That 65K figure for GW is from 15-16 tuition schedule- based on general raises in tuition that will occur for 16-17 & 17-18, I would estimate tuition will be closer to 70K. GW hasn't posted their per credit rate for the upcoming year yet

This right here! Not to add too much more commentary, but for those of us heading to Emory, please be aware this kind of reaction is common when people think that Druids Hill, where Atlanta and fancy Emory is, is equated to the rest of the state, when this is simply not true. Other areas like Decatur, College Park, and around the other areas of GA are vastly different throughout the Metro Atlanta Area and throughout the state (it can go from liberal to republican to downright.....radical within a few miles). I love Atlanta though because of this, but I've found a lot of people think the Emory bubble is how the rest of the state is, but unfortunately, it's not a thing (but you'll love it in its own way, I promise). This is not to demonize the original OP, but as a black American woman, that original post was certainly jarring for me because of what it says underneath that phrasing, even if it wasn't meant that way. The intent wasn't there and I get feeling unsafe so I'm sorry that experience was unpleasant, but I really do hope the OP does heed what others have said about the greater macro-level implications of the area.

Has anyone gotten their financial aid package from Emory in its entirety yet? I'm sure merit has gone out already, but I was curious if anyone else had gotten what's Emory is offering?
 
Any word on need-based aid from universities? That's where I'm hoping to get SOMETHING from. lol

Spanish Harlem is 3 miles away from Washington Heights where Columbia Mailman is. Please don't give out inaccurate information.

Now I feel like I have to clarify since I've basically been called a liar lol: The neighborhood being referred to is called El Barrio and has a bit more of a concrete location, however, lots of Caribbean descendants have been moving to Washington Heights within the last ten years so the ethnic enclave of "Spanish Harlem" (not totally synonymous with El Barrio because of historical migration) has slowly been migrating to that area. Which is WHY Washington Heights has so many Dominicans/Puerto Ricans. 10 years ago, it would be a complete different story - back when I was there, it was mostly Jewish. But the phrase Spanish Harlem does not and will never have a legal jurisdiction in Manhattan or other boroughs. But I'm sure many people on this forum already knew that since the same is true in dozens of other cities.

All in all, the ethnic makeup in Washington Heights should not be a reason to be scared to live there. And this wouldn't even be a topic of conversation if OP did not introduce ethnicity (which occurred for unknown reasons) into this conversation by bringing up the fact that WH is mainly Dominican.

Can't catch a break on this topic, it seems :corny:

Congrats! I heard from them the other day too. The tuition is pretty expensive. I'm hoping I qualify for some sort of funding.

You don't have to defend yourself. As someone who was born and raised in the area, you have a unique perspective that prospective students could learn from. As a Bay Area native myself, I would be happy to try and help for anyone planning to attend a program there. Just know that I grew up in the suburbs, so my information may be limited. My brother is at UC Davis, so I might be able to get him to cough up some info on quality of life there, though keep in mind that he's a college student, so his perspective may not be what a grad student is looking for.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of accurate information, if you go to GWU, there is a possibility that you may get hit by a car everyday as you go from the metro station to the Milken building. DC drivers are insane! But, don't let that stop you from attending; I love my school and could not imagine myself going anywhere else. Just trying to show that no matter where you go, there is always going to be something about it that makes you uneasy, whether it's crazy drivers, loud mouths, or drunks. You are probably more likely to be hurt by a fellow classmate than a stranger off the street. As usual, do your homework on places to live so that you are in the safest place possible. If you're uncomfortable around your campus alone, come and go with friends. Most campuses in dangerous neighborhoods have some kind of campus security to help you feel safe while your around campus. After that, it's up to you to use common sense (don't walk through a dangerous neighborhood to go home).

Did you know that people smoke right in front of Milken (PH) and Ross (Med)? Ridiculous!

Something interesting happened when I contacted UPitt regarding my application, I applied to BCHS department. I emailed them for an update on Monday 2/29 and I received this on 3/1:

"Decisions of this type are not easy to make and I want to assure you that there has been a thorough review of your application and its supporting materials. "

In my rejection letter I am being told that a thorough review was in place, when I find that hard to believe after my e-mail requested an update after over six weeks of the application being submitted.

This is not my first rejection so I'm not bitter or was even clutching to UPitt, but I do think this is a situation where my application may have been more of a quick decision than "thoroughly reviewed".

Has anyone else experienced this? I know some schools (though not admittedly) will throw out applications based on certain GPAs or GREs, but don't tell me you did a "thorough review" when you responded to my email almost less than 24 hours.

Thoughts?

Hi there!!
I have yet to hear ANYTHING about financial aid from Emory.... when I go into opus, it says my aid is pending (a designation that first appeared last week). Hopefully now that the FAFSA deadline has passed maybe we will get some info?
 
Fellow JHSPH admitted students: I just called Hopkins, and they said MPH scholarship recipients will be notified by email in late March- early April. We're in the homestretch!

I won't be able to attend, but please do share any strong impressions you have after attending. I'll actually be in the area attending an information session weekend for the social work program at Pitt. I'd love to drop by the MPH events, but the social work folks are paying for me to be there so I figure I shouldn't skip out on any of their offerings. I'm definitely headed to Pitt in the fall (joint MPH/MSW) and I'm excited about visiting and getting a feel for the place.
 
