MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone received merit based aid from Emory? I haven't seen anyone on here mention it.

Also for the person who posted about UNC Health Behavior, there are only about 40 people in the admitted students Facebook group, so I'm sure some more decisions are coming out soon. If everybody admitted has joined that group that seems a little low to admit for the upcoming class, considering that some people will go to other schools. Hopefully you'll hear soon!

Thanks for this info! Last year UNC admitted 121 students into the health behavior department. If that number stays somewhat consistent year to year, that means less than half have been contacted (possibly). That's somewhat reassuring.

Hello again!

Now that most of us have heard back from all of our schools, it's time to start calculating how much everything costs. As you may already know, some schools make it difficult to calculate your total tuition by hiding the numbers in PDFs and breaking it up by quarter/semester, etc. To make it a little easier for everyone, I created a public Google Sheet where you can see and help others determine how much each school's MPH costs for both in-state and out of state residents.

If you'd like to chip in, please put in the numbers you know for the corresponding schools. For example, UNC's full time semester cost for OOS(out of state) students is 16,444.52. There are 4 semesters so that number would get multiplied by 4 so the total is 65778.08. Please note that this is for the general 2-year MPH/MSPH programs so this might not apply for students doing the MPH/RN/MD/JD/LOL/MBA combos. Also, these estimates are just for tuition, not the external fees/health insurance, etc.

Thank you!
Thank you for this! but if I had to be honest, I've never been so depressed looking at a spreadsheet. 😢

I emailed the generic admissions email address, [email protected]. I'll be flying from Florida!

I seriously needed the help lol. I'm only 20 years old, don't have any type of financial assistance from my parents, been working three jobs since my freshmen year of undergrad. I feel like many other students starting grad school have a few grand in the bank of life savings from working full-time jobs for a few years
Sigh, I know what you mean... I do have some experience since I graduated from undergrad a few years ago, but I'm sure everyone here knows that public health, although a rewarding field, has dismal pay, especially with only a BA.

Also (unrelated to this and I know I've asked about a million times), is anyone still waiting to hear back from Berkeley? I know their admitted students day is next week so it's likely that I've been rejected, but are people hearing back from them about decisions at all?

Hi,
Great idea to have all this info compiled in one place! One thing I've noticed is that there are inconsistencies in people putting down total cost (tuition, rent, fees, etc.) vs just tuition. It would be nice if we had two separate sections on the doc. One for tuition and one for total estimated cost (living expenses, etc included) to avoid confusion.

I got an email yestserday with the decision (got rejected:/)

@judy03 @yogi17 @moonwave89 I received a travel grant from Columbia. Wasn't much, but it sure helps. Also, flights into Newark for preview day in April are extremely cheap right now.

Thanks that definitely helps. I was wondering how you sent them your "budget". Was it like an estimate for costs or did you send them like tickets and reservations you already paid for?

Accepted to Brown, my dream school!! I am so excited to be starting this new chapter of my life at such a prestigious school and in such a beautiful city! Thank you everyone who participated in this forum, you made the wait much more bearable! Best of luck to everyone still awaiting decisions and to those who have to make difficult decisions themselves.

Long time lurker here..... I don't even know how to post, as I seem to be replying to colombiancoffeemph.....but anyone else applied to Penn? Quick scan shows no comment. I've been waiting since start of December. Any input from anyone?
And congrats to all.

Hey! you should join the Admitted students page on facebook if you are already on facebook, they have great info like that there. Someone asked a similar question and the response was ideally to get an Uber, they cost about 18-22 bucks from the airport. You could also go by train and then MARTA but they advised that it could be a little confusing if you've never been to Atlanta as you would have to change trains or get a train then a bus and takes more than an hour.

Can you post the link to the Facebook page?
Thanks!

Can everyone who has seen a facebook page for admitted students post links? I think a lot of people have been looking for various school groups

Good idea! Feel free to add an annual living expenses/rent column. That value may be a little bit more subjective though so it should be backed by a citation.
I noticed some schools like Yale provide a really good estimate for the entire cost on their webpage so if there is ever a value that looks off, it's best to check the source.

If this helps, I had a sub 3.0 GPA and was admitted to BCHS at Pitt. Also, before I applied, I asked someone in admissions if they screened out any applicants and they told me they do not. I think it's possible that they accidentally forgot to email you your decision originally and then your email reminded them.

Thanks for your response. I realize that GREs are really important to their admissions decisions, I am making this claim because they actually do have a cut off which I saw on the SOPHAS application. My GREs were sub and this may be an institution where that is hardly acceptable.

Longtime lurker here, but I made an account since I could answer your question. I applied to UPenn and got an acceptance on 2/9. I also got an acceptance to Columbia HPM today (even though the first visit day is on Friday), so don't be too discouraged if you haven't heard back yet.

So IU - Bloomington (my in-state school) just offered me a 50% tuition scholarship. Am I crazy for not even considering attending there because I'm so set on Emory? Emory didn't offer me any merit awards so I'll be taking it head on financially.
I chose not to apply to that school because I didn't find the city/area to be diverse which in my opinion was very important in my school choices. I applied for social/behavioral programs.

Congratulations! Did you receive any financial aid information?

I wonder why there is such a discrepancy in decision dates. You'd think all apps would be reviewed and then put in a accept/reject//wait list pile and be sent out.

For those accepted into Emory, how long did it take to get your admissions packet after you received your acceptance letter online?

I asked for this info from Penn some time ago. Penn said that if you apply by the priority deadline (February 1st ??), you will hear from them somewhere between March 1st and 15th. For those who submitted their application after the priority deadline, the decisions are sent out on a rolling basis. I submitted my application in November and it is the only decision that I have not yet had.

Also, from their website:
http://www.publichealth.med.upenn.edu/application_guidelines.shtml

I spoke to Moriah Hall (Associate Director) and she informed me about the March 15th date for priority applications. So, there is time yet.

I thought their priority deadline was Feb. 1? I submitted in mid-January (verified on 1/13) and got a decision on 2/9. I also applied to the Generalist MPH track. So it's possible that each of you applied to a different track, which may explain the difference.

Clearest lie, you must be impressive to get such an immediate decision

Yes, that is the priority deadline as I stated in my post "(February 1st ??)". The question marks were as I was not sure. The website also states the same. With that said, I only repeated what I was given by Moriah Hall. How the schools end up handing out decisions, I have realized, is anybody's guess. I think what is stated on the site are simply guidelines, maybe not carved in stone. And congratulations on your acceptance.

Thanks for the update. I guess they aren't ignoring people, maybe just me lol. And sorry to hear. Seems like you have some great alternatives though 🙂

Hello everybody!

Congratulations again for who get an acceptance! And good luck for who is choosing from different great schools. It's really nice to see everyday students posting thier stories of patience here, really I don't feel alone.

Is there anyone who applied for JHU-MPH 11-month program and did not hear from them yet?

It's been 12 weeks of waiting now 🙁

I''m not sure which one you're asking about, but I was verified for UPenn on 1/13 and verified for Columbia on 12/2. I also interviewed with Columbia on 2/14

Thank you for your answer!!! Sorry for not being specific, I was referring to Columbia : )...I applied for the priority deadline (12/01), and verified by 12/20...your post gives me a little hope.

Anyone get financial information from Brown? And anyone not hear yet?
All I was told in my decision letter was that I was "accepted with a financial award" and that I would be emailed with more information about the aforementioned award. I have not received the email, however, and there's no indication of how long it will take to receive this email.

EDIT: I just received my award email (5:11pm ET)

The letter says "I am pleased to tell you that you have been awarded financial support from your program" without any detail. By the way, can financial support mean loans...?

Also applied to Penn, it's my last school I'm waiting on. Unfortunately I'm very close to a decision anyway!

I was rejected this morning from Berkeley's dual degree program (MSW/MPH). WUSTL is my only acceptance. I received no scholarship, so I think I must look like a full-pay revenue source to them. I'm likely declining and will not be going anywhere in the Fall. I cannot justify $100K + in debt to complete the MSW/MPH program there. If they really thought I was a desirable candidate, they would have given me scholarship funds.

I honestly expected them to ask for that type of information, but they didn't. I sent an email explaining that I simply did not have the funds to pay for travel and that my FAFSA EFC is zero.

I did not have any tickets or reservations paid for before I asked for the grant because I genuinely cannot afford those things without financial assistance from the school.

Also applied to Penn, it's my last school I'm waiting on. Unfortunately I'm very close to a decision anyway!

Has Boston been able to maintain their lead as your top pick?

You're not alone in the waiting game, I too am yet to know my fate!
However, I received an email from them about a week ago advising me on a certain external scholarship I'm eligible to apply for. Funny enough though, the wording used in the email vaguely suggested that I had gotten in! My heart skipped a beat and I have been sitting on edge since! Don't know whether to celebrate or not but keeping my fingers crossed!
And may the odds be ever in our favor 😀

I am not sure if it would be a good idea to have a total cost column, as things like rent and personal expenses are quite variable. For example, when GWU sent me my offer letter, they anticipated that my total CoA would be about $110,000 for the program (assuming two years). Based on my tuition, fees, and outside spendings, I have estimated my total cost to be about $87,000 for the full two years, though it will probably increase next year with the tuition fees.

I wanted to add more info regarding my Brown financial award. I received a 25% partial tuition scholarship and I was also invited to be a Global Health Scholar, which also grants a 25% tuition scholarship. Overall I received 50% off tuition, which is SO amazing. I am super happy and excited.

Anyone else invited to be a Global Health Scholar or receive an assistantship?

I can see how "Total Cost" might be misinterpreted to include rent, etc. I changed the column names to "Total Tuition".

Sort of, in the top two, yea. 🙂
Boston/Columbia are in the running, I'm waiting on their need based aid offers to see where I'll spend less. I'm also looking at all the mentioned "issues" of Columbia... Yikes. GWU was a great merit scholarship but I'm still not feeling DC. Maybe for an internship, but not for years at a time 😉

My own city waitlisted me for scholarships. Hmph. This contributes to why I don't like Houston!

Just wanted to let everyone know that when I attended the financial aid chat session at Columbia, the financial aid advisors said that the most anyone will get in need-based grant/scholarship is $5000 a year. The rest will be merit scholarships (if you meet the requirements) and loans. 🙁 hope that helps in your decision making while waiting

Sounds like Minnesota might be a good pick for you as well. 50k total tuition minus your awarded 20k would get you an MPH degree for roughly 30k which is the lowest I've seen for an OOS candidate.

Yup! They actually called me yesterday and gave me that total of 10k need based, but I won't trust it until I receive the confirmation letter/email. That brings it to -35 for Columbia, still waiting on the others. The cost of functioning/living in NY, eeeehhhh.

Yeah, they are up there, I need to talk to them more directly about their program to see if it is a good fit for bioethics/clinical ethics and policy. I love their going rate, but the others have more future possibilities. Darn you Minnesota, for being so tempting!

I have seen a couple people mention Emory's fb page. Does anyone have the link? Was it sent to you in an email? Thanks!

Thanks, but I am not BSHE, I am Environmental Health. Perhaps they don't have one. I will double check my email.
