I don't know what this April 15th thing is...but the AAMC certainly recommends that MD/PhD applicants be given until May 15th, like all other applicants.

And this begs the question...since AMCAS will not be sharing our admissions status until May 15th, what exactly could a school do until then?

Well, it's not that they could do something so much, as it would be pretty lame to dick them around. Many programs have to start in the summer and need to set up rotations and such. However, I do think that schools would understand if you accepted at one but were still on the waitlist at a more preferable place. I don't think it's too much for them to ask that applicants make decisions regarding all the acceptances they currently hold.

Just my opinion though.

Sorry to hear about the UCSF and Stanford results. You've already gotten into some marvelous programs though, so you have some great options. UCLA is an excellent program and I'm sure you'd do well there. Good luck! 😀
 
I'm still waiting to hear about funding from Hopkins, so I'm not deciding anything until May 15th (the officical AAMC deadline)

What is this april 15th stuff anyways? I have heard nothing about that.
 
Guys,

Hopkins imposes the April 15th deadline for those who have been offered funding. 8 NIH-funded spots are available each year, 4 of them have accepted so far. So if the other four don't confirm by April 15th, four other lucky people will get phone calls on or around that time.

hey guys...

could you post if any of you have decided to withdraw after getting accepted (along with date info) to either Yale, Penn, or Hopkins?

in case you didnt notice, i'm trying to edge this thread up to the magical 1000 post milestone.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to Hopkins. I already turned in my letter to matriculate there. I've withdrawn all my acceptances short of Cornell and Yale - which I will do before April 15th.

I got the info about the four people who've confirmed from the MSTP Administrator while I revisited Hopkins on March 25-28. Four more spots remain though, and it's likely that an additional spot will open up b/c one of the four people accepted is bringing in his own money from another private fellowship. So I guess there are five more spots waiting to go after April 15th.

I wasn't sure about doing MD/PHD before, because I just wanted to be a doctor. I thought that's all I need to help people, right? How wrong I was. I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia (AA, visit <a href="http://www.aplastic.org" target="_blank">here</a> to learn more about it ) one and a half month ago. I went in and out of the hospital (the outpatient at yale-new haven & a local hospital) for lots and lots of tests (expensive too!) and was lucky to have some really good doctors. AA is a disease of the blood, so my dream of becoming a physician is still in jeopardy. However, I realize if I want to be a top hematologist (he he, I wanted to specialize in ENT before because I have allergy problems with my nose and other probs with my ears 🙄 ) I need continuing research! (There's no cure for AA besides bone marrow transplant(BMT) right now.) So there, I want to do MD/PHD if my condition clears. 🙂

So here's the question... which med schools accept international students for MD/PHD? I know Duke does... (that's actually my first choice for MD 😛 , haven't have a chance to think about PHD though...) can you guys complete the list for me? Thanks.

I'm so sorry to hear about your condition. But that's the spirit. I hope you will consider becoming an MD/PhD and joining us... Me and Original are both international students on this board, and we have been pretty fortunate in finding spots for foreign students. Most schools (especially private ones) will tell you that they only have NIH money, but after showing off your colors a bit, they normally stand down and let you in.

SO here's a list of the schools I KNOW that will accept foreign students with funding for their MD/PhD program

1. Columbia
2. Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering MD/PhD
3. Baylor
4. UT-Southwestern
5. Northwestern
6. Duke
7. Washington U. (St. Louis)
8. Yale
9. University of Chicago
10. Vanderbilt
11. Mount Sinai
12. U.Penn
13. University of Washington (Seattle)
14. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
15. Penn State University
16. Brown Medical School

These are all that I know... but there maybe others. I haven't tried, UMich, Pittsburgh, or Case Western, for example.

Univ. Southern California, accepts foreign students but you will need to find money for two years of medschool. They take care of the rest.

I just stumbled across the site recently and spent much time reading this incredible thread (could be the basis for a new series on the WB). Sonic has pledged his troth to JHU, but what about the rest of the gang? Don't leave us hanging.

Hey, I have a question for you guys. If I get my masters in Biophysics over the next year, would that effect the course requirements of the PhD part of the MD/PhD?? In other words, would it take me a year less to do my MD/PhD??

Depends. If you plan to do a PhD in Biophysics, you might have a portion of your coursework waived if your previous courses covered the same material. You should check with the programs you apply to for an opinion. Make sure you have syllabi of the courses you will be taking so the PhD program can make a decision about which courses they will waive.

Well, I called UCLA today to tell them that I'm coming. Feels pretty weird to have a decision made. Is anyone else going there?

i think it really depends on the program you are going to and if you are going into biophysics. I doubt it'd shorten your PhD much unless you did you PhD in the same lab as the one you did your MS in.

Good to have ya! Where will you be attending? Did you go to washu 2nd look? I think I might have read somewhere that you did. If so, what did you think? I'm going to see washu on Thursday. I'm pretty excited about it. They have this minority student revisit from April 18-21. I'll try to set-up a Duke 2nd look in May. I'll be graduating(MS) on my birthday in about 2 weeks :clap: and will start working at the end of May; so I have to go check the place out sometime in May if possible. In anycase, my leanings are very strongly towards Duke; but then with me, there's no telling.

congrats again on all your great acceptances! i've been keeping up with the posts but for the most part just been lurking. hey original (or anyone else that knows) i was wondering if duke had any set day to accept or decline MSTP acceptances? i'm just hoping for some movement off their waitlist!?! right now it looks like i'll be at penn next year, but for mainly personal reasons i think i'd be happier at duke.

Congrats on penn! I just looked at my Duke letter and there's no mention of a deadline to accept or decline. I guess that means they're going with the AMCAS May 15 deadline as well.
 