I just RSVPed for the preview day at GW. Pretty excited! Has anyone heard anything about an admitted students day at Maryland?

If this helps, I had a sub 3.0 GPA and was admitted to BCHS at Pitt. Also, before I applied, I asked someone in admissions if they screened out any applicants and they told me they do not. I think it's possible that they accidentally forgot to email you your decision originally and then your email reminded them.

I called them a few days ago because I was trying to plan all my visits out and they said notification hasn't got out yet but it'll be on Friday, April 8th. And they're only offering that one day, unlike some other schools that have 2 dates to choose from.
 
I know this has been mentioned before, but make sure to contact your schools about travel reimbursement for preview days! It worked for me as well.
 
Has anyone received merit based aid from Emory? I haven't seen anyone on here mention it.

Also for the person who posted about UNC Health Behavior, there are only about 40 people in the admitted students Facebook group, so I'm sure some more decisions are coming out soon. If everybody admitted has joined that group that seems a little low to admit for the upcoming class, considering that some people will go to other schools. Hopefully you'll hear soon!

I've inquired U-Mich about a travel grant for their accepted students day and I will report back if I get anything. I hope I do, I'll be coming from NJ. Ugh.

Now that most of us have heard back from all of our schools, it's time to start calculating how much everything costs. As you may already know, some schools make it difficult to calculate your total tuition by hiding the numbers in PDFs and breaking it up by quarter/semester, etc. To make it a little easier for everyone, I created a public Google Sheet where you can see and help others determine how much each school's MPH costs for both in-state and out of state residents.

If you'd like to chip in, please put in the numbers you know for the corresponding schools. For example, UNC's full time semester cost for OOS(out of state) students is 16,444.52. There are 4 semesters so that number would get multiplied by 4 so the total is 65778.08. Please note that this is for the general 2-year MPH/MSPH programs so this might not apply for students doing the MPH/RN/MD/JD/LOL/MBA combos. Also, these estimates are just for tuition, not the external fees/health insurance, etc.

@judy03 @yogi17 @moonwave89 I received a travel grant from Columbia. Wasn't much, but it sure helps. Also, flights into Newark for preview day in April are extremely cheap right now.
 
So IU - Bloomington (my in-state school) just offered me a 50% tuition scholarship. Am I crazy for not even considering attending there because I'm so set on Emory? Emory didn't offer me any merit awards so I'll be taking it head on financially.

If it helps, I think most state schools view international students the same as OOS (at least they did in the 80's when my mom went to UCSB from India). For GW tuition, I changed the font color to red because I'm pretty sure it's going to increase by the time you guys start. It did for me. GW also highly suggests a summer session, as many classes are only offered during that term. Plus, the number of semesters you need to graduate is variable - most take two full years, but some people take only one year, some take three years, and I plan to finish in four semesters and one summer - so I'm leaving the semesters column blank. You also have the option of taking online classes, which are on a quarter system, so the terms overlap and can be very confusing. My advisor thinks I'm crazy for not wanting to do another summer; I've registered for five units on campus and another three online 😱.

Sweet! I'm a little surprised given that the institution as a whole seems bureaucratic and it's a known fact that going there will be expensive - but awesome that you got something. Can I ask who you emailed or spoke to to set it up? Any aid I can get would definitely be helpful! Are you flying in from across country?
 
Hi everyone! Congrats on acceptances!

I was wondering for those that got accepted into the University of Texas School of Public Health if they gotten any postal mail regarding admission acceptances? I already found out my acceptance via email, but it's been weeks since and I still haven't received anything. I also log onto myUTH account online and see that my status is incomplete. I know the administration at this school is a bit terrible; it takes them so long to answer my emails!

As for deferring, I know UT SPH requires you to apply in order to defer. Does anyone have any insight on this? Depending if I get accepted into a dietetic internship (which is under a year, and I'll find out April 3rd), I'll defer UT SPH for a year (if I decide to go to UT). Do you guys think the administration will be able to help me and meet the deadline of April 15th if I had to defer? It sucks not really knowing for another month!

Just some of my concerns, but any guidance is appreciated. Thanks 🙂 Good luck to those that are still waiting!

I emailed the generic admissions email address, [email protected]. I'll be flying from Florida!

I seriously needed the help lol. I'm only 20 years old, don't have any type of financial assistance from my parents, been working three jobs since my freshmen year of undergrad. I feel like many other students starting grad school have a few grand in the bank of life savings from working full-time jobs for a few years :shrug:

You're not. When your heart is set, it's done. I'm hoping financial aid helps me out a little, but I know I will be in some kind of debt going to Emory again. Thankfully, my tuition was mostly covered at Emory while I was an undergrad (which I could cry about now as someone who had a rough time during undergrad and with two degrees under my belt, oh man...). There are scholarships, job openings and such too so it's about cost/benefit analysis or as I like to call it, cost/loss, haha. I plan on working and just trying to look for fellowships/scholarships like mad now.:help::laugh:
