MSKCC summer fellowship 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also applied, looking to see if anyone has heard back yet. In previous threads it seems the earliest answers come in at 3 weeks after the application closes.

On a related note, did anyone apply to the MD Anderson summer program?

Has anyone heard back yet? I'm getting a little nervous about this but maybe it is still a little early in the process.

I applied as well, and have not heard back yet!

Applied 1 minute before the deadline, haven't heard back yet. So if they go in order I should be last to hear.

From what I've heard, it seems that when you hear back depends on which projects you applied to, and how quickly those project managers review their applications and make selections.

Yeah, I've heard it's very project dependent as well. It seems like we're all in the same boat for now. Waiting. Urgh

I don't think they go in order since there's no centralized selection process. Or do I have that wrong and there is one?

You are correct, there is no real order. It depends on when the PI for each individual project gets around to evaluating applicants. I'm also waiting to hear back! Good luck everybody!

Any updates on this front?

I applied as well but have not heard back yet. Do you guys know what types of experiences they were looking for to be considered a competitive applicant?

I'm guessing previous research experience and academic background related to the projects you applied to would be the the things they look for. Ugh, this wait is killing me.

Tomorrow is the 1 more month mark for notification so maybe they'll start sending the acceptances out then?

Hey all. I know for a fact that someone got an interview for a project on 2/1: interviews/acceptances are rolling so I think it's just a matter of how quick the PIs are to turnaround the applications.

Thanks for the update-- guess you wouldn't know what project...

Do you happen to know if all labs require an interview?

Frankly, I was not initially aware that there would be any at all until I was told otherwise. As to whether all labs will require one: your guess is as good as mine. The interview was by Skype, in case you were worried about having to travel.

Thanks a lot for the update. Do you happen to know if the person who interviewed has already heard back or not? Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. Dang, my research didn't seem to line up with anything (organic chemistry medication synthesis) but I will just have to hope for the best.

I was just going off of conjecture and second hand information, so don't take my word for it. But best of luck to you. And me 😀

🙂 no worries. I'm just neurotic, as always.

Wonder when they will send emails out

Have any others been contacted for an interview? I wonder how common interviews are.

I also applied and am anxiously waiting! Good luck to all 🙂

I got an invite to interview. Interviewed maybe 3 weeks ago and she said something about a deadline for submitting top names and I'd hear mid feburary. Unsure how the rolling process works because she said she interviewed two other people

Ha, now everyone without an interview: anxiety level just shot through the roof.

Just about to give up hope now, no interview invite or anything [emoji51]

Accepted to this program last week. No interview, an email simply showed up! Keep the hope alive all!

Time to pack it up guys, it's over. Historically acceptances come in one wave.

I give up on this program, lol.
As did I. Funny thing? I worked there in a pretty legit (professional staff) position doing the exact research I was hoping to do this summer, except in a different department. Go figure.

It was always a longshot, everyone wants to live in NY for the summer. Had to make sure I diversified my summer applications to be safe.

That's rough. I guess if you didn't get it despite your previous work there, it was a real long shot for someone like me. But here's to hoping that other programs will show us more love!

Also, is there a second wave of acceptances ever? or is there only one?

Checked past year's threads: historically second week of February is the one and only time SDNers report acceptances (I imagine the mid-March 'acceptance deadline' is to buy labs time to get in contact with their backups, but I doubt they have any trouble with that). I'm holding out for CUPID but realistically, they get like 1k applications for fewer spots. I suppose now isn't a bad time to look for airfare deals for vacation.

Those who have been accepted: consider yourself incredibly lucky. You might want to buy a lottery ticket with all that luck.

Hi all-- Just wanted to say I received an acceptance to the program this past Friday! 🙂 AND I didn't get an invite to interview.

The email says that in case people ask, to let them know that the process is still rolling, so depending on whether students decline the opportunity, or if the students come with their own external sources of funding, they may still take on additional students, so don't give up hope! Best of luck to all!

Ha, not to be the pessimist, but I heard the same line in some variation during interview season.

Well then, officially movin' on...

Got the denial email a little bit ago now.

Sorry to hear that. I'm still in limbo, which almost feels torturous.
I hope you're the exception, but all my classmates were denied in the span of a couple days. I imagine it has something to do with when the project receives word from the 'chosen one.'

I contacted my old department manager at MSKCC and told them I didn't get the fellowship and they were surprised to say the least. While completely arbitrary and purely conjecture, my manager thought it had something to do with having 'too much experience' for the project; the project PI wouldn't be meeting the goals of the fellowship by training someone who already has industry experience with the work. The Fellowship is intended to train a relatively bright, but naive student (one who hasn't had a terrible amount of experience with the specific project) to give them a 'taste' of translational medicine. For those who had near identical experience and training with their selected projects and were not selected for the Fellowship, it might have come down to idea of: why train someone who has already been trained? It would not serve the educational goals of the PI and program. Honestly, it sucks for those who applied with applicable experience and could hit the ground running.

I guess I won't be in the city this summer.

I haven't heard yet either, although I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
