MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know someone who got a MPP at JHU and then got a PhD in Public Health there - studying food policy. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

1. What jobs are you interested in obtaining after graduating? I'd look up your "dream" or "ideal" jobs on indeed, glassdoor, etc. and see what degrees they require-if they tend to require one of the degrees over another, then you have your answer.
2. Are you more interested in a career in international health or health policy and management? (Granted, the two can certainly overlap!)
3. What skills are you hoping to obtain from your degree? Look at the coursework for both degrees and compare - see which one better fits your wants and needs.

Thanks! I'll think carefully about this!

Also rejected from Harvard! Actually really relieved tbh. The program I applied for there (Environmental Health) was totally different from others I applied to (and, ultimately, not the best fit for me).

I still haven't made a definitive decision, but I'm really glad I only applied to three schools so I don't have to weigh a lot of options!

Congrats on your scholarship! I went to UCLA's admitted student day and fell in love, but so far I haven't received any funding from them 🙁

Were you notified earlier that you were nominated for something at UCLA or did or come out of the blue?

I've been nominated for funding at Cal but haven't gotten a final notice. If I get something at Cal I'm thinking I'll play the same game as you, just reversed. I also need to negotiate in-state tuition at both.

What programs are you in at Cal and UCLA? What factors are weighing on your decision besides funding?
----
The UCLA $10K came in unexpectedly through an email from Jennifer O'brien.
Congrats on your nomination. At least you know they are considering you for something. I thought Cal didn't award anyone anything until after we accept.
I applied to the Community Health Sciences at UCLA and Health & Social Behavior at UC Berkeley.
I believe we are both fortunate that we have the opportunity to chose between UCLA and UC Berkeley. I personally want to attend Cal because I have a solid group of friends who live in the bay area. Also, I have been able to establish a network in the Bay area through out my undergraduate at UC Davis. Lastly, UC Berkeley has a lot of resources that cater to Latino immigrant populations, which is ultimately what I want to do. How about you? What factors are you considering.

I got about $37K in financial aid (Direct Unsubsidized Loan) from Hopkins. Anyone else hear back about aid?

Congratulations on your fellowship! I'm surprised that you weren't notified until today, since when I called early last week they said all awards had been sent out already. Are you in-state?
Thank you! Yes. I am in state.

If anyone is still waiting on merit/need-based aid from Berkeley, I asked the financial aids office and all merit/need-based scholarships have gone out to the nominees, recipients, and alternates. You would have been notified by now if you received one.

guys what happens when you say you "don't want loans" to financial aid? that is what i checked off because i don't want to take out loans, just need help subsidizing the money i have saved

Are you sure this is the case for need-based aid as well, or just for merit aid? I was told that need based aid is not offered until after you commit.

This is the response I got from their office of financial aids and admission: "with regards to merit and need-based funding, all nominees/alternatives and recipients have already been notified" so I think this would mean that the all the fundings (besides maybe loans and work study) have gone out. I agree that the whole "commitment then financial aids package" timeline is stressful.

I plan to wear business casual. I did not find information from UCI on a dress code.

Likewise...I'm assuming its business casual unless otherwise specified. But, even for Cal and Columbia, they don't specify dress code at all LOL

The MPH Admissions Officer at UCLA said he'd get back to me this past Monday, but so far he hasn't contacted me. I want to know the status of my app but I also don't want to poke around too much. I know I should wait to hear their response but San Diego State's deadline to accept is March 15th. Gah. What to do? :/

Contact them again and explain your situation. Also, ask San Diego for an extension.

Just tried to attend Columbia's admitted students and alumni mixer in Philadelphia. Showed up to the venue (a local bar), staff were like "we have no idea what you're talking about." I show them my confirmation email from the university, they're like nope nothing like that happening here. The hostess was like "that's bull****." So I guess no mixer for me...or anyone? :eyebrow:

Wow. I'm going to give them a call to try and talk to someone about that. I had been under the impression that it was only merit aid that was disbursed prior to committing, but if it's need-based grants as well such that all that's left after you commit is a loan package...yikes.

