) (1/2), Morehouse SOM (Public Health), UGA (Health Promotion), and GSU (Health Promotion)
Accepted:
Rejected:

Good luck everyone! 8) <3

I have not heard back from BUSPH yet, but I think BU is sending them incrementally. I am applying MBA/MPH and you need to apply to the business and public health schools separately (though they do admissions in conjunction), but an admissions person called from the MBA portion today and told me I was accepted with a full tuition scholarship (which is a miracle)!! They told me I will hear from SPH in the next few days, so maybe BU will be sending more letters very soon? Fingers crossed.

This is a really cool site. You can search the GRE/Grades of people that have been admitted and rejected any program.

Pretty helpful.

Ya you can look for diff universities and post/see when people are getting addmited/rejected/interview...

Emory

Yale
http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=(yale|&t=a&pp=100

Vanderbilt

In case anyone is looking for them 🙂

If any of you are still submitting apps through SOPHAS, check out the "Download Program Application" for any of your schools. The interface looks super sleek and way easier to read!

Wow, so glad you mentioned this. I remember the old one was an eyesore.

Undergrad School: Boston College
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.13 (had a rough first few semesters but GPA steadily inclined in the second-half)
Major/Minor: B.S. Psychology, concentration in Neurobiology (was pre-med so most of those requirements killed my GPA)
GradGPA
(if applicable): N/A

GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): 152 V/ 159 Q/ 3.5 W--this was about 3 years ago, so I'm taking it again in early January
Experience/Research (please, be brief):

I know that my GPA and GREs are a bit low for some of the program that I am applying for but these are the schools that I can envision myself attending in the future. I'm hoping that my experience and solid recommendations can gain me entry into some of these programs. Like I noted earlier, I'm particularly interested in public health informatics which is why Columbia is my top choice. I know that most schools don't have a formal emphasis or concentration in this but I found most MPH HPM programs attractive to me versus degrees in informatics.

Wishing you all the best of luck!

Undergrad School: UNC

-spent 1 year working in communications department for school of public health during undergrad
-volunteer experience at a food bank teaching cooking classes
Interested in: health communication, noncommunicable diseases, global health
Applied: UNC, Emory, Columbia, may apply to Tulane and GWU

Have lurked on here a while and wasn't sure if I wanted to post my info, mainly because of my embarrassing undergrad GPA. Very much hoping the GRE scores combined with my letters of rec and work experience save me. Also, because I haven't seen it mentioned: is anyone considering applying to USC's (Southern California) MPH program? Or know much about it? Since I'm interested in health communication, I've considered applying, although the price of the school is steep and the MPH is just a program as opposed to an actual school of public health.

I considered USC's program but eventually declined for the same reasons you mentioned plus the general hassle of living/traveling in Los Angeles. One of my mentors did point out that they had a very good roster of faculty so if you feel strongly about health communication, I'd recommend giving it a second look.

Opposite scenario here...got the UT SPH acceptance letter and waiting for BU....
I didn't apply to UT but I applied to BU , my supplemental application was verified on the 8th of December - should I be concerned about not hearing back yet ?

HBHE was my first department of choice at UMICH and Global Epi was second - I haven't heard back from either programs - your text gives me hope for HBHE but I'm assuming I didn't make it to global Epi

Mine was verified 12/1 and im still waiting. I'm leaning on the "will make every effort to notify you of a decision by the end of December" part. One ish more weeks until I will start to worry. 🙂
