MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It means that the department/program you have applied to thinks you're good enough for admission but the ultimate decision about whether or not to admit you is up to the graduate school. As someone who used to work in graduate admissions, 99.99% of the time, "recommended" just means "accepted". Congrats!

Thank you!!! and thanks for clarifying! 🙂🙂🙂

Anyone's Columbia application update (for those who have accepted). I still just see the preview application proof- assuming official decision letter and any scholarship info hasn't been uploaded yet.

Thanks!

I'm thinking it won't be updated. Everyone has the "Application proof" -- the acceptance letter pops up when you click "View Update" under "Status Update". I imagine since we have only one update (i.e. no additional letter re: scholarship), they don't create a "Decision Letter" link...... but this is purely speculation.

In at UC Berkeley and University of Washington! Got the Cal email while I was reading the UW email. Very overwhelming moment. 😱

Congrats! That had to feel amazing 🙂 Do you know which school you're leaning towards? I applied to UW MPH and had an interview but still waiting to hear back.

It did! 🙂 To be totally honest...I am not sure! I applied to the UW Masters fellowship that was sent around a few times, so that would definitely help me decide. I also am not sure how much of a difference an MS (UW) vs MPH (UCB) might make in my ideal career path/life journey/struggle to find the job of my dreams, haha.

Congratulations! I'm hoping to hear something soon about the part-time online MPH program. When did you submit your application and when was it verified? Also, do you mind if I ask your stats? Again, congratulations. 🙂

Absolutely! Here's my info. I need an online/part-time MPH program, because I want to continue working for my current organization/living in Portland, OR. JHSPH's online/part-time MPH program seems significantly stronger than the alternatives. I particularly like that they do not award executive degrees. Additionally, the MPH program available in Portland is young and not really geared towards part-time students.

Undergrad School: Saint Louis University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: From SOPHAS, Undergrad GPA: 3.63. Upper Division GPA: 3.85
Major/Minor: Economics / Mathematics
GradGPA (if applicable): N/A
Grad Studies (if applicable): N/A
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): V 160, Q 160, AW 3.5
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
- 2.5 years as a hospital consultant.
- 1 year as a hospital project manager (current job).
- 3 years as a part-time research analyst for the Penn State Prevention Research Center. I did statistical work (using SAS) for a youth programming community interventional study in their pilot community. They've expanded to additional communities after a successful study in their pilot city. I reported directly to the PI.
- Summer internship in college for a health advocacy organization.

Special factors
- Four letters of recommendation: 1 undergrad professor (Health Economist - took two of her classes and one independent study. Have maintained a strong relationship since graduating.), 1 Penn State PI, 1 hospital director (current boss), 1 consulting company VP.
- I did a lot of statistical coursework as an undergrad, including a year long sequence in calculus-based probability and statistics and a year long sequence in Biostatistics offered through SLU's SPH. I really focused on my quantitative skills in my SOP.
- I did not take a Biology class as an undergraduate. I did not realize this was truly a hard requisite for admission to the program, so I submitted by application without this coursework on 10/04. My coursework was verified on 11/23 and I received an email on 12/01 from JHSPH saying they'd received my application. I got an email on 12/27 from the Admissions Coordinator asking if I planned on completing the requisite Biology coursework before matriculating into the program. So, I quickly signed up for a Biology class at the local community college and submitted the needed information to the Admissions Coordinator on 12/28. She informed me that my application was 'now complete.' So, it seems that my submission date was actually 12/28.
- I applied for the Bloomberg Fellowship on 12/19.
- My statement of purpose addressed the partial disconnect between the hospital and research work I've been involved in (i.e. not much relationship between the two). I was honest about my uncertainty related to career goals. More specifically, I let the adcom know that I'm torn between more statistical work/research and administration in a hospital or government setting. I did drive home how a MPH would be useful for both career paths, though.
- I was somewhat worried about my AW score (I had gotten a 5 when I took the GRE as an undergrad, but those scores expired a couple of years ago). Either it didn't matter or the adcom picked up that I was very busy when I took the GRE (demanding full time and part time jobs). I only had time to do brief quantitative prep. OR my coursework/SOP demonstrated that I have strong enough writing skills. Who knows?

Congrats on all the acceptances!

Just spoke with the GW financial aid office, apparently those who applied before 1/23 have already been notified of scholarships.

Anyone here going to be at CROI next week? It's a pretty public health heavy conference

Not me, but my boss is as well as a couple of my professors are going. I think you have to be an active researcher with an accepted abstract or practitioner in the HIV/AIDS realm in order to attend, but I'm not 100% sure. They do upload podcasts from the conference to their website after the fact. They're really great to watch if your interested in HIV/AIDS.

