First time post, new to SDN
Some background details relevant to my question:
URM, disadvantaged
2.88 cGPA, (double degree in philosophy and Biology), 3.7 sGPA and cGPA (graduate dual master program (MS/MBA) at a top 15 school), will begin MBA portion in the spring.
Yet to take the MCAT, but currently preparing to take the test in January. It goes without saying that given my poor undergrad performance, a low MCAT score is out of the question. Aiming for at least a 510.
I have strong experiences in Research (undergrad plus current paid employment in a lab), Clinical (medical scribe), nonclinical volunteering (at least 3.5 years not sure the number of hours), and leadership roles.
The problem is I’m extremely worried about my uGPA, both the cumulative and science; and that I’ll get screened out whenever I do apply. I had extenuating circumstances and challenges beyond my control, during undergrad but even still, it’s still terribly low. I’m considering taking some upper level classes at a local community college to bring it up, at least just enough to a 3.0, while also continuing with my graduate program. I just finished taking an A&P I class/lab at the cc over the summer, to test things out and I seemed to be able to balance the workload with everything else I had going on. All while achieving my expected outcome in terms of grade.
Taking enough credits to achieve this 3.0 goal would require I take more classes and 2 or 3 online classes between now and next year when I begin med school applicatios. However, I plan to take most of my classes there in in-person format.
Will taking this route: taking cc classes as well as some online cc classes hurt me with med school more than it will help me? Does it make a difference that they will all be upper level classes with some including labs? Are my concern that I could be screened out legitimate? I understand AAMCAS don’t really have an indicator for what classes is taken online vs. in person but question about that could be asked on secondary for some schools.
Please provide any comments. I sincerely would appreciate it. Thank you.