I think I'm going to be at UCSD next year. I was accepted at the med school at UCSF and I'm staying on the waitlist for the MSTP, but if I don't get in I'll be headed down to San Diego. I withdrew my acceptances recently from Penn, Wash U, and UCLA so if anyone is waiting on waitlists at any of these places you have moved up at least one spot. Good luck everyone.

What made you pick UCSD over Penn or Wash U?

I got a phone call from Dr Siliciano at Hopkins today... and he offered me the full MSTP funding package.

So it looks like I'm going to be joining you there Sonic.

anybody else going to hopkins?
 
Well my primary consideration was location...I wanted to be somewhere where I could see myself living for 8 years. But also, UCSD has an unbelieveable neuroscience program which is what I plan to get my PhD in. Penn and Wash U just didn't have the same caliber of research. Penn and Wash U's med schools are definitely on a higher tier than UCSD's, but being an MSTP I know that I won't have to worry too much about getting a top residency after I graduate. And UCSD's med school is still pretty damn good, it is still very young (only 30 yrs old) and I feel like its reputation is only going to get better and better over the years.
 
to shamus & anyone else who wanted to know:
i'm definitely going to duke next year. i love, love LOVE the fact that we have just 1 year of classroom and then into the clinics before the phd. i really liked the other students and the general "feel" of the campus when i saw it during second look, too, so i'm totally set.

original: a bunch of the mstps who were definitely going next year were there. they seem like a really awesome bunch. i hope you stick w/ duke 🙂 🙂

Dude that's awesome man! I'm so happy that there's gonna be another SDN MSTP'er with me at Hopkins... I was feeling kinda nostalgic.

Well, it looks like we're gonna have a ball, man! You must have been at the very top of the non-funded waitlistees.. cuz Dr. Siliciano told me that they had about 6 of the 8 already accepted on the first round... But I'm so frickin' thrilled that you're gonna be there.

So are you gonna start this summer, or are you gonna wait until the fall? You're married, right? I'm thinking of starting this summer, and I've made the revisit and had a chance to talk to some neuroscience faculty. Either way, it's really cool.

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm really excited... i wanted to scream and yell when he told me that I got the funding.

i'm definitely starting this summer. Me and my wife are going to be coming up there in a couple of weeks to set up housing.

I have not decided where I am going. I am just talking to many people and asking their opinion. I am not going to make my decision until I go to Harvard next week to revisit their MSTP. What do you guys know about Harvard's MSTP? Any comments or opinions are welcomed.

academic: I don't know anything about Harvard MSTP firsthand, but the student that I stayed with at U Mich did his undergrad at Harvard and told me that he didn't apply to that program because he was really concerned by the average graduation time. He said that he made his decision after going into the MSTP office one day and seeing the list of current students and noting that there were several 10th, 11th, and 12th year students still in the program.

Anyhow, I don't know how useful that is. I'm sure it's an excellent program.

All I can say is WOW, you guys and gals are amazing. And I remember when you had just started the application process (sheds sentimental tear). You will no doubt have bright futures and I look forward to interacting with many of you (read: future collaborations, hint, hint...) 😀

I remember exactly what you are talking about. I specifically remember my situation: I was convinced that I had no chance of getting accepted to ANY MSTP program, and that I would be lucky just to get accepted to my state school for MD.

Thanks for helping all of us future mudphuds out there, your experience and insight has been priceless.

In my opinion, this is the best thread in SDN history, since it shows the natural evolution of our attitudes and experiences about applying MD/PhD, going thru interviews, getting acceptances, and then getting off waitlists. Its not over yet, and the success that we've had as a group is pretty outstanding.
 
I agree --- this thread is awesome. It should be compiled as a pamphlet in Health Professions Offices as a guide to the admissions process for the MSTP. I think people who were like us back in June would love to read through it.

I think a great way to end it would be if we made a list of where we are all attending sometime on or around May 15th. And to really perk it up it would be cool to write some final thoughts and close this thing off for the archives...alright now I'm getting all sentimental and carried away.

I have also thought about posting some sentimental reflections on this past year, and maybe try to impart some wisdom to the next class of MSTP applicants. I think our group has set a high bar for them to follow.

It's about time to start applying to some programs! I was wondering what your colelctive opinions were on the AMCAS personal statement. Should it be geared towards a MD/PhD-type reader or should it be more general in the sense of applying to MD only? Sorry if this repeat Q's but at least it's a bump!

Hey everyone -- thanks for the compliments -- you guys are awesome --- and I that awesomeness speaks for itself.

As of now I'm about 95% sure I'll be attending Mayo next year. Aside from the remote locale I feel I jive with the research faculty, the resources, and the clinical grounding of the school. Perhaps steping outside of NYC for a change may do me some good (or at least I'll tell myself that). So it looks like I'm gonna tough it out in Rochester, MN for some time.

All you guys have definitely been awesome throughout this process. You guys made it much more bearable and much more fun. I wish we could close with a group hug and a group photo <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> *sigh*

I just got back from St Louis and I was feeling very nostalgic as I left Lambert Airport. WashU people are awesome; and dean Ross is an amazing guy. I was definitely impressed. The MD/PhD students started a clinic which is run almost exclusively by med students. I really clicked with the students and the prospective minority students were a really interesting and eclectic group. By the end of the weekend it was as though we had known each other forever. As far as research, washu is the ****. Spanking new state-of-the-art buildings all over the place. Their funding is amazing. It is THE MD/PhD factory (in a good way of course 🙂 ). Enough rambling. If I don't go there, I'll definitely miss the place. I'm even wearing a washu T-shirt right now 😀 . I'll try to go to Duke during the 1st week of May then make my choice the day I get back home. *sigh* it's crazy.