I'll be there presenting a poster! Hoping to find some labs from the schools I applied to and schmooze my way into some sort of paid assistantship or something.

I totally hear that! I had to decide between the MS (nutrition focus) vs. MPH (nutrition focus) when applying to UW and I had to really sit and consider it... I also considered applying to the UW fellowship but talked myself out of it thinking I wouldn't get it anyways, so I hope you get it! 🙂

Does a "pay admissions deposit" on OPUS without an official letter basically mean admission?
The pay button showed up to me at least a week before I saw my official acceptance letter in OPUS. I thought it was them "preparing" to accept me and I saw someone experienced the same thing before they got accepted.

Emory BSHE people - I couldn't take the wait anymore so I called Admissions. They said decisions will be released in the next few minutes!! AHH!! :highfive:

Thank you for this!!! I hope the outcome is favorable!!

IN at Yale for EMD!!! I can't believe it, this is so exciting!!!
May I ask when you verified/applied to Yale? I called Yale the other day and they told me they were behind in reviewing applications and may not get some decisions out until April! It is the only school I have not heard back from, and I am trying to gauge when I will hear. They could not tell me where my application is in the process. Thanks!

Also, congrats! I applied to EMD, too. Very exciting!!

Spoke on the phone with Harvard admissions office, and they said expect MPH decisions within the next few weeks... thanks for that.

Anybody have insight into if these are all coming out at once/in distinct batches/trickling out? It's seemed like it might be a trickle, although I'd have thought more than one person on here would have gotten a decision by now :eyebrow:

Admissions office said decisions for programs starting in the summer come out first, then the fall starting programs.

Congrats!! So awesome! Email or portal?
Portal! I received an email at 3:25 that my first choice department didn't receive a favorable decision and it was being forwarded to BSHE, but my admissions decision is available in OPUS (checked at 2:00am Central Time)

I had that as well and when I refreshed the page, my decision letter was available right above the "pay admission deposit" option!

They usually release it in batches, but we'll just have to wait and see. The professor I talked to said they'll release it in 1-2 weeks. Usually by beginning March, all the decisions are out.

Good to know! I don't expect to get in, but if for some reason I do, but don't find that out fairly soon, then I won't be able to go to accepted students' day for one of my few potential schools based on how everything is timed... but time will tell! 🙂

Finally got an email from Emory regarding my acceptance. They linked me to the admitted students portal (which you can't access without login info) and they said the login info could be found by viewing the image below in the email...unfortunately whatever that image was supposed to do or show...it doesn't work, so I have no login info 🙁 Hopefully they get back to me about that soon because these communication mishaps with Emory are really adding up and I'm getting antsy lol

Thank you!! I applied to Yale on 11/30 and my application was marked complete on 12/18. I emailed YSPH admissions earlier this week and I was told to expect decisions before the end of next week (Feb 17) for those whose applications were verified right before the holidays. I hope you receive positive news from them soon!

Yup, you and me both. The whole 'clicking the image to get log in information' is a bit odd. Nothing happens when I click the image.

Right??? It seems SO ODD. I felt so stupid at first for not being able to figure it out, but after passing it around it seems they just forgot to embed a link or something. Sucks that they emailed it out at 5 on a Friday so now my frantic reply is going to sit over the weekend...oh well

Don't say that! Remain positive. Unlike most schools, they don't look at scores as a deciding factor. They prioritize experience and view the candidate holistically - or so they say. I don't know your stats, but you have as much a chance as any. 🙂

I didn't mean to sound so negative -- I just don't think I'm the strongest candidate. It's also all complicated by the fact that I applied for a very different program at Harvard than I did at the other two schools I applied to... and making a decision already feels difficult with just the other two schools as possibilities! :dead: It may all come down to money in the end. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Got into Yale SBS!! 🙂 Does anyone know when they'll give out decisions about merit scholarships?

Should be sometime between now and 3/1, but I suspect sooner per what the financial aid office told me.

I am so unimpressed with Emory right now. I got this email today, which I think means that I didn't get into my first choice and they are forwarding it, but look at this letter. I didn't white out, delete or change it in anyway!

I need a little confidence boost/advice. Am I reaching for the stars here? I have a strong personal statement and letters of rec. My GPA is frightening, but I have this semester that will give me a little boost. Last 3 semesters I've averaged a 3.5, freshman and sophomore year did not do me justice. Any other nutrition related programs I should look into for safety?! Dietetic internship apps are looking bleak

I also got that email! To me, it looks incompetent and I really did not expect this kind of experience dealing with Emory.
