Hi Folks,

Please can someone please advice as appropriate.

I have a very close friend who serves as member of a steering committee for scholarships in a school of public health. He/she is actually very influential.

My worry is, will it be nice/ok to ask her if S/He can include or select me for the award.

Please help me out!

I would think it would be unethical. You should use the same application/evaluation process as everyone else. However, we have all heard of people using their "connections" to gain admissions or funding, and if you mentioned to that person that you applied for it then that may help. Directly asking for it just seems wrong to me.

No, it puts people in an awkward position. You should obviously be free to tell her about your interest in the school--and if she brings up her position organically it's a different story--but don't just outright say that you want them to give you $$$. Use discretion and maybe it'll trigger a positive memory that'll help you out.