So the UCLA admissions officer replied, said he was forwarding the departmen's decision to the graduate-wide committee for approval! So I'm thinking they're recommending me for admission?
I had been in contact with SDSU, and they suggested that I hear back from other schools first before asking for an extension. UCLA should have a reply before April 1st, so I asked SD for an extension of about two weeks. Let's see what they say.
You can always email the schools and ask for an extension. They're pretty lenient on that stuff if you have ample time/reason

I'm planning to go to the one in Boston so this made me kinda worried. The one in Boston is on 3/23. I think I read somewhere that the philly one is on 3/15.

Visiting Drexel tomorrow! If there's anything people want to know or want me to ask, lmk! The fellowship recipients have a meeting with the Dean in addition to the regular events so I expect I'll be able to get a lot of questions in.

I would love to hear what current students have to say about their experience at the department. Additionally, the fellowship gives you paid 15 hour/week RA, so it would be great to know if they would allow us to work more, the normal 20 hr/week, if the supervisor is okay with it too? Will be looking fwd to what you have to say, since Drexel is looking more and more realistic choice for me!

Just received my acceptance to Columbia for the Global PH program! However, the acceptance letter had no mention of funding. Should I expect that in a separate letter or does that mean that I'm not being offered any funding?

As I understand it, you receive information about merit-based scholarships with your acceptance letter. Need-based aid can come later, though.

Thank you for your response. I was really hoping to get funding, so this is disappointing, especially since I do not think I qualify for need based aid.

I am also planning on going to the one in Boston, maybe call beforehand and confirm with Columbia that alumni are registered to attend?

Just got my package from UW. All loans. Then saw a glimmer of hope in the sentence "visit your 'Resources' tab to see other eligible funds and work-study." Only listed resource? Myself, and the proposed out of pocket student contribution. +pity+

For Columbia, my merit scholarship info was in a separate scholarship letter, not the acceptance letter - so maybe check the portal again for another letter? I actually missed seeing mine the first two times I logged in!

The website says the Philly one was yesterday, 3/9: https://www.mailman.columbia.edu/research/welcome-admitted-students/visit. I would recommend calling to confirm with respect to the Boston event. I am still waiting for a response from the admissions office as to what happened last night...

That is so frustrating! Sorry you had to deal with that! All of Columbia's logistics problems and not hearing from the finaid office yet (even though they told us we would this week) are really driving me away..

Any other trans folks out there dealing with weird **** in trying to get federal aid? I was contacted a few weeks ago about how I'm over 26 and never registered with the Selective Service so they can't give me money until I provide proof that I wasn't required to register. The government is being slow in sending me the necessary letter and it's driving me nuts :dead: I just want my financial aid packages!

I m trying to view mine and can't figure out my "system key" for obtaining my UW NetID. Where do I find the system key?

If you log in to your application portal and open your application, you should see the ID #s you need to obtain your UW NetID.

@people who got into columbia, do any of you have 'preview application proof' instead of decision letter on your portal? if so, what does it mean?
Yes, I have preview application too. No idea what it means!

Yes, I have preview application too. No idea what it means!

My understanding:
I think everybody has that. It says: "This is a proof of your application and is for your records only. Do not send this proof by mail as your application." which seems to imply that it is an overview of your app/acceptance. If you have a decision letter and no scholarship letter, you can just access the acceptance by clicking on "View Update". When there was more than one update, i.e. two different letters, people got links like "Decision Letter"......... although I may be wrong. I don't know for sure that rejections also show up "View Update". 😕

This is correct. The preview is just a PDF copy of your application for your records.

SBS... know anyone waiting for that as well? If there admit day is 3/31...Id hope theyd quickly churn out the rest of decisions

I believe that HSB and SBS are the same thing at Harvard.

Just wondering, has anyone heard anything from Harvard Global Health MPH this week other than "yeah, sometime in the next 2-3 weeks"?
