MSKCC Summer Fellowship 2021

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all, submitted my application last night! Super excited for the chance to be back home in NYC for the summer, my old roommates have already agreed to let me live with them again if I get accepted haha, just a 30min bike ride over the queensboro - ill be able to skip leg day.

According to the website, admissions will be on a rolling basis, but also all applicants will know by January 15th so seems we'll know pretty soon! This is great since I will have to get on top of alternative summer plans if MSKCC, unfortunately, doesn't work out.

OOC, if you don't mind divulging, what projects did yall submit for? Most of my time on the application was spent trying to choose a project lolol, they were all quite interesting. I ended up selecting two - one on addiction and cancer pain and another about infections post-BMT.

Ooo I hope so. I found older documents from a couple years ago listing it around ~5800. Was really hoping it would be at least above minimum wage.

A 7k stipend + side tutoring hustle would make managing my finances this summer far more doable.
I saw it on a brochure my school sent out for this year, so it should be correct!

I applied to the addiction and cancer pain as well as one about perioperative outcomes. What does rolling basis mean? Do the applicants who submitted earlier get preference or do they accept from everyone and those who decline open up spots for more acceptances?

I believe it is the latter, but I could be wrong.

My understanding is the latter as well.

Good luck everyone!

Has anyone heard any updates yet? Based on previous years, it looks like some decisions may be released this week

Yes! Everyone should be hearing back with something on the 15th.
I think some people are supposed to hear before the 15th because its rolling and people have 3 business days to accept or reject the offer before they move onto the second choice. It says on the website that everyone will have a decision by the 15th and its rolling, so it doesn't really make sense for all decisions be released on that day. Everyone should know whether or not they were accepted by the 15th though.

LOL you overanalyzed my message what I meant to say is that whether we hear back or not everyone will hear back by the 15th.

Honestly glad that all the notifications here are more people not hearing back rather than people beginning to hear back 😆

also whoospies if I give any of you a heart attack with this notification 😛
It's looking like next week is gonna be a busy week at MSK haha

Anyone hear back yet?? I feel like they wouldve had to have send out some decisions by now so everyone can hear back by the 15th??

It's very possible they may just opt for a big dump on the 15th, and then pull people later on if people decline.

Anyone else procrastinate applying to other summer programs because they're banking on this one :X lmao

Well I also don't want to waste my professors times getting a summer project going if I'm just going to end up at MSK.

just cut me loose already aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

Yup agreed, I haven't reached out to anyone at my home institution for this same fear (that and my school's stipend is laughable so half my summer will be working part-time rather than focusing on research).

I'm just concerned that we may be part of the majority of people that applied and will be denied. . . I wish at least one person here had heard back

See the positive in it, if one person here heard back that would confirm things are rolling out and that we weren't in it (even if it may vary study by study).

It's hard to gather how many people are on SDN who also applied to MSKCC, but I'd say it's good news that all the people in this thread have not heard anything yet.

after a neurotic deep dive, most years theres been at least one person that reported an acceptance on SDN. It does seem like they changed the application timeline quite a bit this year though plus covid so who knows whats going on

I had an interview last week with the PI but radio silence since. Hoping to hear anything yay/nay by Friday.
That's awesome, congrats! Sounds like good news on your part tbh since I doubt the PI wanted to interview every candidate that submitted an app.

Hope the two projects I applied to weren't interviewing people haha.

I just wanted to say there are other avenues for summer research at MSKCC if you don't get into this program. I was not part of the formal summer program but I did research at MSKCC the summer after my MS1 and made ~$7,000 and got > 5 publications prior to ERAS apps. I found the lab through a personal connection (basically asked a professor at my institution if he knew anyone at MSKCC and he connected me). A med school colleague also worked out a similar deal with a lab and was paid ~$30/hour.

Thank you for this! Are PIs usually fine with medical students working just for the summer?
